@bimmy-lee Well, not the ENTIRE catalog, but by now several thousands of titles. It will be fully backwards compatible with Xbox One titles, and all currently backwards original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles, which combined makes up a pretty hefty part of those thousands of titles. And from what I've heard and read so far, they're going to move forward with adding even more backwards compatible titles, once the Xbox Series X ecosystem is up and running and in enough people's homes.

There's another reason why it's never going to be 100% compatible with ALL titles, though: licensing. There's hundreds of games that feature music or imagery that was licensed, so think music games, movie-based games, and then there's also the companies that don't exist anymore and/or have been taken over by other publishers that don't like to play nice, where extending licenses is concerned.

So, depending on all of that, I suspect that at most, a 60 to 70 percent of the total combined archive could be achievable. Probably closer to the lower side of that figure. But still, what with that comprising well over four thousand titles, that should give people more than enough to play for the next generation and beyond...

There are still some questions left unanswered, and especially concerning that backwards compatibility. Is it going to be the same as on Xbox One, so emulation on a single game basis, meaning that every game comes as a package, bundled with its own, specifically tailored emulator? Or are they going for full on emulation on a hardware basis, meaning that the Xbox Series X is natively running an all-purpose emulator that can run ALL games?

That currently used method goes as follows: you insert your original Xbox or Xbox 360 disc into the Xbox One, and if it's a compatible game, then a digital version of that game can be downloaded for free, which comes bundled with its own emulator. So, basically, each bundle acts as a "Mini" original Xbox or Xbox 360 inside your Xbox One. In my opinion it's cumbersome and takes more optimization than going for the all-purpose route, but on the other hand, I do trust the tech heads at team Xbox to know their craft, so if that wasn't possible on Xbox One, then so be it.

But... The Xbox Series X is 2 times more powerful than the Xbox One X, and almost 5 times more powerful than the Xbox One S, so native emulation should DEFINITELY be possible now, especially with original Xbox titles, considering the enormous gap in power and graphics, so it should, for all intent and purposes, be a cinch to pull off on the new system.

Although some part of me suspects that it also has to do with piracy. If native emulation was/is basically already possible, then they may have chosen to not do that because otherwise we could just stick in any old disc, even a borrowed one, to install games that we don't even own, so in that regard, it could also be a specifically chosen counter-measure to prevent that.

Another small downside is that with games that you own, you need to keep the disc in the drive, as a sort of "proof of purchase" key. The only other way is to simply buy the game again in completely digital form, from the Xbox Marketplace. I've done this for a small handful of original Xbox games, because they were all below $10, and I grew tired of having to dig up old discs every time I wanted to play them.

Personally, I'd think they could have also circumvented that by doing something such as letting players register their games and/or downloading a personal key for a couple of bucks, and then tie the game to the console or profile, but maybe that's a bit too short-sighted on my part, I don't know. Either way, I do know that I'll eventually cave for the new console, but I definitely won't be buying it on launch day.

I usually stick with two main consoles at any given time as I don't feel that I have the time for more. As Nintendo traditionally always has had both a TV console and handheld, I've usually stuck with them since their platforms have most of the franchises that I like. That will now be changing with the Switch; I may grab a PS5 or Xbox Series X at some point down the line. I'm way more swayed by system exclusives and quality games vs. system power and performance.

@Heavyarms55 Both the Switch and the 3DS are my two main platforms for now. I have just over a dozen games left in my 3/DS backlog, most of which are RPGs. A few are short, but some are medium length and one (DQ VII) is definitely in the "long" category. XD I have held off on picking up any new games on the system for the time being.

I totally get what you're saying about the screens. I play my Switch docked most of the time, but I've found that I like playing quite a few of the Nindies in handheld mode. As much as I enjoy the 3D effect, at the end of the day the screen doesn't look as good. This was brought home to me more last night when I remembered how crisper the resolution of 3DS games look on the smaller screens vs. the slightly blown up XL units.

Not that I dislike my N3DS XL. But I much rather would have had the normal sized N3DS since I felt like it was a happy medium between the OG and XL systems. NoA really dropped the ball there IMO.

@bimmy-lee I still eat "trash bread" on occasion, but usually in roll form or some other shape when at a restaurant. I don't think there's a problem with it as long as healthier options are fit in as well. Then there's "healthy" vs. actual healthy food. I don't pretend I'm a perfect eater, but I do engage in a lot of label reading.

They usually do a full produce restock at around the time I plan on going this week, so hopefully I'll be able to grab everything I need. The small cucumbers and most of the tomatoes were wiped last time I went. I was able to find almost everything else I needed.

@Anti-Matter Looks like you already had your question answered, but it should work.

@NintendoByNature That reminds me of the Hugh Jass prank call to Moe on The Simpsons!

I think the danger of putting your FC in your sig here vs. putting it out on a more popular site is lower but still existent. I know who almost everyone is on my friend list - it's mostly you guys or some IRL and online friends - but I'm still trying to figure out who Great83 is. That guy has been playing A LOT of Pokemon Sword.

