So people have told me that your online purchases are not linked to your online account? So what happened if my console gets destroyed or something? It's just all gone??

Indeed, it's all gone forever! Isn't Nintendo just awesome? You should have bought a PS3 or PS4 instead.

I plan on getting a ps4 after a price drop. The Wii u is still a really cool system to me though. Hopefully they start doing some updates to their network.

Everything is gone despite Nintendo having multiple instances of Online profiles. (Nintendo Network, Club Nintendo, DDP). Its kind of the reason i'm hesitant to buy much digital content on my 3DS anymore.

For the most part yes.. unless your planning on replacing your console.. there is a way to contact Nintendo.. to have them move stuff to a new system from what I understand.. just explain what the situation is.. and they will tell you how.. or make sure you can download again your purchases.. so you will have access to them..and just reload them.. it takes some effort sure.. but it's worth it.. if you want to save your purchases..

I think NintendoLife needs to ask Nintendo about this and make an article on this. I'm getting tired of having to prove people wrong on this again and again and again. Heck, even my brother thought there was no way to get back digital.

I should send them an e-mail myself and report it.

Dear De Papier,

Thank you for your email. Currently, our Nintendo end user agreement states that You are responsible for any purchases made using your Network Account in Nintendo eShop. Nintendo eShop purchases are non-refundable and non-transferable unless otherwise stated in the terms posted for a specific offer or required by law. Digital Content is licensed, not sold, from the Content Provider to you through the Nintendo eShop, solely for your personal, non-commercial use on your Nintendo Device or as we permit through the Network Services.... Digital Content licenses that are purchased through your Nintendo Account and downloaded to a Nintendo Device may be available for access and use through other Nintendo Accounts on that Nintendo Device.

We are often asked why your account is linked with the specific Nintendo Device.
Nintendo is under constant threat of IP piracy and misuse. See; http://www.nintendo.co.uk/Legal/Nintendo-s-Anti-Piracy-Progra...
If one person has an account and can activate the account on multiple devices, then one purchase will work for many users who can take advantage of the first purchase. There is no way to ascertain that the same person is using the single account on multiple devices. We tried to come up with a fair way to handle this problem. If your console breaks you may send it to us for repairs and we will transfer the content if necessary. In addition, we allow transfer of the content from one console to another, both in the 3DS, from 3DS to 3DS and from 3DS to 3DXL and vice versa, from the Wii to the Wii U and between Wii U devices. We are constantly examining our polices in this respect, and we hope you find them fitting to your needs.

Again we appreciate your feedback and thank you for continuing to support Nintendo products.

Nintendo Team

Since I don't have any other consoles anyone would care to explain how does it work in the 360 and PS3 and how they manage to prevent piracy without linking games to the physical console?

For Microsoft, it's pretty simple. Now, they may have changed procedures, but in early 2008, when my family did an account switch, we had to make a passport account. (when I say that, I mean make an account on xbox.com). Then we linked our gamertag to the passport account. If you made your gamertag on Xbox.com, then you didn't need it, since the info was already there. When you want to put your gamertag with all your games, achievements, friends, etc. onto another system, then there's a recover option (I think that's what it's worded as, it's been a while) that lets you send your data from one system to the other. Just type in your email and password associated with your passport account and you'll get all of your games, achievements, friends, etc. However, you won't get your save data (once again, as of 2008), but you can just put it onto a memory card.

As for your account on the other system, it will become inactive on it. Gamertags can only be active on one hard drive at a time.

Microsoft prevents piracy by having an enormous online presence with their system. If you want to put games on your hard drive and play them from there, you have to download them from their store.

Frankly, I don't see how not having an account system prevents piracy. I'd think it'd be the other way around.
