Hey guys, i just recently noticed that the left side of my Y button has a weird discoloration to it. i havnt had the system for long and its only on one side so im not even sure if its your average run of the mill yellowing that happens usually later on in a systems life. I have tried putting all purpose cleaner on it and i cant seem to get it off. does anyone have any suggestions to how i can get this weird stain off of the button. its really bugging me. thanks again

@OP the yellowing is due to the plastics that Nintendo use.
The discolouration happens if you leave your controllers under or near strong sources of light, sun light is the worst and speeds up the process rather quickly.
The best way to prevent any further yellowing is to put your controllers into a drawer after use.
Unfortunately, there's nothing that can change the colour back once the yellowing has begun, but it won't get any worse if you take steps to prevent it.

Does Nintendo still use that type of plastic? I mean, I haven't seen white plastics go yellow in a loong time. Last time I seen it was in old keyboards and mice, but nothing yellowing in maybe the last decade. You'd think Nintendo wouldn't use the same type of plastic as the NES/SNES that caused yellowing, advances in plastics considered.

I've got the white Wii, hopefully I won't see that happen. I'm gonna keep optimistic and think it won't.

Edit; I don't know that much about plastics, so maybe white plastics today will still yellow. I just figured there would have been a solution for that in the industry already.

The only Nintendo system I've ever seen yellow personally is a Super Nintendo and they were notorious for that. I'm assuming the most likely scenario is that you are leaving it next to a bright light source. You don't even have to put it in a drawer, just don't set it right next to the lamp or whatever you're doing.

Depending on the color of your system, or you could make it a whole new color~! O:

People would always say the same thing about the Super Nintendo, but my family never drank coffee or smoked cigarettes and our snes still yellowed.

Yeah, but when nobody is around then the SNES picked up some bad habits... I suggest nico patches and a water diet for your system

Every one in my house smoked when I had my xbox 360. I would smoke directly in front of it. My controllers and console never yellowed. Owned it for 2 years also, (to end the smoke myth)

I would go for the sunlight. it has a nasty way with plastics of all sorts and fishtanks.

Also so glad the g/f wants the black wii u now

Alright everyone I'm here to help, calm down.

I doubt that the yellowing in your controller button is due to the ultraviolet light that will deteriorate the plastic coloring of a SNES because as some have said, I'm pretty sure that Nintendo isn't using that type of plastic anymore. The technology of plastics have come a long way since the 80's and 90's.

HOWEVER, this is the miracle cure to reverse yellowing in retro plastics. I make it a hobby of mine, restoring vintage electronics and this wonderful group of people made this information open source for the world to use... http://retr0bright.wikispaces.com/

It's a chemical solution called Retr0bright and it reverses the effects of ultraviolet oxidation in flame retardant plastics like the casing on the SNES. Again, I'm not sure your button got yellowed by means of light, because this effect takes years to happen, but if that IS the case, and you have cleaned it, scrubbed it, disassembled it and left it soaking in a cleaning solution then I must say Retr0bright is your last solution.

I'm also posting this for the education of anyone who wants to cure their SNES.
