I mean the gameplay and graphics are awesome! Mario 64 is God but the simple side scroller mechanic I think is better.

@Maurino892017
I don't think Super Mario World SNES was the Best of all.
Yes, indeed. It was one of Best 2D Mario games, but there are some other Mario games that better than Super Mario World SNES.
For me, my Best impression so far is Super Mario Odyssey. I have Less interest with 3D Land and 3D World. Both of them are Good games, but really Decent quality in my opinion.

I honestly find SMB3 better then World. Yeah World had better graphics and such but I liked the variety of suits that SMB3 had plus the level designs just felt better. For me it just didn't feel a huge step.forward like SMB3 did.

It regularly tops "best Mario game ever" lists, so you're obviously not alone. Personally though, I think Lost Levels was the best one!

For his 2D installments, I wholeheartedly agree. Never‘ve been much of a SMB fan, though. You can very well blame the NSMB subseries and the subsequent 'NSMB-ification' of the entire franchise (particularly the two rpg series as well as 3D Land and 3D World) for tainting my opinion of 2D Mario so negatively. Plus, 2D Mario simply has never been MY Mario considering I grew up playing Mario 64 and Sunshine. So for me, the best 3D Mario, and therefore best Mario as a whole, is Odyssey by a LOOOOOOOOONG mile.

I do.

@Euler Lol a lot of people consider Lost Levels a mistake

Euler

@JayJ I would agree that at the time, it probably wasn't the right game to be the NES follow-up to Super Mario Bros. That doesn't change the fact that it's a great game and an underrated masterpiece.

Mario world was amazing at the time. Hidden exits that lead to whole new levels and shortcuts, I don't think I'd seen that in a game before smw. But we gotta agree the game box lied. It says 96 levels. It's more like 96 exits to levels

JayJ

@Euler I think that only depends upon how hardcore you are. It's by far the most challenging Mario game for better or worse.

JayJ

Euler

@JayJ Well, I come at it as someone that loves Mario games and wants a good challenge. I just find it ironic that everyone whines about how easy NSMB games are, but they then say they don't like Lost Levels because of its difficulty.

Euler

JayJ

@Euler Different strokes. The Lost Levels is one of those hardcore NES challenges like Ghosts n Goblins. It takes a very particular kind of gamer to appreciate that kind of challenge.

JayJ

Euler

@JayJ I haven't personally played Ghosts 'n Goblins (I'll wait until the NES Classic Edition becomes available) so I can't comment much on it. But from what I've read, it suffers from "fake difficulty". Rather than a fair, well-designed challenge its difficulty comes primarily from RNG enemy spam and bad controls.

@Euler Yeah if you have ever watched AVGN the guy goes into a lot of detail about how cheap it is.

SMB3 having no battery save was a big turn off for me. There were never enough lives or enough time to complete the game 100% in a single session.

I liked SMW's approach much better. You could take all the time in the world, you could power off the console and later continue from where you left off. You could play the same game for months until you've completed everything 100%. Starting from scratch was a relic from the past.

I know it's just a QoL update and not much new in the gameplay department compared to SMB3, but for me it was a game changer. It was like a first form of recordable achievement system. "Look here! I've got all 96 exits!" From then on I only bought games with battery save.

@JayJ Saw the video, it was pretty funny. He seems to touch on the same points - the difficulty comes mainly from broken mechanics and cheap RNG. Not the case with any main-series Mario game (including Lost Levels), with the obvious exception of certain troll levels in Mario Maker.

Euler

JayJ

@Euler Yeah it has a cryptic approach that you don't really see in games anymore. The Lost Levels definitely had a few of these moments, but they were a bit more obvious.

Tasuki

@SKTTR Yeah that was one down side to SMB3 on the NES. That's why now if I play SMB3 it has to be the All-Star version with the save feature or on VC or the NES Mini with save states.

Super Mario World is definitely one of the best Super Mario games and one of the best video games of all time. At the end of the day it is hard to say which one is the best Super Mario title but it is a candidate.
