We're used to the odd bout of rumours trickling through Nintendo Life Towers, but over the past few weeks things have been kicked into overdrive. Nintendo Directs, firmware updates, all of this is culminating in a firestorm on social media.
So to continue riding the wave of all the happenings we've decided to take a look at what might actually be possible for a user interface update for the hybrid console. Make sure you check out the video above where we analyse piece by piece what we might come to expect from the big N.

Stability
All I can think of right now is USB storage support so I can easily transfer captures out.
Virtual Console, improved eShop layout, apps, web browser, themes, folders, improved pointer controls, voice chat through the Switch. What we'll get in reality? Stability.
Folders. Dear lord, how we need folders.
If that firmware leak video is indeed fake, like suspected then there will be lots of disappointed gamers if they don't at least match it.
Ironically, if that video never existed and the official update only included half of those features, then those same gamers would have been happy.
RumourLife > NintendoLife
If it doesn't feature a startup message saying "is your body ready" I'm kickin' off !
Nope, not riding the hype. Done with 5.0 update and Direct until I hear facts. Taking away too much of my potential gaming time
Just stay away with the ugly themes like the 3DS had.
Let us hope and Pray we get that Rainway app tho,a good dedicated Web Browser,Virtual Console including GameCube games! YouTube app,Themes with music in the background,Bluetooth support for wireless headphones,Folders,Part Chat app and lastly that My Freaking Rewards for the Nintendo switch section on Nintendo.com my rewards I have soooooooooooooo sooooo many platinum coins and gold coins already! Nintendo stop being asses and let us Nintendo fans get what we deserve already we are loyal fans of urs not Fair and you know it!
I think themes are definitely likely. Why else would it say basic black and basic white? Why not just black and white if they didn’t plan on adding themes? Why is it basic if white and black are the only options? Maybe I’m looking too much into this...
They'll probably skip straight to 6.0 just to prove that the 'leak' was a fake!
@AlwaysGreener RumourXplain > GameXplain
hopefully we will get proper support for the Nintendo GameCube controller adapter as well as some virtual console games. we also need a way to organize all of the games we have purchased.
I could really use folders at this point. I got a ton of games by now and it would really help me organize it so it isn't just one big selection.

EDIT: @abbyhitter Darn, I hate when I don't read the other comments!
Virtual console and browser (or themes). I don’t care about folders, not a big deal for me.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE yea. A better eshop layout. Current eshop is not appropriate for a successful console.
I just hope the fake reveal doesnt get people's hopes up too much if Nintendo just reveal 1 feature like with a web browser, Youtube, the ability to search for games by developer on eShop, etc....
Guys, most of you are forgetting the most important feature of all! Nintendo has known about it for years and has teased it's release... That's right... The most Stability that you'll ever see in a single update!
Folders would be nice to tidy up the UI.
Themes would also be nice.
Keep the eShop slick, fast, and SILENT; however we need sections dividing games by price, genres, recommendations and perhaps weekly themes for exposure.
VC would be nice though only if we can transfer past purchases and if its development has no impact on release of newer games.
Same applies to any features like browser or streaming apps.
Messaging service between friends would also be nice.
@TheOpponent Actually yeah, that would be awesome. We've already got ports on the dock, it would make perfect sense.
I always figured Nintendo releases leaks to test the market response. Either way the amount of Buzz and Pressure of the thinks we want might force their hand to give us cloud saves and a web browser
Something that makes all the games $10.
VC, eShop-Allow Screenshots, Reviews, better sorting, allow currency across Regions/Users.
Switch needs a stability update. My kickstand is kind of flimsy.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Wouldn't it be great if Nintendo surprised us all and actually gave us what you listed? But yes, in reality we will probably just get stability.
Crazy unfounded speculative thoughts pulled out of one's posterior, masking as "news"? Sure, why not.
1) Savegame backups to SD without any boneheaded restrictions like we had on the Wii
2) Cloud save backups (different than #1), perhaps tied into the online service
3) Folders
4) Better eShop interface allowing for better/easier discovery and searching
5) More non-game app services besides Hulu (Netflix, Youtube, Amazon Prime video, Plex)
6) Bluetooth headset support
7) Some of that "Nintendo charm" added into the OS UI. All the little fun touches that made the Wii and Wii U UI special and enjoyable. The background music for each section. The quirky fun channels that provided all sorts of simple engagement outside of the games themselves. I really miss that.
@AlexOlney bring back alex asks
Just want to know, is there really a Direct tomorrow or not? If there is then that’ll be perfect to announce what will be in the update not the direct
Not watching the video, although stunned there is no streaming apps, as Switch is perfect for stuff like that. Themes would be nice and Eshop music as well, as long as it doesn't slow the Switch down (guess I am the only one who likes how quick it is to startup and suspend games)
@chardir literally the best possible comment :'D

