Hamster is taking a break from fighting games next week to bring to the Switch a game of volleyball. If you have worn out the ARMS volleyball mini-game, Video System's (of Aero Fighters fame) 1994 Power Spikes II might just be up your court.
This sequel brings several features from the Super Nintendo Hyper V-Ball game to the Neo Geo system, with the biggest addition being the futuristic Hyper League joining with the more traditional male and female competitions.
Instead of traditional points, in Hyper League you must use your special shots to take energy out of the opponent's team before they do the same to you. Consider Power Spikes II the 2020 Super Baseball or Soccer Brawl equivalent for volleyball games.
All these futuristic sports games just remind us how insanely good Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe still is. If you are looking for more traditional alternative and are taking a cue from Alex's latest GameCube video, Sega's Beach Spikers remains a solid option.
Any volleyball fans out there in the comments section? What are your favourite volley video games of all time? Will you pick Power Spikes II on January 18th? Jump serve your comments below.

"Any volleyball fans out there in the comments section?"
Women's beach volleyball is usually an enjoyable pastime.
You mean Speedball 2? Not Speddball, right?
Loved that game, played it to death on my Acorn 4000 back in the day
@JHDK i watch women's volleyball. not necessarily the beach variation tho'.
@Bunkerneath Speedball? That's something I'll only mess around with at a Phish concert.
If I had to pick a word that best described this release, it would be, random.
@Bunkerneath How the heck did I let that one fly? Thanks.
Been a volleyball player my whole life so I have to check this out. Beach Spikers for the Gamecube is, and probably always will be the best volleyball game.
Speedball 2-Brutal Deluxe aka the best sports game ever released. Although I must admit Rocket League is a worthy challenger
A strange looking game this one but not in a good way. According to one reviewer
"Wow, I never imagined a Neo Geo game could be as monumentally bad as this is! Power Spikes II is practically an insult to this system.
Lacking even the most basic playability, this is easily one of the worst Neo Geo titles ever conceived"
Am I right in saying there is no Neo Geo release this week? There's not one on the Eshop anyway. If so, I think this will be the first week without a new Neo Geo title since they started releasing them. Maybe Double Dragon will finally arrive then?
Beach Spikers or bust. This game is crap.
@Oorwullie Indeed, couldn't agree more. There are far superior ball games to be found on the Neo Geo than this.
I never liked this game, one of the worst Neo Geo games out there. Beach Spikers for the GameCube was fantastic, would love to play the again.
Can I just have a larger court and 4v4 volleyball in arms?
I think it would be fun.
@OorWullie Nope, IIRC your favourite game Art of Fighting 2 is due for release this week and confirmed.
Wake me up when Samurai Spirits 2 is released in 2 weeks. I'd rather play the original Fatal Fury for 24 hours than play Power Spikes II.
Hmm, looks a bit dull if I'm honest.
@YamAsereht My favourite game that I've never actually played nor have any desire to.
I didn't know we had dates for the other confirmed titles. Looking forward to SS2 and Super Baseball 2020.Interestingly I just searched for Samurai Shodown 2 Switch on Google and the top 3 answers feature my own comments on the game in the text under the link.
@OorWullie Haha yeah AoF 2 is actually another ACA release I will be happy to skip on Switch myself.
Those dates aren't actually 100% confirmed, although Hamster always announce their ACA batch announcements with an precise release order without fail.
(waits patiently for FF3/RB:FFS)
Hated this game. Good for those that didn't though. Gimme 2020 on my Switch and I'll be happy.
I have all the volleyball I already need or want in Super Mario Odyssey. Think I'll pass on this one. Or spike it.
Dang it. I love futuristic sports games. Never ever ever ever played a 2D volleyball game...and now I think I will.
I played the crap out "Super Spike V'Ball" on NES as kid. I think it actually came as a pack-in game with our NES system that included an NES "Four Tap" (4 player control expansion)... I had three younger siblings (and of course the neighborhood kids) so the competition got pretty fierce. I have to say, Super Spike looks way the heck better than this game, despite being older... at least you could move all around the court in pseudo 3d/isometric view.
Extreme volleyball in space! Definitely different.
Baseball.Stars.Professional.Please.
yes speedball 2 was awesome...
Yeah, Nintendo just needs to give Neo-Geo it's own Tab on the eshop at this point. When are we going to start calling the Switch the Neo-Swicheo?
Where's Windjammers?
