It didn't stop Wii from selling, so I thought the whole name thing was moot by now.

That's because "Wii" carried no connotations with it the first time around. The system had buzz simply by the weird name. Add in the funky motion controls and people who never played videogames were suddenly intrigued. The second time around the "Wii" part carries the connotation of shovel ware and weird controls, and absolutely NO buzz because EVERYONE has or had one.

If the "casuals" don't want shovelware anymore, then I guess they aren't "casuals" anymore, eh? People were releasing shovelware, because it was selling, and alot of the games weren't even shovelware.

If the mindset is that "casuals" and "shovelware" are part of the same thing, then they wouldn't be playing games on iPhone, either.

When I heard Wii U I felt like the name must have come from Japan because only they would think a name that stupid would sound good. It's like in anime when they make things sound awesome, powerful or magical by saying them in english. Even worse is bleach that uses the most simplest phrases but they sound cool cuz they're in spanish, and the spanish speaking people be like =_=
What's worse is the fact that when they did reveal it all they showed was the controller of course people would think it's an accessory.
Wii motion plus
Wii balance board
Wii Zapper gun
Wii U
They could have at least used Super Wii or Wii 2. I mean they wanted the casuals-the people who don't play videogames and who don't follow the industry like we do. It's not like they're going to watch Nintendo's every move.

What about it? That was a free shovelware game. The most it would sell for is $1 on Wii U, and people would be expecting $1 more of quality.

Maybe they would have done better just going with "U". It sort of makes sense to go from We to You.

I agree that Wii as a brand was not something that was going to help because gamers and casuals had both moved on and had negative associations with it. This is a failure of Nintendos market research.

It makes sense to keep the Wii name because it is backwards compatible and supports wii accessories but I think it would have been clearer to people if they called it "Wii HD" because even the casuals know their old Wii didn't do high defitinition so at least they would have understood. They probably would have done well to have Wii mode to include some uprez to make Wii games look better as well.

They didn't seem to have this problem with DS and 3DS even though it had the same potential. I guess the DS brand still had a more positive image though.

i'm a causual gamer and i think it's a great system. i think there are a lot of people out there like me that would enjoy the wii u, but they just don't know about it. i was an early adopter only bc i thought my step son was getting one in 2012 for Christmas, but instead he just got a wii. I was sp disappointed that i went out and got one a few months later.

this has been awesome for the family and i put even more time on the system with the gamepad and netflix.

i'm casual compared to a lot of folks on this board. probably a notch up from casual, by very definition of posting here and the number of games i own. However, tho i love donkey kong and mario, i've never finished either one on any system. i only play about an hour a day, if that. tho i delve into other games that are more intense, i like games that you can just pick up and play and not put much thought or effort, like mk8, mario golf, wii sports club etc. besides the wii u and 3ds, i have only owned a gba and a snes since 1992.
