Tozai Games is bringing Lode Runner Legacy to Switch in Japan, it has been revealed.
An update of the classic Brøderbund title from '80s, Lode Runner Legacy launched on PC last year and comes with a whole host of modes, including a level editor and character editor. You can even choose to experience the game from a first-person perspective.
It will cost 1,112 Yen when it launches on the Japanese Switch eShop this Spring. There's no word on a western release as yet, but the fact that the game is already available here via Steam bodes well.

The only Lode Runner I ever played was Hyper Lode Runner on Game Boy.
Solid timeless gameplay mechanics.
This looks like it's going for the look from the original Apple II version, but with quasi-voxels and glossy lights. The whole thing does come off as a little kitsch, but as a series, Lode Runner has looked wildly different with each entry and revival, so if this finds a player base, all the power to it.
If they’re making Brøderbund software for switch, where in the world (or time or space) is a Carmen sandiego port?
Day 1!
Ha. I was just wish Ng for some speccy stuff and voila! It was a solid wee title back back back in the day. I’ll wqit for a review but this could be a pleasant pick up and play distraction.
Played long long time ago, on ms-dos 3.20 with my Olivetti Prodest PC1, 2 floppy drives, no hard disk nor mouse, 16 colours CGA graphic if I remember well... Can't wait to play it on the Switch, I always loved that game...
Truly impressive game back when it released on 8-bit computers. Apple ][e was how I played it most. The level editor was such a cool addition to have back then. Great action puzzler platformer and it's fascinating to see its longevity and multitudes of releases in Japan (I see it was one of the first third party games to release for the NES in Japan, that must be part of the reason).
On this version, the frame rate is hurting my brain a bit. Will be curious about this one when it comes.
@Erchitu - must've been EGA, which was 16 colors. Although that PC sounds old even for EGA haha
CGA was 4 colors.
@Pod
That was one of my very first games. So hard ! So great !
The level editor feature, though, was not thought through : there was no battery save so if you could spend an hour or so designing a very clever level, it was only for the sake of it.
Played quite a bit of LR: The Legend Returns on a friend's PC in like 2000. I recall drawing out a sick level on a church bulletin and handing it to him to recreate, and it translated perfectly.
Never had a PC or current-gen consoles growing up, so other kids' parents had to provide.
@Prizm Yeah, the games was 4 colours indeed, if I remember well CGA was 16 colours palette, but limited to 4 colours at the same time 😂 Not sure about this, but the games was absolutely 4 colours as you say. I remember 4 colours version of the first Test Drive... Crazy times 😁
SOLD, though I hope it comes to the US eshop cuz I have yet to create additional accounts
I have tried several titles in the past and just cannot seem to get into Lode Runner games... I love the new updated look with this one though and am happy to try again.
Love them Japanized western cult classics like this one and Spelunker.
@Tibob
I played around with level editors for other puzzle games on the GameBoy that had the same limitation. Pretty stupid, but it did get me excited about one day making my own games.
@Pod I know that feeling.
Me and my friend played LR: legends return to the death back in 2000. We have created a custom scenario that has almost 100 levels.
Skip forward to 2015, my friend successfully code a lode runner clone game for his final assignment while I helped him with the graphical part.
@Dawn-Shade
Good on you guys! I hope you still do stuff together.
Looks pretty cool.
