It appears that the Nintendo Switch is getting its first dose of Digimon-shaped goodness, with a brand new game from Bandai Namco called Digimon Survive expected to launch sometime next year in Japan.
The game has reportedly been announced in this week's Famitsu magazine, with details now being circulated among Japanese press. Blog site ryokutya has shared some key information from the announcement, noting that the game is a survival RPG that contains a mix of elements from other genres, as well as a blend of 2D and 3D graphics.
Conversations will feature 2D images, and choices will be able to change story elements or even evolutions. There appears to be point-and-click style field investigations, battles will be strategy-like with square grids, and the protagonist is an eighth-grade student who has Agumon as his partner. Phew!
A Digimon event had previously been announced for the 29th July that was set to feature a game announcement, with all of the action scheduled to be live-streamed on YouTube. It seems likely that Digimon Survive is that game, and we'll hopefully hear more about it at this event, perhaps with a clearer understanding of how the game will look and play.
The last three Digimon titles were exclusive to PS4 and PS Vita, so seeing this latest title arrive on Switch is very welcome indeed. Are you up for a new Digimon game on your Switch?

all these announcements and there is not even a nintendo direct.
talking about directs....
the june 22nd is obviously fake, but i think we might get an announcement in that week for a direct
edit: seems like japanese third party's are finally going at the switch full on.
Hopefully this one won't be as grindy as some of the previous Digimon RPG games. The whole "survival RPG that contains a mix of elements from other genres" seems a little odd, but it's certainly preferable to staying basically the same for 20 years like certain other monster collecting series.
Cautiously optimistic.
World was trash. It was just a glorified mobile-clicker that had a AAA price tag on console.
The Cyber Sleuth games were fantastic though.
If this turns out good I’ll probably double dip for PS4 & Switch.
Which is better Pokemon Go Pikachu or Digimon Survive ? Digimon might be knock off Pokemon ? why so conflict Digimon and Pokemon ?
From 3 Monster Game franchises (Add Yokai Watch if necessity), i really Fond with Monster Rancher & Pokemon. A little bit interested with Yokai Watch series but Not really interested with Digimon series.
I remember, back in the day, when Digimon was the competitor of tamagotchi. But Digimon could attack each other by connecting them up at the top of the controller.
Never got in to any of the monster the video games though
If both Pokemon Go Pikachu or Digimon Survive. Let's Figure out of make it easy or hard.
Pokemon is way better
Probably a Day 1 from me. Let's see how it is from the trailers first though.
I've been wanting to give Cyber Sleuth a try for years now. I hope this is a step toward that.
Would definitely be interested ,but I hope someone can help me. As I have bin having an discuss about if digimon was a videogame or anime first
Cyber Sleuth was a great game. Hoping this one gets localized.
We already have Pokemon coming. Shouldn't one of their higher priorities be trying to get a fighting game like Soul Calibur or Tekken on the Switch?
@Drache_Kaiser Huh, yeah never thought of that
If it looks good, I might get it.
I wanted to like Cyber Sleuth, but couldn't get into it.
With that said, this is nothing but good news. I might give the series another chance.
Yes! Digimon was always better than Pokémon.
@Tsurii
I hope it's a good story with gameplay to match. I always preferred the lore from Digimon as opposed to the weak story from Pokémon.
Yes, please. The Vita ones are awesome.
@angelus
You do know that Nintendo make neither of those, nor this? You do realise Nintendo cannot force Devs and publishers? Plus... Tekken is a pile of rubbish and Soul Blade is stuck in the early 2000s with questionable character design. It was okay 18 years ago... But now.
But way to show ignorance. Pokémon is for the likes of you: idiots that know no better.
But why get Tekken and Soul Blade when Smash and Street Fighter are on the Switch... Shouldn't their priority be in supporting those games?
All we need now is a special remaster of Final Fantasy 7 and 9 for the switch and then it will be my primary game machine along with PC... If only it could handle Quake Champions...
Shin Megami Tensei: Digimon Survivor.
@angelus The switch is already flooded with fighting games though. Between all the new geo titles, Smash Bros, DBZ, Street Fighter, Brawlout, Rivals of Aether, Pocket Smash, SNK 40th, Blade Strangers, BlazBlue, Fantasy Strike, Guilty Gear, ARMs, Battle of Gods, My Hero and SNK Heroines the system is fine for fighters.
Survival on the other hand is basically what, just pair of Indies? This is a much better genre choice.
Can we just have Dragon Warrior Monsters instead please?
Hell yeah! I've been waiting too long for a Digimon game, loved it on the DS!
Hoping it'll be good - and I still want to see Agumon in Smash, however unlikely that will be
We are finally getting a Digimon game on the Switch! My day has been made!