"News and rumors you care about"
Oh, please Nintendo.
Make it happen from the Next Nintendo Direct.
I would like diff themes, I'm not that type of person to care but be nice:) make em really cheap like 99p coz it a theme lol... Uhhh some way of msging your friends on it?
Yeah, I want everything updated.. and .. yeah. That’s all I want.
I don’t really care about anything apart from updates that make the system work better, but, I do find the interface rather bland when in TV mode, although it is perfect for handheld mode.
But it’s not the end of the world.
@AlexOlney i need a new nintendo life shirt...i still have my blue one.
and yes i still look good in it.
Decent voice chat please. I honestly don't care about virtual console. Their statements about updating older games to have online multiplayer sounds more interesting.
All the stuff in the fake 5.0 seemed realistic. Maybe just not all in one, so I think we get like half of the new features.
Did we have confirmation that the next firmware update was definitely 5.0? My Switch is on 4.10... there are a lot more 4s to go before we get to 5!
@sremick I can't see Nintendo ever allowing fully unrestricted saves to the SD card as this allows potential exploits & save file alteration. Something like Cloud Storage is a lot more likely however as only Nintendo would have access to the files between transfer. There shouldn't be ANY charge for the function though, it should be built into the standard online charge.
@SanderEvers Yup, USB-C OTG cables allow things like wireless controller dongles & keyboards etc to connect in handheld mode so I can't see why external storage like memory sticks wouldn't work just as well.
I find it interesting that there are still people out there that think the Switch doesn't have native voice chat because it's not powerful enough... the original Xbox had native voice chat... I think one of the DS Pokémon games gave you access to voice chat for Jimminy Crickets sake!
@SanderEvers I have a USB-C flash drive, and any process that involves powering the system down isn't "really easily" to me.
More themes, a simple browser plus folders. Then Switch is perfct.
I don't want a super-slow system like PS4/One just for functions I barely use.
@DanteSolablood They can encrypt them. Simple. The restrictions I'm referring to was the nonsensical inability to back up savegames for any game with online play.
@sremick Encryption is possible, but any type of encryption worth using is fairly CPU intensive & would be pretty slow on the Switch.
Plus you still have the issue that once someone breaks into the code for the Switch, they'll be able to decrypt & re-encrypt the save files at will anyway... e.g. Pokémon.
Who cares. Give me a new F-Zero.
A web browser, wireless headset, and Netflix!
If the online chat rumor is true, then I would be very glad. However, I would like it to be so that I can chat with anyone, not just with friends. Because, as far as I'm aware, I only have one friend in real life who owns a Switch.
But I would personally like an Internet browser, as well as streaming and social media apps. I saw in the video above alleged support for Netflix and Crunchyroll, two streaming apps that I use frequently. To have that on the go and not have to use my phone or bring my computer with me would be awesome.
The Direct was scheduled for 11th, but the fake OS 5.0 video made Nintendo delayed the Direct because now everyone is expecting those new features on Switch.
Nintendo is now implementing all those exciting new features in 5.0 in addition to the stability supplement we need. The delay is worth it.
We need stables will someone please think of the horses lol.
