Simple question. I was just playing Wave Race on the GameCube and thought how badly I would like to see the same level of physics based water on the Switch 2.
Would you be as interested as I am in seeing a high quality effort? Should Nintendo bring it back? Should it be super realistic or cartoony upon realistic water?
I would be intrigued by the existence of a new Wave Race but it would have to be pretty interesting for me to actually buy it. There is already a lot of racing game competition right now.
I'd be interested, but considering how I've yet to buy a Wave Race game in my life and the fact that Nintendo would rather die than release a video game below full price, probably not.
Would 100% get it. Wave Race 64 is still one of the best racing games for me. Not sure which graphics style I want. All I want is fun water physics, fun racing and those very pleasant vibes of Wave Race 64.
You mean, ignoring that of the 9 currently available Switch 2 games published by Nintendo, 1 of them is $10 and 1 of them is $20? cough
That's not a counterpoint, unless your point is "well maybe it'll be the least appealing game Nintendo could possibly make to anyone with bare minimum content, did you ever think of that?!"
@kkslider5552000 I didn't think of that. I would probably pay full price if the game was extremely beautiful and well made... But I would probably assume that 40 would be the most likely maximum price because most likely it wouldn't be the best game.
That's something wonderful about the GameCube era. They really made games dense and with quality even if it wasn't the biggest IP and even if it wasn't a big deal of a game.

I think a fairer comparison is Kirby Dream Buffet ($15) or Nintendo World Championship ($30). Those games didn't get much support, but they were still decent smaller games. I could imagine a Wave Race in that bucket.
I should make it clear that Nintendo could make money off of a solidly promoted, nice looking, feature complete Wave Race game for like 40-50 bucks. They just wouldn't do that.

So, yes, it actually is a counterpoint. You claimed, full stop, that Nintendo "would rather die than release a game below full price". When, in fact, Nintendo has done exactly that, several times, even just since the launch of the Switch 2.
Now, if what you really mean is "Nintendo prices their games more than I personally find worthwhile", than sure, that's perfectly fair. Of course, its also 100% fair that other people have a different opinion about a game's worth, and those peoples' opinions are just as valid. You might think that Kirby and the Forgotten Kingdom is too expensive for what it offers, which is an excellent reason for you not to buy it. People shouldn't buy stuff if it doesn't offer them enough value for the money. However, millions of other people have bought it. They clearly think it does provide enough value for the money. And their opinions aren't wrong just because you don't want to buy it.
As for Wave Race. . . honestly, I'm skeptical. The problem is that, ultimately, Wave Race 64 was kind of a "tech showpiece" game. Its selling point was cutting edge water physics, and beyond that its basically just a racing game. I can't see "water physics" as a selling point these days, and I'm not sure it would be possible to justify the game purely on nostalgia bait, even if it were done super low budget. Probably the best odds I could see for it working would be as part of some kind of game medley, where it would only need to be one part of several. "Switch Extreme Sports" or something like that.

Like are you like Drax the Destroyer and are literally incapable of interpreting things non-literally? Obviously I do not LITERALLY think Nintendo, the 100+ year old company, would choose to close its doors before selling a game at full price. (I have Metroid Prime: Remastered, a game I would have bought at full price but was only 40) It is a comedic exaggeration of an issue I have with Nintendo's releases where they expect people to buy the majority of their games for full priced, which I personally disagree with for what I would buy and what I feel a large portion of people would want to spend on their games, a fact that is ignored because Nintendo can get away with full prices for their big IP.
Also Kirby got its first 3D game after decades of waiting in one of the series most acclaimed games and is one of Nintendo's most reliable and consistent franchises, wtf does that have to do with a three game series (where most people forget there's a third game) that hasn't been around since the Gamecube launch and is, at best, the 4th most notable Nintendo racing series?
@metaphysician I could see water physics selling if it was very well done. People are still impressed with realism and fun. Wave Race Blue Storm was both of those things ins 2001. I don't think I have seen anyone really do it since then.
If Nintendo went out and made the most realistic water ever, people would be in.
@Jhena I'm surprised several people have singled out Wave Race 64. While that game was very good, I feel the GameCube game was better. But either way I do think they were very fun racing games that gave something different than Kart.
