I believe I have figured out that the Nintendo NX will release in the next 1.5-2 years. Here is my reasoning: Based on the dates of the Wii and Wii U, we can extrapolate the probable release date of the next console. Now, I wasn't expecting the NX until 2018 based on previous patterns, but the poor sales performance of the Wii U has clearly sped up their schedule. (They lost stock value the day it was displayed and it did poorly at launch, so they've probably been working on the NX since mid 2013). Based on the Wii U (Wii did not have a significant lapse between it's announcement, unveiling, and launch), the NX prototype will be revealed sometime early next year, and will launch either before Christmas or early 2017. NX has been rumored for about a year (well, longer, really, because of the Wii U's failure), and it's been officially announced recently. Now, they've said they won't tell us anymore until next year, but that's probably when the unveiling is. The leaked details also mach the Wii U's pre-release. When they do unveil the console, it will likely be released in the next 5-8 months. That puts it's release late 2016 or early 2017.
I think the NX will launch Nov 2016. It's sad to see the Wii U did not catch on and as such will have its lifespan reduced as a result. It's a great console.
@krakensoup: Yup. Nintendo's fault for not advertising it well, though. If the third party Developers won't touch it, there's no way to save it. If it's doing badly because you don't have third party support and you don't have third party support because it's doing bad, it's an unsolvable problem. It has to start strong, or at least decent. Alas, the Wii U did not.
We could see it as soon as April if Nintendo unveils it early next year.
What makes me scared is that the policies that lead to the Wii U's failure everyone blamed on Iwata seem actually be Miyamoto's influence. Which is concerning, because he has more power at Nintendo than ever now.
