Really? Because I feel I like the last three NSMB games were the real step in the wrong direction.

That has nothing to do with anything.

It has to do with Mario, Mario Platformers, the basis of his comment, recent Mario games, the direction the franchise is taking and the lovely thing we're all sharing called opinions. What exactly is the problem?

What about a game where you play as Wario/Waluigi and you work for Bowser, trying to stop Mario from capturing Princess Peach?! That's one thing I like about Infamous on PS3...you can decide whether you can be a protagonist or an antagonist. With Nintendo you're just about always Mario and your goal is to save Peach. Boring...switch it up a little!

Of course Nintendo would never make it so that the bad guy wins though...but I don't care WHAT the next Mario game is like as long as I don't need to save Peach from Bowser again.

I like that idea. Maybe a Bowser's Castle Hub World, along with Peach's Castle, and something else..

Looking for some 3DS and Wii U friends. PM me if interested!

I don't really like the hub world. I think Mario games actually work better with just a level select. That said, I do like it when a group of levels fits into a theme, like ice or desert worlds, rather than being arranged seemingly at random. 3D Land got a lot right, like the health system just making your shrink with one hit and die with another, and the swimming, which is just jumping over and over again. Perhaps the camera isn't so much fixed, but definitely directed and out of player control. I'm sure it'll be amazing regardless though...

I am currently playing through Red Dead Redemption (setting: Wild West) and it has quite a large open world. For those of you who haven't played it, you travel through the wild west on horse back or, if you want to save time, you can quickly travel between town via stage coach. You have main storyline with tons of side quests.

Can you imagine the Mushroom Kingdom with this type of game style? Have a vehicle (Karts / buggies / Yoshi?) for Mario to travel through this huge open landscape. Within the towns/destinations you will have great platforming stages where you will complete the main game missions and can also have massive amounts of side quests for collecting stars or other collectables.
I haven't played Lego City Undercover (Wii U) yet, but from what I read, it seems to follow a similar formula.

As great as Mario Galaxy was, it was too linear in my opinion.

My 5 improvements:
1. A large open world.
2. Some sort of transport system to explore this wide open new world (Buggy / kart / Yoshi).
3. Lots of side quests to earn collectables.
4. Be different to previous game styles (like Super Bros. 2 was to the rest of the series).
5. No sequel to Galaxy or Sunshine. Something new and fresh please.

5. A Large Hub World. Super Mario 64 is a memorable game. For many it was their first Mario game, and Peach's Castle is the best known aspect of the entire game. Exploring the courtyard and finding new parts of the castles was really exciting and added this awesome sense of depth. While Super Mario Sunshine's Hub world was much larger than the castle, it seemed less memorable to me. The Observatory in Galaxy was all right, but a step down from the previous two. Galaxy 2's Mario Planet wasn't really a hub world as it was a playground to test your skills, and 3D Land lacked one all together. I don't know if there should be an upgraded Peach's Castle, or something completely new, but I think this game definitely needs ones.

I completely agree with this. Exploring the hub world was one of the main reasons I fell in love with SM64 and SMSunshine. SMGalaxy & SMGalaxy 2 were great because they were a lot of fun, but they didn't offer as much gameplay depth as the previous titles did.

4. Day and Night System in the Hub World. As game consoles become more powerful, a sense of immersion in video games is becoming greater and greater. In Animal Crossing, one thing that always added to the experience was playing the game at night and seeing that the in game world was dark just like the real world. I also liked how Nintendo Land incorporated a similar effect, however you had to manually change the time of day. Say the Hub World is Peach's Castle. Now imagine playing the game in the daytime and seeing the sun in the sky, causing reflections on the water, windows in the castle had light beams coming from them, and there were clouds visible in the sky. Now imagine playing the game at night, seeing the moon in the sky, and having a more mellow rendition of the song playing. When you go inside, the Toad's are sleeping, and everything seems a bit calmer. This isn't necessary for all the levels, but adding depth like that in the hub world would be incredible.

Seems about right! Although, didn't Super Mario Sunshine have a certain amount of Day & Night variations? Or does my memory deceive me? Hmm.

3. More Diverse Bosses. Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 all had very different and exciting bosses, however, Super Mario 3D Land had the same bosses repeating over and over. Bosses are one of the most exciting aspects of a Mario game, and having dull bosses is a huge disappointment. It doesn't matter if they're bigger versions of standard enemies, or just brand new creatures, but we need diverse boss battles!

Although SM3DLand was a 3D Mario Game, it isn't officially part of the 3D Mario game series. Not only do the gameplay mechanics prove such, but the game's title as well, Super Mario 3D Land, pushes more towards an upgraded Super Mario Land rather than a 3DS release of the 3D Mario games.

2. A New Character or Two. Adding Luigi in Galaxy was a nice step in the right direction. He had a slightly different jump and run, making the game a bit different and adding diversity. But, what if Peach was playable? Being able to glide a bit with her Umbrella, or Toad being a lot faster than Mario and Luigi. This would add replay value and diversity, especially if you needed to complete the game 100% to unlock these characters.

Princess Peach can't save herself. We all know what the plot is gonna be, Nintendo couldn't put together a decent plot if their lives depended on it. Other characters might be cool though, however I'd personally prefer we stick with the Mario / Luigi / Yoshi trifecta.

IanNoog wrote:

1. A return to non-linear gameplay. Super Mario 3D Land, in my opinion, is a merge between 2D Mario and 3D Mario, there is usually a fixed camera point, and there is only one path. In 64, Sunshine, and partially in Galaxy, there is a sense of being able to go anywhere in a level, and get any star, or find a secret one. With the power of the Wii U we could have huge diversity.

Super Mario 3d Land IS a 2D and 3D Mario merger, as is evidenced by the 3D game aspects such as stars unlocking new levels and 3D gameplay, and 2D game aspects such as flag poles marking the end of a level rather than power stars, as well as strictly linear gameplay.

Make Rosalina playable, then! And Peach unlockable after beating the game.
