Original Article (Wed 18th Aug, 2021 14:45 BST): During today's Pokémon Presents video, The Pokémon Company unveiled a brand new Nintendo Switch Lite system inspired by Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
Set to hit retail on 5th November, the system features artwork of Dialga and Palkia, the two Legendary Pokémon which feature on Diamond and Pearl's boxarts. It's also sporting a brand new metallic grey colour scheme not yet seen on any Nintendo Switch system, perfect for a gloomy day.
In a neat touch, the design is actually based on that of a Nintendo DS Lite system which only launched in North America and Japan. You'll spot the same images of Dialga and Palkia here:
Pre-order details are yet to be announced, but we'll be sure to share them with you as and when they appear. Do you like the design? Let us know in the comments.

A wave of nostalgia washed over me when I saw that DS Lite. Such a perfect system. #First
That looks nice. Probably won’t get it but it is nice to see a blast from the past.
Also is it just me or did Pokémon Legends Arceus and BDSP look WAAAAAAAAAAY better now than it did originally in like February
I definitely don't need it
Should've made it an Switch Lite OLED
Odd you wouldn't make it an OLED model but oh well, it'll sell regardless....
@anoyonmus Considering how Gamefreak have 2-3 year dev cycles even 6 months is a long chunk of the development. So things can change a lot in months.
Wish it was the OLED, but I guess this makes sense since considering the series has always been handheld. Still, as nice as this is, I'll pass, and stick with my SwSh special edition.
This is very boring looking.
@Dr_Lugae yeah. So what did we all learn today everyone?
Never judge a game by its looks. Things can change.
I really don't understand Nintendo's thinking. Release a OLED version, that was disappointing at best. But instead of helping its sales with a limited edition run..they use the Lite...like..what the actual
@anoyonmus indeed, never judge a game by the preview. It can actually go both ways, I've seen great game previews of games that turned out to be trash on release.
And to be honest, most early Pokémon game builds look rough. But it always gets better in the end. And this looks honestly like an awesome game.
Pre-orders open NOW ... oops, sorry you missed it.
❗I want to get back into PokéMon; I haven't played since 'Fire🔥🔴Red'.
⚠️What Game should I start with?
I have all the mainline Games CIB on GBA/DS/3DS/Switch.
I prefer my standard grey Lite with the white buttons.
@LeighDapa I feel like imo Black/White is great and the best looking in the series, however its a lot more story focused than any other entry so be aware of that if you plan to play it
You know, if this was the OLED model, I might have considered getting this. But that? That's garbage, unfortunately.
@earthinheritor Both systems are lite versions:) and pokemon was originally handheld
@Hujsson Ok, but that still doesnt really mean much. The first game was also on a dual screen system and they didnt add a second screen so the Lite just for this game haha.
Looks better than the other switch lites
@LeighDapa
I think is hard to descend in graphics so I would them in chronological order:
Platinum, HGSS, BW, BW2, XY, ORAS, SM or USUM
Platinum is the definitive version of Gen 4, maybe these remakes will change that.
HGSS are the definitive version of Johto. So many amazing QoL features added!
BW might have best Story, but by far, in my opinion, the worst pokemon designs in the entire series. The story also forces you to play exclusively with new mons. BW2 are sequels.
XY are the easiest. Intro to Fairies.
ORAS too much water, jk The only thing keeping me from saying this is the definitive version of Hoenn is the missing Battle Frontier.
SM have better story than USUM, but USUM have more content/mons. No GYMs. They are both extremely similar so pick 1 or the other, not both.
@LeighDapa It depends- if you want to revisit the series, I’d say gen 2 is amazing and still my favorite. Or you could try the gen 3 re-makes on 3ds. Can’t really go wrong!
@Dragwhite Thanks for that feedback.
@jamesthemagi Thanks for your reply.
@flummerfelt Thanks for your help.
Watch it sell out in 2.5 seconds thanks to scalper bots, then flogged on ebay and elsewhere for 5X the price.