Although, I am somewhat cautious about this game. The Cyber Sleuth games are amazing, but World was garbage, so I'll have to see what direction this game takes.
Sill, its Digimon on Switch! Can't help but feel some excitement.
I loved both Cyber Sleuth games and World: Next Order. They are very different types of games though. I'm genuinely interested in what in the world they could do for the next game. Fingers crossed that its not like Metal Gear Survive.
Will definitely get. Love Digimon.
play the theme song!
I'm cautiously optimistic. I loved both Digimon World DS and Digimon World: Dusk on the DS, and I still really would like Re:Digitize Decode to come out of Japan....I've about lost hope at this point though.
@superguy123 According to Leaky Pandy, a Nintendo Direct is coming between the 9-15 of August.
@R4z0rGr1nd3r Why are we talking about Nintendo when this is clearly about Bandai Namco...?
Anyway, my point is, I feel there is a lack of traditional 3D fighters on the Switch. ARMS, Pokken Tournament, Smash are all great games but there is still something missing there. I have a feeling we'll see a 3D Mortal Kombat or Injustice on the Switch before any Bandai Namco ones.
@link3710 Yep, I'm looking forward to DBZ Fighter Z from all the hype I've heard. I should have specified in my comment that I was referring to 3D fighters. My bad, it was early.
This is awesome! I'm getting this!
YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!
I love Digimon. Cyber Sleuth and Kingdom Hearts 3 are the only reasons I want a PS4.
This is what I want, Loads and Loads of anime based games on the Switch! Keep them coming!
Funny - I just got Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker's Memory for $25 during Prime Day 🙂
This is a bit different I guess... Hopefully it makes more sense later on.
Digimond has been on tons of platforms... Digimon World: Digitize Decode was on 3DS
@R4z0rGr1nd3r but which digimon game? Most of them have been terrible.
@Arnold-Kage See Bunkerneath's first post for the answer. The anime is based on the 1997 virtual pet.
Cybersleuth is literally the only game I've ever actually up and sold. I have no faith that Bandai Namco can make a good Digimon game. It's a shame because I love the cartoon, but the games have always been nothing but disappointing to me.
@Gauchorino
Thanks. Still it would mean I lost^^
@Arnold-Kage Technically it was neither. Digimon was a spin-off of sorts of Tomogatchi products. As Tomogatchi was popular with girls, they wanted to market something for boys, so Digital Monsters Virtual Pets were born. Instead of tiny cute creatures to take care of, you now have dinosaur-like creatures to fight each other with. The origin is much different from Pokemon's, so comparing the two beyond the anime's success is beyond me. Their names sound familiar, I guess?
Bandai Namco. 90% garbage games 10% Dragonball FighterZ quality games. People buy their games because it has the name of their favorite/ a popular anime but get disappointed 90% of time. Lets see if Digimon is good.
@NEO_Ness
That still does not change the outcome. Thought digimon was an anime first ,game second which according to the rules of the argument me and my friend had would make the chance an digimon joined smash at 0%
@geheimxy
Think you forget soul caliber,tekken,tales of ,dark souls and other ips they have
@Arnold-Kage "Digimon World" came out in Japan January 1999, and "Digimon Adventure" (Season 1 of anime) aired in Japan March 1999. So to answer your overall question, it was a game first. But it's not a likely franchise to be brought to Smash IMHO.
As long as it isn't as bad as the grind fest that digimon links was on mobile.
@Arnold-Kage My pleasure, friend. And I'm not sure if you lost that discussion, as virtual pet toys (like Tamagotchi, Nano Pets/Fighters, and Digimon) could probably be considered as games, too. But maybe you mean "videogames played on a console" or something similar, in which case, yes, 1999 PS1 game Digimon World was based on the "virtual pet gameplay" combined with the more developed themes of the anime.
@Gauchorino
For the discussion we agreed on games and accessories since r.o.b is an character
@NEO_Ness
Not sure myself ,but weirder things have happen.
@Spectra ...What's wrong with Cyber Sleuth's Story?
@Arnold-Kage (sry 4 late response) i was talking about their anime games tho, not "Originals" . Bandai namco is a very Talented company with great games, but so many of their anime games feel rushed and don't have any love in them. It's like they just want to make a quick buck with people who buy the games because they have Anime X in the title. I feel like more than half of their anime game adaptations are under 7/10. Depending on the team they use the game is great or bad, and anime games often get the worse Teams. That is only how i feel tho, you might feel different.
@geheimxy
To be fair name a few anime,cartoon, comic based games that are good that not based on the fighting genre.
Another thing to remember that most of these franchise only last two or three years. Once they get beyond that , and can't be considered a hype anymore they get better.
Check the first naruto or dbz games out. Their quality does not compare. A
