Topic: Wii U needs Southpaw (swap sticks) option in Settings

I learned how to play FPS and 3rd person shooters on the N64, mostly Unreal 2. We used the 4 yellow arrows on the right side to move forward/back and strafe left/right. The analog stick was used to look/aim with the left hand. I'm a righty, but many players who started playing this way still do and most are righties too. It's ingrained.

I was really disappointed that Nano Assault Neo does not have the swap sticks option, making it unplayable for myself and many others. Even if the game lacks the option, it should be in the Wii U settings under game controllers. A simple option to swap sticks would solve the problem.

I got the PS4 at launch, picked up Killzone Shadow Fall. No southpaw. Crushed. Returned the game. Started a thread in the Killzone forum, others chimed in, many tweeted the devs. Next day a dev team member replied and said they would look into it. A week later, an update was released that included the option. Genius. This couldn't have happened that quick even 2 or 3 years ago.

Before anyone says "learn to play the right way"... this is how many of us learned. I now play Resogun, Dead Nation, Geometry Wars, Gears of War, Halo, Killzone etc... with the right stick controlling movement. Impossible to play any other way.

Make games that everyone can play. Please Nintendo, add this option in the settings and sell more systems/games. For now, my Nano Assault Neo purchase is worthless.

edit - It's ironic that I learned how to play this way on a NINTENDO SYSTEM!!

i wish all controls in general were more customizeable, and as much as i loved the snes layout, i still think they should've stuck with gamecube style. come on, a big green a button right in the middle was awesome. not to mention how many games were messed up when they went back to snes style but tried to keep a button as jump and b as run/fire.

While I agree that in a perfect world! all games would have infinitely customizable control schemes, I must say you are only making things worse for yourself by not adjusting to what has become the norm for gaming controls.

Yes Willobee, having a swap sticks option like 99% of shooters have is infinitely customizable. Thanks for your contribution...smh

Thanks Tasuki, I am aware. I was on the phone with Nintendo today and e-mailed the dev.

Just putting it out there as developers and coders read sites like these.

Geez, hostile. I did not say swapping sticks is infinitely customizable. I was saying that all games should have controls that can be mapped any which way you want. Any button to any action, camera sensitivity, etc. Things that are far too often missing in console games.

This is an open forum, and your sass is not in any way productive to a discussion.

I'm a lefty, but like all lefties I live in a right handed world, and on the most part we learn to live with it. A controller doesn't make much difference left or right handed for me because you're not asking all your arms or fingers to do much- it's mainly all thumbs and index fingers.

The only problem I ever had was in Skyward Sword where you can't swap Link to Left handed like he should be, and you can't hold and swing the Wiimote in the left hand and make him do the moves he's supposed to. That broke the game for me.

Yeah, I'm a lefty too. So playing the Wii the first time threw me off. I played a Wii Sports with my left hand, as that is of course how I would play the sports in real life. But then once I had to attach a nunchuck, I swapped the wiimote to my right. It felt weird at first since I had just become accustomed to it in my left. But seeing as the dexterity required was at least minimal for most games, I could make do.

Your comment that I'm making things worse by not adjusting to the norm was not helpful and not in any way productive to a discussion, as you say. I guess you didn't read my post the whole way through. This is how I play, started on a Nintendo system. Cannot change now as I'm playing the many games I mentioned and then some like this for almost 20 years which started before there was a "norm". I'm high up on the leaderboards of most of these games and the control is now innate. It's a simple addition to the options and no need for infinite customization.

Games that do not have this option will not be purchased by myself and the many others who play like this.

We wasn't saying to "fit in". He was saying that custom controls across the entire board, INCLUDING SWITCHING JOY STICKS, should be an option. We're all in agreement, here.

Say you want the R button to be the L button. That's what having more options would bring, along with your suggestion.

Oh, Phobos. Relax. Again, I'm not trying to insult you. I'm saying by not even trying to switch over, you're only preventing yourself from enjoying many many games. Unfortunately, stamping your feet will only sway so many developers, so while again, I think all games should have fully customizable controls so that everyone can play exactly how they want, I think you just need to accept what has become a standard for most developers! or accept you won't play a bunch of exceptional games.

Oh Willobee, I don't need advice on how to deal. I'm not insulted nor was I ever hostile. You just aren't contributing anything to this thread. No need to keep repeating yourself. And it isn't a bunch of games, it's actually just Nano Assault Neo at this point. I was able to play Last of Us and Walking Dead on PS3 with a programmable controller.

If anyone's interested on how a good company listens to it's customers, view this thread:

If I would have "accepted" things as they were, it would've took longer for KZ Shadow Fall to be fixed;)

If it literally is just one game driving you nuts, why not post on Shin'ens twitter about it? They tend to respond to fans well.

Thinking about this a bit more, it isn't really about the game itself, but the controller. Just like it people don't ask for left handed amplifiers, they want left handed guitars. I'm sure if there was enough call for it, some controller company could make a universal mirrored left handed controller with the A/B/Y/X on the left and the d-pad on the right. But I would imagine after 30 odd years of playing on regular controllers, most lefties would find it hard to use.

I'm left handed and I had almost no trouble getting used to the control scheme, heck, it was hard for me to go back after I got used to the default controls.

Not all game devs listen to the fans, and sometimes you just adapt. You really can't force everything to adapt to you. I do support the idea of including a Southpaw option in all games, but let's face it, that's probably not gonna happen. A customizable controller is what we need.

what if Nintendo made a controller which you could change any button to what you want and the controller memorized that game. Would this be realistic with the next gen?

@Metroidlink The next gen is quite a few years away, but yeah, it's possible.

I don't understand why there aren't lefty controllers yet....just mirrored versions of a normal controller. Although I'm not a lefty, I really wished they existed. But oh well...alternate control schemes are nice too. Most FPSs usually allow you to at least swap the sticks. Using a 3DS must be HORRIBLE for lefties.
