Tetris 99 is an addictive little game, and one that has gone down incredibly well with Nintendo Switch Online subscribers since its launch around a month ago. Interest in the game saw another boost last weekend thanks to the online competitions being held, and even high profile game developers have been getting in on the action, including PlatinumGames' Hideki Kamiya.
When we say 'getting in on the action', we actually mean 'potentially becoming as obsessed as we are'. Ever since the game launched, Kamiya's Twitter timeline has been absolutely flooded with screenshots of his placements on a near-daily occurrence, starting on 16th February where he shared the results of his first match.
Like most of us, things got off to a shaky start. But he was soon climbing the leaderboards and even managed a second place finish just a couple of days later.
The first win came a couple of days later still, on 20th February. If you can't work it out for yourself, his status essentially equates to "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" - something we can all relate to.
And from that date, he hasn't looked back (and he still gets just as excited over his victory royales now as he did a month ago). His most recent victory was shared just a few hours ago in a screenshot he saved specifically from the night before.
We're almost ashamed to say that the majority of the Nintendo Life team members haven't been able to claim a victory yet, but we're having a blast with the game anyway. If you're reading, Kamiya-san, feel free to send any tips our way!
Have you been enjoying your time with the game? Let us know how you've been getting on in the comments.

I would congratulate him... but fear he might block me.
Nice! Took me 121 games to get my first win. Got win #2 16 games after that and now I'm just on my way!
@Shiryu I see what you did there.
if he get's first place will he show us a trailer of Bayonetta 3?
jokingwise, im happy to see him play Tetris.
@KingBowser86
This game is taking over the Switch world, I'm not surprised it's getting this much attention.
I won the first game I ever played, though I played an absurd amount of Puyo Puyo Tetris. Since then, I regularly place top 5ish, but I've only won 2-3 more times, which is quite disappointing after winning the first one.
I actually claimed my first victory in this game today. I didn't think I would enjoy it this much when I first got it, but I've been having a lot of fun with it lately.
@roadrunner343 I feel you man. Top ten doesn't seem to be a problem for me either, but i feel like there's some strat regarding top 10 play that i'm lacking / not seeing that would help my chances of winning more frequently.
@Folkloner Yup, I don't play the game much at all (I prefer 1v1), but there's definitely something missing from my late game strategy. It also doesn't help that you're matched with 98 other players. Even if you are a pretty good player (I think I was 25th in my region on Puyo Puyo Tetris) you get matched up with people of equal skill level. With 98 other players, there's almost certainly bound to be someone who can smash you. You also get those unlucky rounds where it seems everyone just targets you from the beginning and you place in ~50th XD
I wonder how many wins Hideki has so far? And what his win/loss ratio looks like?
I just want the ability to play solo marathon Tetris on my Switch. Not a big fan of throwing away my time on this random luck fest.
The best I've managed is 16th, but I haven't been playing for as long as others have.
@Shiryu I miss your reviews man
@Mallow
Then get Puyo Puyo Tetris. There's a demo you can download too.
It's great for a quick pick up 20 level solo marathon.
@RupeeClock
I didn't realize this game included a solo Tetris marathon option! I will have to check it out.
I don't blame him, Tetris 99 is addicting
@Mallow
Yup, it's immediately accessible from the title screen, you hop straight into gameplay. Same for Puyo Puyo.
Honestly the game has a wealth of content and modes, it's great.
@Shiryu
Did you record footage of one of my games there in that GIF?
My record is 7th (coincidentally, 7th is also the best I've ever done in an in-person video game tournament)
Bayo3 is officially delayed.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Either one would work though wouldn't it?
Give me analogue controls, and I will hit that number 1 spot. The D-pad controls are terrible.
When I saw how that one Japanese character repeated many times, the only thing I could think was him going "AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!", and then the article confirmed me right, lmao! This game really get's peoples' passions up
Sadly, the best I've done so far is 8th and 11th, and that's not playing everyday so... 1st place one day I guess. Good for him to get it.
My best is 6th. It gets crazy fast once you enter the top 10. I doubt I'll ever win a game.
I got one victory during the event. My main Tetris experience was with the Gameboy in my formative years. I am good at setting up and executing multiple tetrises however I have learned that a t-spin is a more effective way to send blocks. My old brain is having a hard time learning the technique during a match and then I just revert back to me old ways.
I'm on 9 wins out of 565 games. Yep 565 I'm hooked. I've come 2nd so many times, I'd guess at least 30 times. I wish it told you that stat actually. A record of top 5 finishes and your average finishing place would be good to know
@Shiryu A+ Gif
@Mykillvee I find the the Joy-con in the grip to be the perfect Tetris controller,the 4 buttons work great. The D-pad on the Pro is useless.
@SuperCharlie78 Ah, good times! The current NL review staff is nowadays more than able to handle thigns without me and retro gaming news simply don't make the numbers. As such I just hide in the shadows and discover neat news-worthy items (like this one!) and make awesome thumbnails.
My second game I came in third.
I’ve come in third a couple of times since then, but that’s as good as I get.
Took about 25 games for my first win, then another 300 for my second during the tournament, and my third and final win 5 games later. I feel like the last week has seen a dramatic shift in player quality as it seems to be much harder now.
I wouldn't have known. He blocked me a good while ago lol
Actually, the tweet of his first win says "YOSSHIYA-AAAAAAAA(...)", which is basically an informal "ALRIGHT" or "AW YESSS" when something goes your way. It's not an "AAAAAHHH" scream. Super trivial stuff, but I'm not sure why you'd write that in the article if you can't read the tweet either.
Anyway, it's cool he's having fun with the game. I like how universally liked Tetris is and how the 99 take resonates with just about everybody.
I’ve finished tenth twice but that’s as good as it gets for me! The game is so addictive! One more go...
Who doesn't like a bit of Tetris?
Tetris really is the PERFECT game for Kamiya. I mean, it might as well be named "Blocks: The Game".
The highest I've gotten was 10, I was caught off guard by the increased speed.
