This reminds me of that thing a while back where Roger Ebert said videogames can never be art.
Morons I tell you. They wouldn't know a good game if it smacked them in the face.

Actually Link, I think Ebert's comment was made with the intention of getting people to justify their views of why they already are art. In fact, a good deal of very well-spoken responses came out of that, and the defense pieces were (on the whole) well articulated.

I can't say for sure, but Ebert is commonly a pretty open-minded guy about where art can and can't be found, and I think he was just trying to get people to write intelligently about a medium that nearly always gets either glossed over or thoughtlessly ignored. From that viewpoint, it worked.

But, yeah. EW is the butts.

Must be a joke. Did they really really played son many games to say that EY is the worst game this year? I cuold easily say 101 Party Megamix as the worst game of this year.

Weird. At the worst, Epic Yarn is inoffensive. I'll admit that there were a few personal control issues, but overall it doesn't really force you to want to tear it to pieces.

Most places don't have time to review the shovel ware. Really what they are saying is Kirby is worst of the best/most popular/mainstream games of the year. Clearly there are worse but some people are too insecure to like a game that is "cute".

lame. that's actually one of the magazines i read for pop culture, and I like the hour or so of entertainment it gives me a week. they're obviously not known for covering video games and that opinion is lame. of course it isn't the worst game of the year, but their target audience is not gamers. I guess if they decide to say anything about video games at all they have to mention games everyone on earth has heard of, and write an opinion article with some bite. making fun of the endless crap 5 dollar games that nobody has heard of would be pointless.

@ Chicken Brutus: I think that you flatter Ebert's intelligence and his intentions. Ebert's commentary that games could never be art was in my view never intended as an attempt to start conversation, but rather as a definitive statement of his own narrow views that films could be art whereas games could not. I work in the arts as a university academic so I understand quite well that the attempt to define art is a fruitless one. The debate is 2500 years old, at least according to the published record. Only someone who is uneducated in the matter, like Ebert, would say that one or another art form was ineligible of being considered 'art'. For me, though, I would venture that of all the arts, film nowadays is artistically the most bankrupt.

I read "Kirby's Epic Yarn rated the worst game of the year" and I was like "SAY WHAT!?"

Then I read " by Entertainment Weekly" and immediately stopped caring. Can we get some real gamers to start reviewing games and not some wannabes who don't know the difference between Samus and Master Chief.

If Kirby's Epic yarn was the worst game of the year, this would have to be the best year for gaming ever if a game that amazing is at the bottom.

Wow. I thought Epic Yarn was great, and the graphics were beautiful. I guess Flashlight on DSiWare was better to them.

...unless he was saying it with the intention of starting a debate. And a debate did start, and hasn't died down yet. One of the most effective ways to get intelligent discussion out of somebody (as opposed to "I liked it" / "I disliked it") is to put them in a position in which their opinion must be justified...or, at least, explained more fully...before it is accepted. Nearly always they will surprise themselves; putting something into words forces you to consider things a little more deeply than the passive act of holding an opinion does.

I'm not saying that that's what Ebert did. I have no way of knowing. But without question, the upshot has been a torrent of intelligent rebuttals. And that means that his criticism was productive after all!

Even if based on opinion, I'm sure there was something that was equal to crap.

Ok, I get the part about the game being "irritating" because collecting all the treasures in the game were a bit of a pain to find them, but calling it the "Worst game ever of this year" isn't pushing it way too far ?

Sorry. I lost my mind for a sec. Let me be reasonable. Clearly, these guys don't know a good game when they see one. Kirby's Epic Yarn might not be Game of the Year (sorry, Corbie), but it is definately not the worst game of 2010. It plays great, looks great, and sounds great. It's also a great game to play with the ladies. What's not to like? Worst Game of the Year, my butt!

So they're saying that Hydrophobia, Baby Sitting Mama, Tournament of Legends, Kung Fu Rider, and Sonic Free Riders are all better than Kirby's Epic Yarn? What? That doesn't even make sense. I mean, a total Nintendo hater would at least acknowledge that it isn't total shovelware.
