We've covered some pretty unique Zelda: Breath of the Wild glitches in the past, but this latest one is interesting for the fact that it allows you to experience the game in an entirely different way.
With some deft save state tinkering, it's possible to exit the Shrine of Resurrection without picking up the all-important Sheikah Slate - perhaps the single most useful item in the entire game. The Slate controls runes and also serves as your map of Hyrule, after all. If you fancy trying the game without it, follow these steps:
- Start a new game, and save that game when you're in the Shrine of Resurrection BEFORE picking up the Slate
- Open a save file where you’re outside of the Shrine of Resurrection and head towards a ledge (you can create an ice block to do this)
- Press A to climb down, and then pause at the same moment
- Reload the save in the Shrine of Resurrection. If done correctly, Link should collapse the second he wakes up in the Shrine of Resurrection
- And voila, he’s now outside the Shrine minus Sheikah Slate!
Thankfully, despite the lack of Slate, you'll still be able to use runes, control Divine Beasts and interact with terminals in the game world. However, there are some things which make playing a bit harder. The lack of a map means you can't teleport, so you've got to walk everywhere - and that increases the chances of meeting danger on the way, making this quite a tough way to play. Without the Slate time doesn't seem to pass in the game, either. That could be considered a bonus, because that means there are no Blood Moons.
The most interesting thing about this glitch is that it's entirely reversible - if you get fed up of not having the Slate you can simply revisit the Shrine of Resurrection and pick is up.
Have you already tried this glitch? Let us know with a comment.

Hmm wonder what happens when u find shrines or objectives when their is no map?🤔
This actually sounds super fun. I wish they'd update the game with tons of save files already. Disagea 5 gives you 99, after all. It simply isn't that hard to give players the choice to play as many times as they like. Y'know, without making throwaway user accounts.
"and interact with terminals in the game world."
That explains why it can present a "challenge" rather than just make the game unwinnable. The moment I read the title, I had many questions like "how the hay do you access shrines to so much as earn the paraglider and get off the plateau". XD I suppose the towers still magically feed the landscape data to your mini-map, too?
Someone should find a glitch to unlock all the amiibo content.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I hope the Winter DLC pack is completely unplayable without the Champion Amiibo.
How are no blood moons a bonus? You will run out of weapons eventually, ores won't respawn etc. Or can you still sit by a fire and let blood moons happen that way?
@essiw Doesn't that make it a better challenge then? There are a finite number of monsters in the world, but also a finite number of weapons to kill them with (excepting those that recharge or can be reformed for a fee which includes the use of other finite resources)? Iron Man mode!
I bet the no time passing thing is all about that first view outside the cave. They want new players to be able to spend as much time as they like dicking about with the controls before they pick up the slate and still get the iconic mid-morning view across Hyrule when they step outside.
@nunberry haha true, I didn't look at it that way.
I would definitely try this if there were multiple save files! 😡
I wonder if the game crashes at some point, as I believe the blood moon is also a way to save memory. If it's not there, the game has to keep every defeated enemy, opened chest, etc. in a save file, which might become quite big depending on how they save the data.
@Rebusmind I saw a video that the game will force a blood moon (even during the day) if it needs to free up memory. I think the multiple blood moon glitch people see are a result of that.
1:28 Off camera: "Link...LINK! YOU'RE ON!!!"
1:34 Link thinking: 'I don't think anyone noticed.'
If you time doesn't change during the game when you don't have the slate, does the weather stay the same, too? That would be a pretty nice bonus.
I can already imagine people doing 3 heart no Sheikah slate runs. Not for me!
I would love no Blood Moons...If, for no other reason than there are certain heavily wooded areas that I find disorienting, and I would love to clear-cut them once and for all!
@Hokanchu
The worst part about Blood Moons to me is the cut scene and annoying voice acting.
With no blood moons, you could literally embark on a mission to wipe out every enemy in Hyrule! I might have to do this...
@DoctorWily BotW genocide route. I love it!
New challenge: try beating Zelda without launching the game!
If the weather never changes, then there are a number of shrines that won't appear. Is there even a day / night cycle?
This is the real hero's path mode.
Really scraping the bottom of the barrel for other ways to play this limited game. Or one could just go play the Master Mode that no one played because it was offensively unbalanced from the start.
@Haru17 What are you talking about?
I already finished the Master Mode. And I know a lot of people that already did too.
@Olmectron The thread seemed kinda sleepy, I didn't know many were braving the regenerating health.
@Haru17 Woah watch out, you might cut yourself on that edge
This is stupid, why would anyone do that?
I don't see the challenge in having no Sheikah Slate. If anything, it would just be less fun and more tiring to play without being able to teleport.
And seriously, who cares about the Blood Moon?! I just always skip the cutscene and continue doing what I was doing. Blood Moons really have no effect on my gameplay whatsoever.
@LegendOfPokemon it takes 8 seconds to create another profile, you dont need a Nintendo account just a simple profile with no accont linked to it will work
@ValhallaOutcast Oh yeah I forgot each account has its own save 😛
Eh ? Seriously ?
@th3r3ds0x Funny! Dont like the idea to not start the game but I never saw this as a challenge. But Its a real challenge !
No thanks. I'll just use the slate.
not having a Blood Moon would be great. i hate how it makes the enemies regenerate and whatnot. also time not passing by seems a bit interesting. hopefully the game can allow us what part of day we want to stop in.....
Everybody is forgetting the most important bonus of a never-ending day... No stal enemies.
Best to create a new profile just to try this in hard mode before Nintendo patches it out. :S
Nice glitch.
@Haru17 i beat master mode just after getting enugh hearts to pull the master sword i was just goffing around 40 min later the credit were rolling lolz, i did it with raw food. The sword challenge on master mode well that's another story. I still have nightmares with it.
Is finishing the game this way even possible? It seems to me you'd need the Sheikah Slate for operating the beast dungeons. Granted, you can make it Ganon without completing them, but I really wouldn't consider that "finishing".
