Still not nearly as horrifyingly ugly as Bruxish, but I'm not a big fan of the design. In terms of dragons, at least I prefer it over Goodra. The new move at least looks cool.
It's a shame most Pokemon can't speak per se, because I could see this thing using a couple of clichéd phrases:
On defeat - I'll be back. When defeating one of the Porygon line or a steel-type Pokemon - Connection....Turtonated.
Currently playing: Pokemon Scarlet - The Indigo Disk, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch)
The only thing I dislike about it, is it doesn't look real.
I know its a very contridicting subject of "its not a pokemon" but I can't help but get that vibe in similarity to the new panda. They both just look like something from somewhere else (yo-kai specifically, not even digi). Granted you can't really say what is and isn't a pokemon just because you haven't seen anything like it in the franchise, but its strange nonetheless. You just expect something a little more defining about the pokemon specifically, you can actually compare this guy to several, and I mean several other pokemon in the game currently.. it seems like something somebody would draw up re-using a favorite feature of their favorite pokemon.
It just looks way too much like chesnaught x magmar.

It looks like a N64 3D model or some ugly design from the DS Zeldas.
It's not the best design out there but it's not anywhere near as bad as you guys say (and someone with a Lelouch Ava shouldn't complain about bad designs anyway )
Buhuhu—what!?
Yes, derivative pokemon, no, actual character who's design features intricacies such as an eye-opening mechanism in his mask? Where are you, man?
I think what throws most people off is its weird stance in battle. I'd prefer if that was something it does for that attack and that it actually faced the opponent normally at every other time.
And I'm fine with the posture—that's one of it's redeeming qualities—it's the entire design I don't like. The posture is just like Mega Sceptile's, but look how the designs compare:
The sceptile design has a curve from its back continue into its tale. The leaf motif is repeated in its head and wrists, as is the red coloration of its eyes down its throat and tail.
Turtonator (I can't believe we're even having this discussion), however, is just a shell. The rocky protrusions look alright, but the shape of the shell itself is just a random eight-pointed star. The jagged, early 3D-looking polygons are repeated in its tail and ankles. Then—and this is where it really gets gnarly—they do it all over again for the head, which has no distinctive shape except for an ugly blending of the neck up into the flat shell that serves as its flat scalp. The mouth and eyes leave a totally unmemorable face, the limbs are indistinct and their color doesn't relate at all to the general McDonalds color scheme—I can't. I can't. This guy is just a complete wash visually.
@Haru17 This was the last Pokémon they made and since the new game is pretty big; there wasn't much space left, they could only fit in so many polygons
Yeah, it's definitely one of the all round unpleasant designs to my eyes. I can't say I'm a huge fan of Drampa, but I can kind of see the what it's going for, and I think it pulls that off.
This has got some neat ideas, I think, but hasn't been particularly well executed. I actually like the design of the shell itself. But I wish they'd left that as the main spikey motif and made the rest of the design a little more smooth and natural looking. I think that would have probably accentuated the jaggedness of the shell, rather than making the whole design look like a bit of a crude angular bodge. The head and face just seem quite charmless too. I like the arms though. They look fleshy and smooth and turtle-like. I think if they'd made more of the body like that, you'd have this cool contrast between the rugged, heavy, sturdy shell, and the softer, tender, almost gelatinous body and limbs. I think that contrast between hard and soft is one of the defining and interesting characteristics of real tortoises and turtles.
Apart from the arms, this Pokemon doesn't seem to have much of that. It seems jagged and forgettable rather than interesting and evocative.
@Octane I've just flicked back to the image in the previous page and you've certainly got a point. The matamata certainly doesn't have the smooth, glistening, tender skin I was talking about at all.
It's kind of wrinkly and coarse looking (though obviously much more 'flesh-like' than the shell itself). I still can't bring myself to like Turtonator's feet and tail though. They just seem so formless and crude, and remind me of the kind of features I'd stick on my own monsters in Geography class because 'edges are... edgy, and edginess is cool'. They just don't seem to look like... anything, really. Like someone's just drawn some edgy shapes where the feet and tail should be and called it a day.
Anyway, yeah, we should probably count our blessings it's not as bad as some designs, and it's not like I hate it thoroughly. I think it has some cool ideas behind it, and I actually like the shell. Maybe I'll warm to it.
