MadWorld (Wii)

PlatinumGames probably have bigger fish to fry, but we still like the idea of MadWorld's inky black-and-white presentation and bright red blood spray spruced up in HD on a Switch OLED.

What are the chances?

Let's say 30%. No, 20%. 42%.

Thing is, you can't move for stylish hack 'n' slashers these days, so while we might pine for this relative pioneer — especially on Wii at the time — perhaps it would struggle to stand out in the 2020s.

Marvel Snap

The most-played game of last year for our resident Marvel obsessive Jim Norman. He's sharp, is JN, and would like to be able to get paid to play it.

What are the chances?

Honestly, we were expecting a Marvel Snap port to drop months ago, but maybe things are going too well on PC and mobile for the devs to worry about addressing console people too.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition

Mass Effect is good. We got Mass Effect 3 on Wii U, but the console's poor sales figures made EA grumpy and we haven't had any Mass Effect since. We would like more Mass Effect.

What are the chances?

Our faith in EA hasn't been strong for years now. BUT. The Switch version of EA Sports FC 2024 has been a late-gen glimmer of positivity, and there have been some smaller EA-published games on Switch in the last few years like Lost in Random, It Takes Two, and Knockout City. We won't get our hopes up, then, but it's possible.

Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS)

We've had the original, and we've wanted Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and 3: Corruption ever since. And Pinball. And maybe some Prime: Hunters. And Federation Force gets a bad rap.

Just all the Metroids, please.

What are the chances?

Prime 2 and 3 seem like the perfect opportunity to ramp up excitement for Prime 4 next year and would make for an excellent couple of Holiday 2024 'core crowd-pleasers. The others feel significantly less likely.

Monkey Island 1 and 2 (and 3 and 4 and Tales of)

Following our Return to Monkey Island, we thought we might finally see the Special Editions of the first game and its celebrated sequel from 2009-10, which launched on PC/PS3/Xbox 360. But nada.

What are the chances?

You could argue that Disney red tape is holding things up, but that hasn't stopped various other Disney-owned games from resurfacing. Switch is a fantastic point-and-click machine, and it's nuts that we can't play this formative classic on it yet. There's a big compilation just waiting to happen.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade (Wii)

We've had 13 Sentinels and the recent Unicorn Overlord, but we'll take as much Vanillaware as we can get, because the developer hasn't let us down yet. Muramasa, Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown, and Princess Crown are all excellent candidates, but the Metroidvania Muramasa is the only one that's actually appeared on a Nintendo console (Wii).

What are the chances?

Not great, if Vanillaware president George Kamitani is to be believed. Back in 2023, Kamitani said that he wants to port the action RPG to modern consoles, but also admitted there would be problems. Boooo.

Look, we have a pitch for you: a 'Vanillaware 20th Anniversary Collection'. We know Princess Crown technically isn't a Vanillaware game, but c'mon.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)

Sure, not many look back on the 'New' Mario Bros. series as a particularly high point for the Nintendo mascot (particularly after Wonder), but we're always up for some more multiplayer platforming and New Super Mario Bros. Wii brings it in droves. The more Mario games we can get on Switch, the better.

Speaking of which, let's add the 3DS's New Super Mario Bros. 2 in there for good measure (SPOILERS! and the others — there's more to come when you get down to 'S').

What are the chances?

The fact that we already have Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe on Switch would suggest that its Wii predecessor probably isn't at the top of Nintendo's port list. The overwhelming admiration for Wonder's weirdness makes a port even less likely — at this point, it might feel like too great of a step back.

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139...

NieR:Automata made its way to Switch, so why can't its predecessor? NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... (yes, that's really the title) is a remaster of the PS3/360 NieR and makes the game much more playable for a modern audience. The story, however, is where it's at, and Replicant's narrative might just be Yoko Taro's best.

What are the chances?

We'd be more confident if the Switch had more life left in it, but at this point, it might make more sense for Square Enix to wait for the successor. Yoko Taro likes making money, so there's still a chance!

Norco

Another point-and-click for everyone's favourite point-and-click console. Norco was a 2022 indie darling set in an alternate Louisiana that we had hoped would come to Switch the following year. It didn't.

What are the chances?

Publisher Raw Fury is fairly prolific on Switch, so we're still hopeful that we'll eventually see Geography of Robots' work on Nintendo's system.

Papers, Please

Another exquisite indie. We had hoped a cheeky 10th-anniversary edition might creep out in 2023, but Mars After Midnight was occupying Lucas Pope's dev time and, having turned in the excellent Return of the Obra Dinn on Switch in 2019, he's probably not jonesing to return to his breakthrough game again when the world is his oyster.

What are the chances?

Pope once joked that Papers, Please is heading to consoles next in "2031". While we'd love to have it on Switch, it feels like if it were going to happen, it would have by now.

Still, the Portals showed up out of the blue, so we're not giving up hope.

Persona 3 Reload

But wait, we already have Persona 3 on Switch!

We hear you readers, don't worry. But Atlus only went and remade the darn thing over a year later, didn't it? Persona 3 Reload uses FES as a base and brings the game up to modern, Persona 5 standards, to darn good results. This is arguably the Persona game to start with, nowadays. But it's locked to PC and other consoles for now. Sigh.

What are the chances?

Pretty slim, at this point. Earlier this year, the game's director, Takuya Yamaguchi, said that the team decided early on that "there would be no Switch version", but the idea certainly came up. This, and the upcoming Metaphor: ReFantazio, are probable candidates for the Switch's successor though, no?
