As they managed to get Gamecube going? Or Virtual Boy? Its sad, but currently Wii U is the worst selling main-Nintendo console to date, Gamecube and Nintendo 64 was never this low - neither was or is Vita, PSP or PS3. Even if Nintendo manages to pick up the pace its unlikely that it will sell even close to Gamecube, even.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the PS3 and 360 were both in almost the same position...

If that wishful thinking makes you feel better over the situation, sure. But no, neither PS3 or Xbox 360 had the problems that Wii U has - neither in terms of market interest (rather lack of) or the lack of third party support.

What do you mean? I was just about to say the exact same thing. There may have been advertising and marketing everywhere for the PS3 and Xbox 360, but the Wii U has sold just as many consoles as they did, and there hasn't been much of advertising or anything yet.

First off the GCN was great. The only reason not as many people bought it, was because everyone already had a PS2 or wanted better online gaming with the Xbox.
GCN was more powerful, so that's why the power/spec argument doesn't matter, too.

The GCN was still good enough from a consumer perspective to be relevant.

As for the Virtual Boy, I totally agree. That thing wasn't appealing enough to anyone but the most hardcore fans, and they pulled it off the market.

There's no 3rd party support, because 3rd party games are usually ALWAYS multiplatform. There are no other platforms besides Wii U, so ya, there aren't going to be multiplat games.
What a surprise. (sarcasm)

... do you remember the PS3 launch and ensuing 3ish years?

No one does. Honestly, whenever I bring up the PS3's early woes, everyone calls foolhardy. It's BS to say the least...

I have both.... they are both great systems. I find myself playing the 3ds more, but I think at least part of that is due to the fact that it's still new to me. The Wii U is more robust, but I like the convenience of the 3ds. I recommend that you eventually get both.....

As bad as the PS3's situation was it's first year, it still wasn't as bad as the Wii U's. They more or less squandered their year head start over the PS4 and Xbox One. That's not to say that sales of the Wii U won't pick up. I think they will starting this quarter.

Sorry i have to correct you here, PS3 sold 3.6 Million consoles in its first fiscal year and had a very low software attachment rate. Wii U is ten months in and last time i checked the attachment rate for software was high and overall console sales was sitting at around 3.6 Million. Anyway i don't see why people are comparing stats from years ago to now anyway its a moot point, the real comparisons will start when PS4 and Xbone are at least 6 months in.

OP asked if he should buy a Wii U other consoles shouldn't come into the equation, people sneer at the Dreamcast and GC for not reaching Sony numbers but both of those consoles had awesome 1st party & 3rd party games over their life spans. Anyone who thinks Nintendo are not going to bring out some of the best games of this generation over its lifespan is kidding themselves. Just like Sony & MS are going to make sure they have some awesome 1st and 3rd party titles. If this generation is anything like the PS2 era then everyone will have a PS2 so its worth getting a DC or GC so you can play great games at home and great games at your friends houses as well.

So yeah get a Wii U for now and later down the line if you feel he need pick up a Xbone or PS4 as well if you can afford it and like the games. I'll likely get a PS4 when i see more eastern influenced games and varied genres that are not available on my PC.

@Emblem
That's fine, but the main point is that Wii U isn't doing as bad as many like to claim.

Also, I agree that the real comparisons will happen when Xbox One and PS4 are released. My argument is that it's not that bad, looking at the past for reference, but also not drawing conclusions before it's appropriate, both of which many like to ignore.

EDIT: On topic. I say get a Wii U, and a 3DS later, or at the same time.

The Wii U has some very good games like Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101 & ZombiU etc, which i recommend. There are also more new games coming very soon now like Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World etc. If you look online i'm sure will'll find a list of games for the Wii U, so you can make a decision. Especially as Xmas is coming up you'll get some good deals, also remember you have the eShop games too & the VC. Is it worth it? look at this way, your not buying the console for a few months or something you'll have it for years. So its a investment just like any other console, and especially if like the games it is worth it. hope this helps.

Yes you should
The lineup of games is something you do not want to miss:
Super Smash Bros. Wii U
The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker
Pikmin 3 (aleready out)
Donkey Kong Country
Wonderful 101

I actually think the Wii U has more games at this point in it's life than the 3ds did at the same point. The truth is the 3ds is a mobile gaming system: it's designed for short sharp bursts of 10-60 minute gaming (levels are short and save points are close together etc...), whereas the U has games designed that you really need an hour+ to appreciate. the 3ds is better at puzzlers, the U is better at fighting games- it's just the mechanics of play. Other genres are about equal. Both either have or will have very soon Zelda, Mario2d and 3d, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, and Donkey Kong.

Ask yourself if you are going to be sitting there playing for ages, or for short periods of time and you'll answer your question.

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

Excellent point- and maybe why I play my 3ds more....I like to be able to just pick it up and play for 20 minutes, then put it down. BUT, at the same time, I feel that that Wii U has a much more rich playing experience. I love both systems.

Don't you just love it when people half quote you and miss the broader point?

I did say "almost" and went on to talk about other consoles. I do agree with the point about third party support on the Wii U however I think focusing on that misses the point. Nintendo has always had trouble with third party support and despite that fact the PS3 still had a lot of trouble in its first year while the Wii didn't. The 360 did have trouble in its first year and at the time its only competition was the PS2. In terms of launches the Wii U's isn't good but I think people pour on the hyperbole a bit when they talk about it.

For launches the Wii U has been a 5/10... but the 3DS was a 4, the 360 was maybe a 6, the PS3 maybe got a 5.5. Every launch is going to look average compared to the sort of sales we're used to seeing. Every launch is going to look average compared to the Wii.

Well in terms of year leads the 360 was second to the Wii well before the end of 2007. Truth is recent history has shown us that the success and failure of consoles are highly unpredictable. There have been consoles in the Wii U's position that have ended up being hits (3DS), middle of the road (Gamecube) and outright failures (Dreamcast). So I wouldn't go betting on what will happen to the Wii U.
