@WoomyNNYes ya, online there’s definitely a feeling that you’re oscillating between front running and bagging to optimize the flow of the races. I suppose knockout was intended to truncate that
Oh, that's a good point.
@BenAV Yeah, I see this shorcat youtuber racking up their VR points by just getting top 5 frequently.
I'm quite surprised how lame possessing vehicles are in MKW free roam. The semi truck is amusing and OK since it can bash through things. But the blue speedboat, literally designed like a speedboat, all it does is crawl through the water for like 30 seconds like a dying whale, it's really disappointing. Why even put it the game for free roam? It does nothing fun (unless someone can enlighten me). The UFO is.. fine. But all of us in here could make these novelty vehicles better, either with a special ability, purpose, speed, longer user period.
@rallydefault I wasn't aware that bagging was that much of a strategy with MK8. I just raced a bunch and never looked up any strategies other than time trials.
@WoomyNNYes
Yea, bagging was big in MK8 for a majority of the tracks but not all. Any tracks that have shortcuts usually make great bagging tracks. Not sure if it was a thing earlier in the franchise or not.
@Bigmanfan
Nice! I'm so close to 8,000. I think the online in this one is more unpredictable, which I love. But that means it's also a bit more stressful, so I need breaks from it lol
Do we think MKW will be the nintendo's hype game with quarterly content updates?
For the life of the switch, Nintendo always had a game or two getting new updates about every quarter that were part of creating buzz for the console (sometimes for Directs). These games were Splatoon, Smash Bros, and maybe Animal Crossing.
At the moment, we see donkey kong with only one outfit (everyone here has probably noticed). DK Bonanaza seems primed to drop DK content into MKW. I guess it could just be an outfit. Although, at some point, I assume we'll get a kart, or track, with a theme derived from a flagship game title, like DK Bonanaza, or Metroid Prime 4, etc..
@WoomyNNYes I really hope so. For me, this is my favorite Mario Kart. I love the free roam, listening to the incredible soundtrack, and going through the P Switch's. There are quite a few QOL updates I'd love to see - and this game is built for continuous updates over the next several years. I will be pretty disappointed if we don't see quarterly updates...or at the very least, a few updates a year.
I would love to see the addition of being able to race in free roam (drive to a course and opt-into a race or tours), customizable knockout tour routes (maybe this exists, haven't really explored it yet), and ultimately, being able to make custom courses/tours. This game seems like the perfect fit to allow for user creativity...like a track editor that allows for custom routes. And we need a radio .
@Lazz
Seriously, they went all out on the vibes for this one.
The music in particular is fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. I've seen some Youtube videos where the people are saying it's quite possibly the best music collectively in a Nintendo game, and although those people usually exaggerate... I may agree on this one.
@rallydefault Yeah - I thought the Smash Ultimate Soundtrack could never be topped - but this one may have it beat (will 100% beat it if we get a Hyrule Island). The remixed music is just incredible. I haven't heard a bad track yet, and really do not think that I've heard a repeat song while in free roam. Yesterday Mario 3 music started playing, and I couldn't help but smile. We have many amazing games with wonderful soundtracks, but this may end up on top.
@rallydefault Agree on the stress. It's particularly rough on rainbow road, cause that track is ridiculously long. Also agree with you and @Lazz on the soundtrack. It's so cool every time I hear a new remix of an older Mario track that I love.
The music in this game is absolutely incredible. The biggest thing that I really hope Nintendo adds is an option to turn the music up. It sounds so good when I can hear it but can be too quiet compared to the game’s other sound effects.
Still need to unlock Peepa, Swoop, and Fishbones (ugh).
Free roam is super fun from time to time. I'm in the mid 100s for the P switches. Don't know if I'll ever get them all, but it's more likely than the korok seeds back in the day haha
The more I play this game, the more I'm actually growing to love Free Roam.
I think the key is thinking of it as additional/bonus content, rather than the focus of the game (which, as always, is the Grand Prix / Multiplayer IMO, plus the Knockout Tours).
It's just so nice between races to switch to Free Roam and have a mess around - driving from place to place, exploring nooks and crannies of the tracks, etc. It takes me back to games like Twilight Princess where I'd run around Hyrule just for the hell of it, or MK64 where there was the odd thing to see off the main track (e.g. Peach's castle).
@Buizel
Yea, I agree entirely. The game is still about the races. The free roam is just awesome to have there to switch things up and go exploring every now and then.
Lots of videos on YouTube showing how detailed it is, too, right down to the behaviors of the npcs walking around and stuff.