NO special OLED. Pass
Looks nice but I think they dropped the ball by not providing an OLED special edition version.
Already have the White OLED on pre-order so that's fine this isn't OLED also. I want this for the collection though. I was able to get the Sword & Shield Special Edition Switch Lite without a pre-order so mabey I'll get lucky again with this 🤞.
@LeighDapa
You are welcome
I edited in remakes for Johto and Hoenn in my response
Wow I actually like this one, much better than the first Pokemon edition Lite and it's got a much more appealing gray than that and the standard gray as well. I probably would have bought one of these if they had introduced it sooner, but I have no need for another Switch Lite. It's a shame they took so long to release this design.
Poke-None. for me.
So. We finally get a full on Black Switch Lite but with Pokemon on it? Pass. I wish they would do an actual dark black Switch Lite. Still a nice little nod to the original Diamond/Pearl DS
Not quite as nice as the Sword/Shield Lite that had an appropriate colour scheme. I might still nab one to satiate my inner collector.
@LeighDapa Emerald.
Great reference, Nintendo!
Very dull design. They could have added highlights on the buttons at least
It's a neat thing to see more special Switch editions. But now I want a Switch OLED Legends Arceus edition
Yeah because we always admire the back of our Switches when we play. Whoever buys this is a fool.
Very nice. If I was in the market for a Lite I’d be after one of these.
I don't even care for pokemon but I want it
That's strange, My Nintendo store taking pre-orders for a Switch Lite special edition, but not for the Switch OLED model?
I’m getting it. It’s so pretty. Plus it’s a metallic black or gray. I will just give my Sw/Sh to my son.
Even Nintendo thinks the Switch OLED is lame LOL
Judging by the wear on my existing Switch, the images on the back will disappear over time. Also feel they've missed a trick by not pre-loading the game onto this console. (Unless I missed that). I wouldn't consider buying a 'lite' model anyway as I wouldn't want to lose the ability to play on a big screen.
Thanks for the article update. Pre-ordered - that's one Xmas prez sorted!
Pre-ordered as I really wished I'd bought the Sword and Shield special edition. Fortunately I love the design of both.
@anoyonmus Arceus certainly looked way better than it did the last time we saw it. Still a little blurry but the frame rate was much improved and it is looking like its a Breath of the Wild Pokemon with the Final Fantasy X battle system thrown in for good measure. I am thoroughly excited for it.
BDSP however looked worse to me. The animations were better but the game looked a bit blurry and it still had frame issues. I am still going to get it but boy do I wonder what the Pokemon Company are doing wrong to not be able to use the system properly.
@Kiz3000 since BDSP is turn based a lot, I don’t think framerate dips would affect experience mostly.
Also the Switch is like the first HD console for Pokémon. Other times it is was on Gameboy and DS and 3DS platforms
"In a neat touch, the design is actually based on that of a Nintendo DS Lite system.."
Neat touch? For real? that is actually incredibly lazy, like 80% of NOA special editions...
@__jamiie Agreed. It looks like the budget PSP Street model on steroids.
Nom d'un chien! I hoped tha this would be the OLED version!
At least I heavily like the throwback.
The original DP DS Lite was the first ever gaming system I owned (despite not actually playing a Pokemon game until a few years later) so seeing them bring back this design makes me very, very nostalgic. It also helps that the design itself is just very, very sleek and classy, so bringing it back was a smart move on that front as well. If this were a Switch OLED and not a Switch Lite, they would've gotten a sale from me.
@BLAZINOAH The Zacian and Zamazenta edition was much nicer.
Going to cross my fingers and hold out for a Legends Arceus OLED model. Hnngh.
I feel like it's pretty disappointing. How often do we see the back of a switch lite? With the DS it made sense as you saw the lid all the time.
The DS looks nicer than the switch! Not bad i suppose, but a bit boring. Also, i miss the DS days :')
