Just in case you'd forgotten, today sees the release of Out Run on Nintendo Switch, the latest game to enter the SEGA Ages range on Nintendo's machine.
Featuring new motion controls and a new ranking system, you can now speed through the streets of Out Run on your trusty Switch, experiencing the award-winning game and fan-favourite for yourself. A launch trailer has been shared to celebrate the game's release, alongside a list of facts and trivia in a new press release.
Did you know all of these?
- Out Run was first conceived as a racing game called DEAD HEAT, where you drove a Formula One race car, before it became a driving simulator with a commercial car to help set it apart.
- Out Run was also modeled after the American cross-country road race seen in the film The Cannonball Run before planners Yoji Ishii and Yu Suzuki switched gears to Europe due to the wider variety of landscapes.
- This SEGA AGES release contains tracks added for the 3DS version of Out Run along with all-new arranged versions of songs from the Genesis and Master System releases, such as MIDNIGHT HIGHWAY -PLAYBACK-, and even includes a chiptune version of RADIATION from Out Run 2006: Coast 2 Coast.
- If you enter a high score as the name "YU." with the period and hold down the X button at the end of Stage 2, you will see a credit for legendary designer Yu Suzuki appear on screen!
If you haven't picked up your copy yet, you can snag it from the eShop for $7.99 / €6.99 / £5.99. All other game releases today can be found in our Nintendo Download articles: Europe / North America.

it's gonna be really hard to top the 3DS version. that release was so definitive.
SOLD!
(Ya darn tootin' that's all I can say ya stinking website!)
@CharlieSmile Same here. if I didn't have it already on 3DS, this would be a day one for me. But for now I can't justify double dipping, one version of this is enough.
@nab1 I'll probably double dip when there's a sale. I do really love Outrun.
Only if it's Physical....
The best £6.99 you’ll ever spend. I was lucky enough to be around when this was first released and it holds a special place in my heart......the simplistic gameplay and awesome music creating an almost hypnotic vibe. Essential
Been hammering this all day !
Best £5.99 ever.
@SwitchForce You will have to hunt for the Mega Drive copy then.
Outrun aka the beautiful journey 👍
Bought it the very minute the eShop updated. Although I discovered a graphical glitch on the ‘old’ version in the game over score screen. Hopefully they can fix that up and update
Debating if I wanted to double-dip on this, but I think I will buy it now. Being able to play it on a TV, along with the larger Switch screen itself, sounds very appealing to me, though I’ll miss having 3D turned on. I thought about waiting for a sale, but I’d like to think the extra $2 I spend now will encourge Sega to keep commissioning M2 to put out definitive ports.
is this the arcade version or some genesis port?
i forget what ages is. isn't that their arcade porting group?
Playing it now, the resolution and screen size really does make a difference in Hand Held mode over the 3DS, not played on TV yet.
I recommend double dipping at £5.99
Edit: just played on TV with Scanlines, No Smoothing, looks fantastic
@sword_9mm Arcade with additional extra’s
Power drift next please Sega with a championship mode like the Sega Saturn version not sure if the 3ds version has this
Well I'll be, The Canonball Run. Now I want to hear Eastbound & Down while I play this game next time
I AM VERY HAPPY
I think I'm getting this. Outrun has a very special place in my heart from when I first ever played it. I just need to point a fan towards me while I play it to get that breeze for added ambience.
No wonder I loved this game as a kid . . . Cannonball Run was a favorite of mine.
Interesting trivia! May explain why (1) my favorite OutRun clone, Built To Win has that awkward Formula 1 car phase after you think you completed the game, and (2) Rad Racer let you toggle between a Ferrari and an F1 car.
Will be buying for sure I have outrun on so many formats. Absolutely love the game, I’m 47 and had the pleasure of playing this masterpiece in all its glory back in the golden age of the arcades. Pure gaming heaven!!!!! ❤️ Outrun forever 👍🏻
It shall be mine.
@MeloMan love those films, Hooper also another favourite
I spent far too much time playing OutRun in Yakuza 0 because it's so addictive. It's a brilliant way to pass time.
Fun tip: if you go into the options and change the version to OLD, you can hold X just as the road splits (on any stage) and see the special message without having to beat the game first.
Erm, playing it with the Deluxe cabinet background, and vintage setting is just spot on! Only thing missing is the smell of cigs!
@GrailUK At first I was like "why would I buy these Sega AGES releases when I can just buy the Genesis collection," but they have really put a lot of care and attention into these games and they truly standout from the classic Genesis versions.
I can't wait to shower in some magical sound
Can anyone explain this to me; why does handheld mode have a larger arcade cabinet wallpaper than in docked? It doesn’t make any sense.
Releasing OutRun 2 would have been preferable, but, you know, OutRun is also good
@JayJ You are so right!
I’m in like Flynn!! 😃 more Sega please!!
2019 starts here 🥳
The making of the 3DS version: https://web.archive.org/web/20170630094431/http://blogs.sega.com/2015/01/23/sega-3d-classics-developer-interviews/
Got it and i can almost feel the sun on my face and the wind in my hair, what an amazing job M2 have done here, especially the new 60fps version. Now it’s time to crank up a bit of Splash Wave! 🌊🏝 ☀️ 🚗
Only love for Outrun here ❤️
Tremendous conversio , M2 deserve support for their hard work so this is be probably my 4th time buying this now maybe 5th
I want this. Not because I'm a huge Outrun fan but because I have fond memories playing as a kid in bars while my dad was drinking. Gotta love the 80's!
I've been waiting for this classic! Outrun was always a sometimes treat for me back in the arcade days because it was always a sit-down machine and rather lavish for my precious quarters.
Time finally to avenge 13 year old me!
But now Im thinking a Cannonball Run simulation game would be hella fun.
They should have released Outrun 2019 with it. Since its now 2019 lol
@JayJ The Genesis Collection does not have Outrun or Phantasy Star 1
@Emperor-Palpsy My guess is the dimensions of the Switch’s screen are longer in width than that of an HD television. Just a guess though