@ThanosReXXX I honestly seriously doubt I will be getting either XboxX or PS5 on day 1. I really feel like both Sony and MS are putting way too much emphasis on raw specs and power and not nearly enough on actual games and features. Companies can go on and on about how much raw power their machine has and it just doesn't excite or impress me. I didn't care about the bits during the bit war when I was a kid and I don't care about teraflops or ray tracing now.

What I want to see is what that power can do for games and features. And if the only real improvement these machines have over earlier models are higher resolutions and framerates - I'm just so uninterested it's not even funny.

But I am leaning toward XboxX at this point because it sounds like they are really pushing to have "as much backwards compatibility as they can" This means my old Xbox and 360 games, which I can't even play right now since my 360 died, will likely be playable on the new machine, alongside any Xbone games I skipped and new releases.

There were a lot of rumors about PS5 a ways back, suggesting full backwards compatibility, all the way to PS1. While I tried to temper my hopes that those rumors were true - it seems I failed because upon hearing that that is likely not the case, I am very disappointed. But Sony could still easily win me back if PS5 at least supports PS3 and PS4 games. I know the PS3's weird programming or something is supposed to make that harder, but right now there are still a lot of PS3 games I want to play eventually, and if I could unplug both my PS3 and PS4 and replace them with a PS5, that'd really be amazing.

@Tyranexx @NintendoByNature I like having a lot of people on my friend's list. I've got a ton of randos. I don't abuse the date change exploit in Pokemon to shiny hunt, but I shameless (perhaps hypocritically) will join open raids hoping someone else found a shiny for me. XD. And it's worked rather well. Shiny Haxorus, Doublade, Brivary, Excadrill, Cramorant and... I feel like I'm forgetting something. Also it's just nice in general, having a big list for raids.

@Heavyarms55 I'll likely do something similar when I pick up a copy of Sword/Shield. Multiple people in my local Pokemon Go Discord group have the games, so I'll likely end up adding a lot of them and participating in raids.

I kind of feel like I should pick up one of the Let's Go games and play simply for nostalgia reasons.

@ThanosReXXX - Native emulation and backwards comparability to that degree certainly adds value to it as a long term preservation piece, especially if you’ve been in with them for a while and have a library of games through the generations and upgrades. It sounds pretty cool. I didn’t mean any offense about the price, and I certainly would never begrudge someone over how they spend their money. It would be my choice of the two to pair with my Switch if I could do so, but I’m sure a Lite is way more likely in the future. Three huge Animal Crossing fans here. It ticks every weird box for me that I never knew needed ticked, and my kids love it too.

@Tyranexx - There’s few culinary pleasures I enjoy more than a big fluffy slice of white bread. It doesn’t even matter what kind. Just white bread. I’m good with every variation. And cornbread. And all the sweetbreads, desert breads, and pumpkin bread. Pumpkin bread is really the only pumpkin thing I like. Love me some bread. But, it’s probably taking time off my life. It’s a fine balance we weave between quality and quantity, always trying for just enough of both. I do take white bread breaks, but never for too long.

Glad the food situation is holding out for you. We couldn’t get cucumbers or tomatoes either. Last Sunday my wife got one wilted, dented cucumber that had to be eaten right away. Ah, we’ll see what happens. We can sacrifice our eating habits for a while for the greater good, but I already miss seeing the shelves full of produce.

@NintendoByNature - Haha, good old Hue! You should get online and Smash Hue Janus. I don’t want friends I don’t know (as much as we know each other around here), but I’d be happy to be friends with anyone from this thread. Doing okay here, hope the same for the Nature Fam, Whoooo!

@Tyranexx I don't hate Let's Go. I played and got some enjoyment out of them. But I really did not like the control scheme and I seriously doubt I would revisit the game. I use the Pokeball Plus only with Pokemon Go pretty much, or now I also connect it to Shield too because you can use it concurrently with go and Sw/Sh.

If you're looking for nostalgia, honestly, I'd wait for the pipe-dream of Nintendo adding Game Boy games to NSO and Pokemon being in that collection...

I have a very simple situation for Series X. If it plays all my XB1 games (we'll see, the recent backpedaling from "all" to "thousands" has me concerned) it'll replace my OG XB1 but if it doesn't then I'll stick with my OG XB1 and get Series X sometime after XB1 support has stopped. I only have room for 3 "home" consoles (currently Wii U, docked Switch, XB1) and I'd guess given XCDE is a 2020 title (hence XCX being further away from coming to Switch) and NSO additions being extremely slow that my Wii U will still be connected for years to come so XB1 support ending happening earlier.

Anyone else got that indie puzzle bundle game on the eshop? It’s one sale for like 5-6 dollars, and I’m quite impressed with it so far (Considering it’s four very different games)

Just wish there was a way to switch games without having to close the software.
