It has been confirmed that Hori's cool-looking Splatoon 2 headset is coming to the west, joining a whole host of other lovely related merchandise and products.
The device - which has to be connected to both your Switch and your smartphone to enable voice chat via a special application - is designed to resemble the same cans the characters wear in-game.
It features interchangeable decorative plates and a removable mic, and is officially licensed by Nintendo itself.
Here's some PR:
Officially licensed by Nintendo. Dive into Splatoon 2 with HORI's Splatoon 2 Splat & Chat Headset, the first chat-enabled headset for the Nintendo Switch. Enjoy in-game sound and voice chat at the same time in Splatoon 2's online multiplayer mode. Strategize with friends in the SplatNet 2 online lobby, then communicate with teammates during the heat of battle! This headset was designed as a replica of the male Inkling character's in-game headset, and it features interchangeable decorative plates to reflect your personality.

The design look pretty cool but the wires...
Uuuuuugggggggh...
Enable loads of different kinds of headsets Nintendo, you cheapskate. My current headphones have a mic! I'm not paying another £30 just to voice chat for what could possibly be a single game!
Nintendo's own voice chat solution will be just as convoluted. That's if there is even one, I think this could just be it. They'll let 3rd parties release peripherals instead.
I'll just stick to discord.
@ThatNyteDaez The splitter is only if you want the gamesound and the voicechat at the same time, so normal headphones with mics should work with the voice app.
This could've worked in 2007
Preordered last night. Come at me, wires! Nah, I'm just gonna use it for the game sound. Currently my only other earbuds are the iPhone lightning buds, so I needed a new set anyway. And $30 is not bad at all for themed headphones. I just wish we had the Japanese packaging.
Those preview images on Amazon don't help :v
These are neat! A clever way of just simply ' mixing ' in game sound and voice chat! Very clever that the voice chat now doesn't take up any processing power from the Switch... I'm happy!
Here's my question, will we only be allowed to chat with friends?
Or will Nintendo allow us to chat with strangers that are on our team?
@leo13 No. Stranger is Danger in Nintendo Land.
That now infamous diagram with all those wires is so embarrassing.
@leo13
I think it's only with friends, either in matches or in the online lobby.
atarashii
@SLIGEACH_EIRE in that case I don't want it. I can't ever seen to get schedules to match up with me friends to play so if I can't chat with random people than this is useless to me. Otherwise I would have been willing to look past all the extra wires
This Is too cool to pass up, it's got a regular auxcord so I'm game I don't use chat anyway, and if I did I'll wait till there's a better solution. If the joycon grip, or Pro controller had a jack it would probably solve a lot of problems
Not 3 wires, 2 wires. TECHNICALLY it's 3, if every plug is detachable from the breakout box, but otherwise, there's really two cords, one from the headset to the phone, and one from a mid-way breakout box to the console. I see it more as one cable with a breakout box as a Y-adapter attached to split the second cable more than seeing it as 3 cables. Still a little chaotic, but the diagrams were clearly not made by the PR department
@Luna_110 @leo13 I'm pretty sure it's game dependent. For Splatoon it's friends only I'm pretty sure, but that's not to say some future Ubisoft game or such couldn't implement randoms chat. (Though, personally, chatting with randoms is obnoxiously awful. I don't chat with friends either, but that's still infinitely more desirable than randoms! You'd probably do better just friending a bunch of people here at NL to play with than randoms. We're still all "random" ish, but at least pretty much everyone here will be a few cuts above true "randoms"!)
@NickOfTime90 Really? I did not know that...
...I'd be absolutely fine with having just voice chat coming through the headset - so that's really good to know, thanks!
Honestly, I couldn't care less about the voice chat features. I just want them because they look fresh.
I don't have any friends who play this, and it'll be my first time with Splatoon. Will I be able to talk with teams in matches, if I uh...don't have any friends?
Uhhh, on-ear neckband headset... really bad idea. Used to have headphones with that design, can't move my head without ripping my ears back. Also teribble for long sessions.
Question though. Can't you just plug in your existing headphones to your phone and just pump the volume of the in-game sounds through your tv? I mean my Apple earbuds that came with my iPhone aren't noise cancelling. And they have a microphone built-in. So why is this necessary? I don't like the idea of being tethered to my Switch and my phone, might not make a comfortable play situation, especially if the chord is really small (similar to NES Classic controller).
@Dang69 I'm in the same situation as u on this one.I dont know how they expect u to get friends on here with not many online games and when there is one its limited, or no chat.
Nothing in the splatoon theme looks fresh, it all looks kinda terrible. Just my opinion of course, I just don't get the pink and green, over the top, trying to go out of their way to acknowledge they know how to reference the 90's theme.
Not being able to chat with randoms is a big turnoff for me. And it's not as if you'll see somebody's unique username (lol remember when we had hope for that?) and even have the option of adding them to your friend list in-game. Instead you'll rely on the "suggested friends" feature ex post facto.
The Switch is absolutely a great console but the online side is horrible (communication/adding friends quickly in-game etc). Definitely a giant leap back from the Wii U (which made adding friends a breeze) and, in many ways, it's ignorant of the last 20-30 years of advances in communication technology.
Also moderation within this kind of an ecosystem from Nintendo's end is virtually non-existent. If you run into vile behavior there is no recourse in terms of reporting the responsible party. Plus they can change their user ID AND friend codes on a whim and continue with the bad behavior that Nintendo is supposedly shielding us from by making these decisions.
UGH, just update the Switch software to support Bluetooth headphones/headsets and allow for in-game chat through the Switch itself, this is nonsense!
I'll get these next month. spending way too much money this month plus Taiko Conference prep.
I'm certainly ordering this, but what's with Amazon classifying this as 'decorations'? The reviews don't even seem to match the product...
I love the headset design.
I hate everything else that comes with it.
I'm hoping after July 21st that all new and previously released online games utilize the Smart Device Support. I also hope that we are able to talk to randoms on our team or even random opponents on games like NBA 2K18 or WWE.
Smart Device Support** - An upcoming smart-device application for the Nintendo Switch system will allow players to set play appointments with friends and teammates, as well as voice chat with friends during play sessions.
Honestly, as much of a pain in the butt this will be to deal with, $30 isnt that bad for what it gives you
I have a feeling this was made for let's players so they can record the chat. If they sold the widget that looks like a guitar petal separately for about $9.99, I'd just get the widget. Unless I wanted a cosplay prop. Then I'd get the set.
I have to get this. There will be more use for this than just combining Switch sound and phone chat. There are plenty of other occasions where listening to two things at once is handy.
And I love how the plug is Squid shaped.
Yeesh. Too much wires...
With all the wires you can actually look like a squid
I'll wait for reviews on the product. Don't want to buy crappy headphones
All my friends on the switch are from NL, My gaming friends are all PC or PS4. Am 100% sure the folks here will be better to chat with than the usual racist, sexist and just vile stuff that has become the norm in most online games. I will not miss open chat one bit
I've taken the fact that this needs to be plugged into Switch for granted. That would be seriously hampering with my current set-up.
It's a shame, i would have tolerated it being attached to my phone, but not limiting me to handheld mode or sitting blindingly close to my TV (or using a really long jack extender.
