Topic: Swords & Soldiers - Your opinion

I have just completed the campaign mode on Swords & Soldiers which took about 7-8 hours overall and it was a very enjoyable game. The story was entertaining as were the various characters in the game. Although the campaign mode was a little short there is a fair amount of replay value with the achievements, skirmish, unlockable mini-games and multi-player. It is a game i would recommend, even if you are not normally into strategy games as it is not too in depth that it becomes confusing, the waves just get more intense as you progress but the learning curve isn't too steep. I give it a 8.5 out of 10

What is your opinion on S&S (if you have it), no spoilers please.

Does this have Wi-Fi multiplayer, Stevie, or is it just local? Also, if it does have Wi-Fi, what's your experience with it?

I don't have it, but the developers have said there's no wi-fi multi-player from the get-go. Might have scoreboards or something though, I don't know.

I downloaded it today and, without finish it, I can say that it has fulfilled my expectations. There are a few faults for me, as you can not stop the warriors, who advance without control towards the enemy. But you should to get used as part of game mode. Extras met to perfection. An 8.5 for me too. Very, very funny and entertaining.

Sadly there is no wi-fi, local multiplayer is the same as the skirmish mode , you pick your race, a map (not a lot of variation between them) and can alter the starting gold, mana, workers etc. The lack of wi-fi support is what would stop me scoring this 9/10.
Also there is no scoreboard as you don't really get a score. At the end of each stage it gives you information such as time taken, units/spells used etc, but this information is not saved in any form.

If anyone has tried the multiplayer, I'd love to hear about it.

No wi-fi for a game like this means a harder sell to me, because I'm assuming most of the replay appeal to lie in multiplayer matches. And since I don't really have many friends in this town who are willing to sit and play video games all night (boo to them!) I end up relying on wi-fi.

Good definition. But every RTS is a bit buttonmashing, don't you think?. I miss only bigger maps, with more alternative ways, and more control of your troops.

This is very true but what you have to remember is that this is a wiiware game, and is in my opinion comparable to lost winds, in that it has the quality of a full release, but there is only so much you can fit into a Wiiware game, so it is a short but sweet experience but with some replay value, esp if you want to get all the achievements !!!

Is it just me or are the Aztecs the weakest faction? The jaguar warrior is overpriced (for those 50 gold other factions get units that can beat the warrior and then some), the blowdart dudes are weak vs Chinese sword dudes, the giants get instakilled by Chinese zen masters (or stunned by monkeys) and their spells are the least effective (no support spells, the cage never works for more than 1-2 seconds in real situations, poison is decent but arrow rain is better and costs the same to use).

Raincoat whore!

I agree with the people complaining about the units control and the missing Wi-Fi, but it's an impressive game.

@ KDR_11k: Nope, you just need to know when to sacrifice people and make god use of the traps. IMO chinese are the weakest.

I really am enjoying the game at the moment, although I must say I am stuck on the last level of the aztec campaign (at least I think it is the last).

It is the one where you are vs both the vikings and the chinese at the same time, and you get to build viking units as well as your own.

I keep getting hopelessly destroyed for some reason. I can kill the viking base, but then as soon as I get close to the chinese base, suddenly he is producing 5 times more soldiers than I can handle, and he proceeds to push me right back to my base and kill me. No idea where I am going wrong, I am spamming units as fast as I get the gold for it. I use the boulder spell whenever I can, but it doesnt seem to make a dent against the unstoppable waves of doom, even when the chinese guy has 0 gold collectors.

Any hints on how to actually beat this one would be nice. I have pretty much breezed through the other levels up till this one, so its quite a sticking point for me

No Wi-Fi, big shame. I think even if you can find somebody to play with, the gameplay takes time to get good at. But I think this game was meant for a single player experience.

So would you recommend this game to someone that has never played an RTS? I need something to do in between doing Gentleman's Mode on Hatsworth, and waiting for when I can go to the city to get Klonoa. This game looks really interesting and fun, but I'm just not sure if I'll like it.

Check out my classy comics.

Drake

I'm actually stuck at the exact same level you are, Lazarou. I actually went ahead and did the entire Chinese campaign but still can't beat the final Aztec stage.

Managed to beat it a few hours ago, now all I need to do is get a single achievement (Lost Vikings) and I'm all done

Care to share how?

I tried it a couple more times last night, still getting massacred by 500 ninja monkeys. That cloning spell he keeps using seems to make it impossible. How do you counter it? >_<

Whoa, Monkey Man? Is that an edit, or did the name / quote bug strike Drake much harder than it did me?
