I'm probably going to stop playing the game until they rebalance the NPC racers. It feels like they're far too aggressive to the point where even if you play well, you're not going to win. I can't say how many times I was pelted by a rain of shells when I got towards the finish line. I heard the game has NPCs that scale in difficulty depending on how you play, but I shouldn't have to ignore all of the mechanics of the game just to actually have a chance at winning.

Yeah, this is absolute baloney. Grand Prix AI is SOO brutal if you drift boost. While if I play like 5 year old little Timmy-no-skill, you easily win three stars for cup if I just pick a higher speed heavyweight and never drift boost, and only jump boosts. The game punishes me for drift boosting, which is the core of the game.

How did the game get released like this? What the heck is going on... 8-10 years of development. This is so broken.

Hey just wanted to ask, can you play two player local on mario kart with one OG switch controller and one switch 2 controller?

Geez, you people are ridiculous.

Loving the game so far! I still am awful, all as one of about 7 people who not only did not buy 8DX but also didn't love it when playing at friends' houses, this one does just enough different to have clicked better for me! I especially love the outfits, with Gondolier Luigi being a standout for no particular reason. Honestly, my main gripe is with the NPC characters: why is Koopa Troopa a normal, costumed character, but Dry Comes is not? Lakitu but not Goomba? And where is Dry Bones? Or more DK and Pauline fits? Not too big an issue tho for me.

@rallydefault I've been using the trail item and food bags, but it doesn't really save me when I can only carry two items at a time and I get pelted by every NPC's red shells. Every time I go into first place, I get pelted by 4-5 shells. There have been times where it felt like they wouldn't stop coming.

The strategy to hold items behind you is also reliant on if you get items that can actually block the shells. Some items won't, like coins or mushrooms- while other items like shells and bananas will. Most of the time I don't get what I need before I get pelted. I get coins or mushrooms but not shells, or I get coins and a bomb that I have to throw behind me- since using it as a shield is pointless when the game is going to cause you to get blown up.

@WoomyNNYes Exactly. Even learning how to trick, while giving a better boost, is pointless when the Ai still hits you with projectiles constantly. There's only so much the player can do to combat against the Ai outside of just playing horribly in order to get it to tone down. You're being punished for engaging with the mechanics of the game how the game is meant to be played effectively.

Just trying to help. I have 3 stars on all the GPs and Knockouts, and I’m working on the same for mirror mode right now.

It can be done.

When you trail a bomb in this game and it gets triggered, it won’t blow you up like it does in MK8.

Another good tactic to avoid red shells is to wall ride when you can. When you start seeing all the different opportunities to wall ride in places you never thought before, your options really start to open up.

It’s a fantastic game with a much higher skill ceiling than 8. It’s not as straightforward (literally).

Hey everyone just wanted to ask in free roam is there any way to track the missions or are you just supposed to drive all over hoping you bump into one? Can't figure it out but it seems there should be a way.

Admittedly the last time I played Mario kart was on the Wii U, but I think MKW is an amazing game. The tracks have so much detail and alternative routes it’s going to take me a long time before I’m bored of this. I can’t complain about the AI, but online races are brutal for me.

There is no way to track where you've found things currently other than the total number, unfortunately.

I'm at about 100 missions completed right now along with dozens of those Peach coins and ? panels, and you start to notice patterns about where/how the P Switches and Peach coins are placed. They tend to be fairly easy to see along the major roadways that connect the courses, and then within the courses themselves they become a bit more hidden (nothing crazy so far, though). The Peach coins especially love to hang out on grind rails and up high. Your eye kind of trains itself to look behind fences, little outcroppings, etc. as you find more and more.

It's just like any game. The more you play, the more you sort of start to understand the mindset of the developers when it comes to placing the collectibles.

It took me two hours to get three stars in the star cup. World will be a challenge. If it becomes too much, I will enjoy it more casually. Still a nice Mario Kart and I have not even tried Knockout Tour or the open world gameplay.

I'm enjoying my time with MKW. It looks and plays great.

But I do agree with a few QOL improvements that would be nice to have and easy to implement with an update:

1. Streamlined character select screen where the alternate outfits are held within a sub-menu that pops up after selecting a character's main portrait. It's currently just way too cluttered, even when sorting by character.

2. The option to select traditional laps rather than connected in Grand Prix. I know you can (sort of) simulate this in Versus mode, but it'd still be nice to have in GP.

3. Speaking of Versus mode, the option for connected or traditional style laps should be separate from the course select option. As far as I can tell, if you currently want to do traditional laps, you need to select each course one after the other after each race. But what if you want to do random courses that aren't connected? The way it is now, if you select random, they're going to be connected no matter what. If we had the lap type as a separate option, we could choose to do random courses that aren't connected, as in previous MK games.

4. The ability to view and select courses in a list, rather than pointing around all over the map, or toggle buttons (say, L & R) for quickly hopping between courses on the map.

Just my two cents.

A bit of an unpopular opinion, but a single lap at the actual course with interconnected courses is perfect.

I thought I wanted multiple laps for the actual course, then I did it in Versus mode, then I realized it’s boring and plays like 8 Deluxe.

The interconnected courses keep it challenging and “reactive” (can’t memorize routes as easily, so I gotta make decisions on the fly), and the single lap makes me want to race more.

Apparently there's Mario Galaxy 2 music in Mario Kart World...
Do we reckon this may hint at the game appearing on Switch 2?

With the Switch 2 mouse functionality,
would not surprise me at all.

I have to say, youtuber Shortcat has been helpful for strategies for winning online races. I didn't realize there's reasoning behind why people were picking "Random" for track selection; It's so they can focus on traditional 3 lap track races and avoid the intermission races. And I didn't realize hanging way back (almost last) and "bagging" 20 coins and mushroom items was so plausible, but after seeing how brutal the leading pack of racers can be, and the lack of mushroom items, I see how this strategy can work.

@Truegamer79 The only thing you can do is look for p switch maps online. I'm guessing IGN or reddit has been compiling them. NL appears to be making a page for each MKW region and it's p switches. Here's search results for multiple regions. I just searched "p switch mssions" and it spit out the pages for each region: https://www.nintendolife.com/search?q=p+switch+missions&s...

I'm assuming you've noticed on the MKW world map, when you highlight a character on the map, it shows if you have all their outfits or not.

Probably should fix that with an update. People shouldn't have to look up guides online. I've seen 30 year old games with better collectable tracking features.

BenAV

@WoomyNNYes Most of my time playing online has been Knockout Tour as I really don't like the normal races in this game and it's honestly pretty silly how strong bagging is. Just sitting back, getting good items and then timing it so you catch up just before the checkpoint works very consistently. And if you're lucky enough to find the shock in the top eight then you probably win.
