The Monster World type games like Dynastic Hero/Wonderboy in Monster World, Dragon's Curse and Monster World IV have been some of my long-standing favorites on Virtual Console. Are there more games like these that I may have missed? I've also played Super Adventure Island II, which is also good, and very similar to the Monster World gameplay style.
So, games that are basically openworld 2D sidescroller action adventures?
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (MS)
Wonder Boy in Monster World (MD)
Zelda II (NES)
Faxanadu (NES)
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES)
Metroid (NES)
Super Metroid (SNES)
Robox (WiiWare)
Blaster Master Overdrive (WiiWare)

Basically, although I'm also looking for a some RPG elements like the Monster World games have. I've played most of that list, of course, though Blaster Master Overdrive is one I haven't got yet. Dragon's Trap is also the same game as Dragon's Curse, but the Turbografx version is supposed to be better.
Was the WiiWare version ever actually released outside Japan, after it was perpetually delayed?
(then again, it may not have been as good after losing the MSX aesthetics and changes to avoid copyright issues)
La-Mulana for WiiWare was released in Europe and North America in September 2012. It's a pretty fantastic version, but it's missing the DLC of the Japanese original (Hell Temple, Time Attack).
Oh yeah, I guess Ufouria was one as well but I never took the plunge, should I?
The two WiiWare games LostWinds and LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias would fit the description as well. They're beautiful and original, but rather short.
Thinking about games that would fit the description in one or two cases, I could probably add Wonder Boy in Monster Land and Monster World IV. They're not openworld as you can't go back to earlier areas, but other than that they play pretty much like the other Wonder Boy adventures: defeating monsters, collecting coins, finding chests, buying items, weapons, equipment, etc.
Adventure Island: The Beginning (WiiWare) is more of a platformer than adventure, is stagebased instead openworld, but has the collecting/buying/enhancing your character/go back to earlier areas and find new secrets intact.
Anima: Ark of Sinners (WiiWare) is an openworld sidescroller/adventure with a good story and a few puzzles. It's focused on combat though, with no rpg elements/upgrades and no items at all.
The Battle of Olympus (NES&GB) was also a good one. It was much like Faxanadu. I wonder why this was never released on any VC.
Here's the updated list:
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (MS) / Dragon's Curse (TG)
Wonder Boy in Monster World (MD) / The Dynastic Hero (TG)
Wonder Boy in Monster Land (MS) / Wonder Boy in Monster Land (VCA) NOW
Monster World IV (MD) NOW
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES)
Faxanadu (NES)
Kid Icarus (NES) NOW
Metroid (NES)
Ufouria (NES)
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES)
Super Adventure Island II (SNES)
Super Metroid (SNES)
La-Mulana (WiiWare)
Robox (WiiWare)
Cave Story (WiiWare)
LostWinds (WiiWare)
LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias (WiiWare)
Blaster Master Overdrive (WiiWare)
Adventure Island: The Beginning (WiiWare) NOW
NOW = No Open World, but enough sidescrolling/adventure/rpg elements.
Yes, I think U-Four-Ia is a wonderful game. I enjoyed it very much. It's from the same developers who made Blaster Master (Sunsoft). But it's not nearly as hard as the original Blaster Master Master for the NES.
And I agree that Monster World IV and Lost Winds should both definitely go on that list.
