Dual Screens are awesome. I know some people think it isn't a big deal to have to enter a menu in order to access a map or inventory but I don't like it. I hate having to browse through menus

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Yup, I'd say so.

I think one is vastly under-estimating the appeal of Nintendo's software if the reason Nintendo's handhelds are more popular than Sony's is because one has one screen and one has two screens... Why doesn't the mass popularity of single-screen smartphone gaming come into this equation? Or the lack of popularity of the dual-screened Wii U? I think the conclusion is that consumers don't actually care about the number of screens. There are way more important factors.

I'm glad some of the people here weren't around when Nintendo made the single-screened Game Boy (which turned out to be rather successful) after the dual-screened Game & Watches. Probably would have said they were making a terrible mistake............

Right, and I completely agree with you on how there is a wide spectrum of opinions and examples, I was just answering the original question, that there are some gamers who love dual screen play. However I didn't say all gamers did.

I am one, I am actually a bit disappointed in how few RPGs use the touch screen, and often done so poorly you wind up using the buttons anyway. Pokemon XY did it right, perfect use of the touch screen.

I remember many criticizing and even laughing at Nintendo when they introduced the DS and it had a dual screen. Iwata said in an interview that many developers really didn't buy into it either and Nintendo had to work with them initially. Kind of crazy how quickly things and perceptions changed. The clam-shell design is one of the most appealing things about their handhelds these days.

Yup, I'd say so.

Wouldn't it be PSP/DS or 3DS/Vita?
Why pick the high and low end just to make a point?

I used to like bottom screen based games on the DS like Trauma Center but we really haven't gotten any of those so I think there's a good chance dual screens would be gone by next gen... I really hope they don't, even more than the dual screen setup I like the clamshell design and dont' want it to be replaced by a 2DS type of design

There has been very few games that make great use of the dual/touch screen that makes me say I can't go back to 1 screen but tbh I don't care, it offers more and better handeld games I like.

It's very convenient in most games to have a second screen imo, so i'd say i really like it.

It would probably feel weird to play with a single screen now lol

Nah, i think it's just the quality and quantity of the games that sell consoles rather than the dual screens.

i hated the idea of dual screens for gaming. I had no rational reason, i just hated looking at it. (this was before i got a 3ds). Now i see why it is there, but i do think that a lot of games do not put it to good use. I would like the option for all games to put all of UI on the 2nd screen, so that the main screen has nothing. That would be pretty awesome b/c UI just covers up the game and is a little immersion breaking for me.

Honestly it doesent make me want to buy a system like the Wii U or the 3DS as long as the games are great thats why i buy them. however I do enjoy dual screens on both systems (especially for the Wii Us off-screen play when you have severeal consoles and only 2 tvs in a game room!) so althou its not a selling factor in my opinion it is a decent additional feature and I do hope that Nintendos next home console and handheld will have it as well. It seems like Dual Screens are a Nintendo staple.

I like it for fighting games. Sometimes those combinations are hard to memorize/pull off. I don't want to spend hours learning them, so this works for me, tho I'm sure a lot of purists in the gaming world don't care for it.

I beg to differ.

A dual screen for the home console could be a great idea too, if implemented well by both the hardware maker and the software devs. The ultimate gamer PC setups tend to be two or three monitors even. lol

Well I was referring to video game consoles that are played on a TV, not PCs. Obviously multi-screen PC setups aren't a problem because they are right next to each other. The reason the Wii U Gamepad isn't used for more meaningful gameplay by developers is because it's silly to expect a player to maintain focus on both screens, or even seamlessly bouncing between the two, considering the variety of home gaming set-ups.

Right now, with the exception of a painfully few games, the Gamepad is basically just a glorified START screen.

100% true. It works great for a handheld when you can effectively see both screens at the same time, but not for a home console when the gamepad is in your lap and your tv is across the room on the wall. It was a flawed concept and something, I'm sure, that Nintendo R&D and software developers are kicking themselves over behind closed doors.

I don't remember who said it, but another poster here described the situation perfectly. If you want to see the gamepad and your tv at the same time, you need to hold the gamepad in outstretched arms like a Karate instructor holding a block of wood to be chopped by a student!

The only games I can think of that actually needed the dual screen setup were Metroid Hunters, Star Fox Command, and Kid Icarus: Uprising. In all of those cases, they could have done fine with a touchpad. The second screen isn't even appropriate to use for most of the HUD, as things like HP, Ammo, and Speed are things you want to know at a glance. Having that information on another screen just means you've taken your eyes off the action, and ends up being distracting. That's why so far the most common use for the second screen is to display a menu that would have otherwise been something to pause for, or to display the map or radar. With a second stick and the gyroscopes already in there, there would be absolutely no reason to have a second screen on the next Nintendo handheld, other than to emulate 3DS games.

Heck, if the next handheld is a tablet, then the one screen is probably going to be large enough to display both 3DS screens. Makes me wonder what the 3DS will be called when it's just a category in VC. Would it just be 2DS? I doubt they'd make the screen 3D again...

I have an better question for everyone. Do you rather have dual screen or an bigger vertical screen? Let's us assume both dual screen and vertical screen are touch screen.

Umm… Care to have some gravy?

I love it personally. Others might not view it as a big deal but I find it highly preferable to have map/item screens on the bottom and I love games where you're using it to make the action on the top screen happen. Plus there's just something iconic about that clamshell design to me. I do think Nintendo should move onto a new family of handhelds at the end of the 3DS's life for the sake of innovation but I'd still be sad to see the dual screen family go.

But to answer the broader question, no. The dual screen gimmick did turn heads but it's really the games that sold the systems.

I love dual screen, no clutter on the very limited HUD display, interesting controls to certain games, and it's a gimmick that doesn't affect the quality of games that don't want to use the controls. I mean look at Pokemon X/Y. that game would function fine without the touch screen, besides aesthetically looking different, and then there is games like Etrian Odyssey series, which would be a typical dungeon crawler without the map maker. I think it will stay on Nintendo handhelds in the future. Wether or not 3D becomes a typical thing with Nintendo handhelds.

Dual Screen (DS/DSi/2DS/3DS) is great. Asymmetric screens (Gamecube/Wii U) is a terrible idea.

I think gamers love games not dual screen gaming. If it really was all about dual screens the 3DS would be a must have for all and the Wii U wouldn't be in its current predicament. The dual screens are a nice convenient option (in some games) but I wouldn't say it's a feature that people "love".
