Just last month, Wargroove developer Chucklefish promised and detailed a quality of life patch for the game. At the time, it was unclear when this patch would arrive, but we're happy to report that you'll be able to see all the changes starting from today.
The team has detailed these very changes in a blog post (we have them for you down below) and notes that the update should be going live at 13.00 GMT / 14.00 CET / 05.00 PST / 08.00 EST. So, let's take a look at the changes, shall we?
Checkpoint system:
- While playing in campaign mode, you can set a checkpoint in a mission
- If you are defeated, you can retry from the checkpoint
- You can set a checkpoint whenever you want, but you can only have one active at a time (the previous gets overwritten)
Difficulty system overhaul:
- Five difficulty presets, Story, Easy, Medium, Hard (Default) and Custom
- Hard difficulty is the default, and is the standard rules of the game. It’s the only mode where you can obtain S-ranks
- Medium difficulty is a bit easier and still lets you obtain up to 3 stars
- Easy limits you at 2 stars
- Story limits you at 1 star, and is VERY easy
Multiplayer:
- You can now add CPU players to online games
- There’s now a message clarifying that you must join a match if you don’t have any in progress
- A number of fixes to Quick Play timers
- You can no longer suspend Quick Play matches and play other games in the meanwhile, since they’re supposed to be realtime
- Seven maps designed specifically for co-op have been added
- Fix issue where user’s couldn’t get into Online multiplayer
- Fix issue were main menu could not be invoked during opponent’s/AI turn
General Quality of Life
- The effectiveness chart on unit info and recruit screens has been reworked to be far more readable and informative
- Skipping battles, captures and cutscenes is now much faster
- Display the S rank requirements on the overview screen for a mission
- “Exit” has been renamed to “Suspend” to avoid confusion
- You can now see teams on the Overview screen
- Fix international text input on Switch
- Display the Controller Select Applet on Switch less often
- Add Korean font
- Resigning will now destroy all units simultaneously instead of one at a time
New options:
- Add “Movement Speed” option that allow you to set all units to move faster
- Add “Confirm End Turn” option to avoid accidental end of turn
- Add “Damage Range” option to display minimum and maximum damage on previews, instead of average damage
Fog of War:
- Allies now share vision
- Eliminated players can still see their team vision; eliminated teams become spectators
- Spectators can view the current team’s vision
- Hide enemy income and funds
- Don’t spawn effects or show building colours inside fog of war
- Don’t show battle and capture animations unless at least one of the units is visible to the current player
- Fog of War now updates faster
- Fix “sonar” bug that allowed you to obtain extra information within fog of war
- Fix allies being able to move units into each other and becoming stuck
Phew! On top of all this, there are also a number of fixes and tweaks that have been included. If you're interested, feel free to check out the full blog post here.

