@kkslider5552000 In some ways, I think exclusives is just good for like... making it a dividing point I suppose?
Like, the reason why Playstation vs Xbox vs Nintendo (maybe add vs Valve as well, even if I think Valve is more often done when comparing between PC storefront) is so strong because it's like, battle of the exclusives in a lot of ways, right? Make people more tribal feeling, attack the other side etc, because that's the way to ensure your side wins.
but PC will always be somewhat niche by comparison and Xbox is practically dead
I mean... significantly more people game on PC than console even though consoles earn a little bit more money from gaming than PCs.
One of the big 2025 studies had:
Revenue: 21% PC, 24% console, 55% mobile
Players: 26% PC, 18% console, 83% mobile
xbox is an interesting one... xbox gaming makes more money than Nintendo but in terms of actual hardware, I believe Switch 1 sold twice as much as xbox last year while Switch 2 of course sold more than PS5.

I don't trust these. Not only do individual studies rarely definitively prove anything, but too often they'll decide "well you play one mobile game 10 minutes a few times a week, that's the same as a...streamer, right?"
@FishyS How does PS manage to make the most profit? Their exclusives are known for crazy budgets and are lower in number than Nintendo's, and they sell their hardware at less of a profit margin. Do they take a bigger cut of game sales / is the PS attach rate significantly higher? PS Plus maybe?
XB I can understand as they own so many publishers/developers at this point.

Playstation shifts the most software with huge third party support and they get about 30% royalties on each sale and optical media is a lot cheaper than cartridge media too so there must be huge savings there and they have a higher percentage of digital sales too. I'm not sure about the full cost of the PS5 console but I know its significantly cheaper to manufacture than the Xbox Series X.

You can definitely argue about the methodology of counting players but the financials tend to be a matter of record in financial reports, so the fact that mobile gaming makes the most money and PC and console gaming make close to similar amounts I think is just true.
In terms of the most gamers playing mobile and the second most PC? That certainly corresponds to what I see in my day to day life so I could imagine it is true, but definitely hard to count accurately.
They're talking about over 3 billion game players so I think 'streamer' gets lost in the noise and rhe numbers are almost all casual players.
It would be interesting but likely impossible to get accurate info on total hours gaming. It wouldn't shock me if mobile still won by a landslide tbh... so many people are addicted to their mobile games.
Most of the people in the world live in poorer countries and game on low-spec PC hardware and/or phones. Steam's PC surveys reflect this, sales reflect this, the data is out there.
