Without any sort of trophy or achievement system in place, Nintendo Switch owners only have one metric (apart from their pride, that is) to measure their dedication to a certain game: the play time activity tracker. However, a recent bug that's reset the timer for launch games such as The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild has caused many a heart to break. But worry not, Nintendo is on the case and it's assuring users that all activity is still being recorded and that a future update will restore any time stamps lost thus far:
In a recent tweet, here's what Nintendo of America had to say:
So a fix is coming, and more importantly, all that time spent grinding for the Master Cycle Zero in Breath Of The Wild wasn't for nothing. The arbitrary numbers will live on!
Has your play activity timers been reset? Are you still playing Breath Of The Wild? So many questions, so little time...

Where's the Ocarina of Time when you need it?
Nice.
The main thing that worries me in relation to the number of hours played is how much progress I stand to lose if something happens to my Switch, due to the inability to backup saves. I hope that Nintendo are working on this too.
Great.
A user from reddit says that your log is deleted if you do not play a game in 6 months. So... This is what we should be talking about.
Trophy for some, guilt for others.
I'd rather not know how much time I wasted on video games.
Good because I was expecting to tick over the 200 hours on Zelda this weekend but instead it read 0!
@ASTURmatr and you believe what people put on reddit?
That's the best thumbnail I've seen in almost a week XD
Makes you wonder why not show the time accurately right away if the system is there and it works?
@Bunkerneath I have not played BotW for months, so... It will not take so long to check.
I shouldn't care so much about how many hours I've put into games but I do.
I really, really do.
Some sort of achievement system is long overdue. I liked the miiverse stamps and it would be great if something similar could be implented with the switch.
I hate it when a new product has a worse feature than the previous products, it really boggles my mind. The 3ds and the wii U had awesome activity trackers. Not only is did they not update the freakin activity tracker for the switch in a year, it actually got worse. How does a multibillion dollar international corporation manage to screw up such a thing?
@SonOfVon Exactly! :/
I love my Switch but... come on! the activity log is just one of those things that worked flawlesly on 3DS or WiiU. In one year we've had no significant improvements on the Switch OS.
If it is there I will like it, if not no big deal.
Thank you, early adopters.
I got my Switch in December, so I haven't encountered this problem yet. Now that Nintendo is aware of it, I likely never will. But, to second someone else's sentiment, there are plenty of things I'd rather the Nintendo people be working on than my playtimes.
Will the updated play time tracker only display the total hours played, or will it allow me to keep track of my daily play hours of each game, like the Activity Log in Nintendo 3DS does?
@ASTURmatr That's where my 1-2-Switch 'Less than 1 hour' went. I'm sure I haven't played that for over 8 months. :/
yer activity is being recorded in more forms than one.
nintendo is part of the illuminati and they are using this device to record yer habits and peer into yer homes and watch you. they are recording yer activities for dark reasons. we must shut down nintendo. its a sign of the times. they are being payed off by the government in helping brainwash the world.
I'm fine with this, especially considering if they're tinkering with play activity we could get a full on Activity Log like the 3DS that counts the exact time you've been playing and not in set intervals of 1-5 hours.
@ASTURmatr Can confirm this is not true. Snake Pass still says "Played for a little while" despite my not having touched it in almost a year. Don't believe everything you hear on reddit. HOWEVER - it can only store up to 20 games on your profile and it probably deletes the longest ago first? That's just a theory, a G-- /yanked offstage/
@ASTURmatr Game activity after 6 months dormant being deleted?!!! I seriously hope that proves untrue.
Idk about you, but all I know is that ever since I got my Nintendo Switch, time has been a blur.
I am glad they are aware and gonna fix it. But I still would really like a proper activity log. I have more titles than show up on the profile and don't want to sit there swapping out game cards just to see what my play times are...
We had a decent log on Wii U and the 3DS one is in my mind, perfect. I don't care about the lack of trophies or achievements or pride, I just really like knowing how long I have played my games.
I screenshotted my Y2K glitch of BOTW’s playtime. Savoring this memory.
Glad this only effects launch and other early games. My 250 hours in Xenoblade Chronciles 2 are safe.