The S rank requirements are appreciated.
The game was already great as it was. Really nice to see them go to the extra effort of listening to the players and making the experience as polished as possible.
Excellent. This developer cares for quality.
glad this has done so well! cracking game perfect for switch playing on the go
“Confirm end turn” is a good addition as is the new difficulty settings. I really enjoy the game but got tired of not moving on due to brutal spankings from the cpu
It’s a great game but I’m please a relaxed mode has been added
Really nice to see these changes, in particular the checkpoints and revised strength weakness chart. It was really frustrating than having to re-play the first section on really hard/long maps that you'd already 'figured out' just to get back to the part where you got your ass handed to you.
I'd stopped playing, but will head back to it now
What great developers! ...Really appreciate the checkpoint save.
Lots of great improvements here. I need to pick this back up. I really like this game but am also easily distracted from it, since it lacks a story. (I mean, it has a story, but it has a story like McDonald's is a restaurant.) Game play rocks.
If this game had been a thing when I was 12 and only got a new game every 3 months, at best, it'd already have several hundred hours. As an adult my gaming time is a bit more limited and divided among other games too. lol
Is this a true strategy game, or is it a puzzle game where there's one right way to beat each map, and you have to figure it out?
Just when I thought I was out...
@Heavyarms55 There are better games out there that's for sure. I played this one as well and it didn't really got my full attention. I shut it down after a little gameplay. Even though I love tactical RPGs, but this one doesn't do it for me...but great to see patches
@Mountain_Man both
The story mode is exactly like Advance Wars would be. (Obviously not exactly)
There’s a challenge mode separate though where they give you maps specifically designed for the mode that you have to clear in one turn
S rank fix alone makes this a game changer. Checkpoints rock too!
@KIRO I feel the same way, I often go back to the game, load up the map I'm on, remember how I spent several hours...several times....losing at the end because of one small mistake. The checkpoint and difficulty settings are the cure for what ails me! Wargroove, I missed ya, boi
@Alucard83 By no means is Wargroove a bad game! I consider it to be one of the absolute best indie titles around and one of the best strategy games in general. It's just that I have an abundance of games to play these days because I can afford it, and games with a deep story and great gameplay pull me in more than games "only" with good gameplay.
Does this patch make the game up a star to now 10/10 in the estimation of @NintendoLife?
I'd like to see the Civilization VI devs patching and DLCing their game with similar enthusiasm. Come on Firaxis!
I'm a huge fan of Advance Wars style games, but this has honestly been a bit of a let down to me. The setup for each map is too similar. Giant map, you're at a huge disadvantage in resources and sometimes troops, and you have to slowly slog your way to an advantage in order to press for the enemy base.
There have been some interesting moments where I was able to snipe an enemy commander that got a little too aggressive, but otherwise it's been fairly boring.
I have just beat the game and NOW you tell me there is a NORMAL mode AND checkpoints ? -angrily frothes at the mouth-
Back in my day, we didn't have checkpoints and we were fine with it!
Sweet! Basically everything I wanted!
@Lionyone "I'd like to see the Civilization VI devs patching and DLCing their game with similar enthusiasm. Come on Firaxis!"
It's up to Aspyr, the porting company, and not Firaxis.
@JaxonH Getting harder and harder to want to buy anything day 1 anymore when I know easy mode is coming, it used to be just hard mode was added later on. And checkpoints sound nice with these huge start easy but hard to beat levels.
@rjejr
I couldn't get into Wargroove. Idk. Just made me want to play Fire Emblem. Advance Wars never got its hooks into me like FE did though.
Dont you ever like a bit of challenge? Trials Rising. This game starts off easy, anyone can do it. Then later on the tracks get HARD. Like to the point of insanity...

@Mountain_Man @Lionyone
Aspyr confirmed on reddit that both expansions, Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm, are coming to Switch. They quickly deleted all references to Switch, but it wasn't a slip of the tongue. The rep was having full out conversation about it in the comments. Kinda to be expected though, given the game exceeded expectations.
@Flammy Does checkpoint system interfere with getting stars / S ranks?
Wow! I’m impressed! Gonna hop back into this game again soon
@Mountain_Man cheers thanks I'll tweet them!
@JaxonH Awesome!!! Thanks!!!
I haven't bought this yet because Hollow Knight has consumed my life recently.
"Seven maps designed specifically for co-op have been added."
Anyone have the answer to the following related questions: Are these co-op maps playable from a single system? Do they require a second system and copy of the game? Do they require online?
Can confirm very good changes : )
I am an Advance Wars fanatic and I absolutely love Wargroove. The changes that they have made to the Advance Wars formula have made the game that much better, in my opinion. I have been playing this game pretty much daily, both campaign and online, and I am still finding new depths and enjoying every minute. I really look forward to trying out these changes, especially those having to do with fog of war.
Good stuff. Keep it coming guys.
I hope we get a Physical version soon! If not, I will get the game digitally.
@JaxonH "Dont you ever like a bit of challenge?"
I'm raising 2 teenage boys, looking at colleges for one right now. Trying to figure out how to pay for college is more than enough challenge for me, thanks. Videogames are my escape from real life challenges, it's about fun mellow relaxing stuff.
Once I'm done with Valkyria Chronicles (after playing through 4, even replaying this game on Switch was a great way to spend €10 during the sale), which should be soon, I may get this one. Unless there's news of a physical version, in which case I'll wait for that.
Nice that the updates are coming for these awesome games, Tales of Vesperia is also getting an update soon too.

Good changes, but one thing's still missing (or maybe it's possible and I'm dumb). I would love to have a button where you can see the opponents combat radius where you don't have to hold it. I know first world problems, but it's more convenient I think and Advance Wars or Fire Emblem always have it as well.
