The SNES won out because of its better lineup: Mario, DKC, Zelda, etc. All were great games that everyone was familiar with from the NES days, whereas Sega kept trying to create new games without expanding upon most of them (except, of course, for Sonic; Ecco had two sequels on the Genesis). Selling what works is better than trying to be original all the time.
Also, the Super FX was smarter than the 32X in that the Super FX was simply a chip embedded in select SNES games while 32X required an attachment. Nintendo was wise in that it saved trouble and money.
Nintendo didn't go into the compact disc scene until 2001, which is probably a good thing. No backward compatibility, but no worries about scratching and breaking.
i completely agree there should of been a squeal to enduro racer
It wasn't just the 32X, Sega in general was blatantly clueless when it came to making kickass chip on a cart tech. They had this absolutely amazing port of Virtua Racing on the Genesis that used this SVP chip. The damn thing was so expensive the game if I remember right when it hit the market ended up costing in the USA $80 or $100 (I forget which.) Needless to say, it didn't sell fantastic and that was the end of that chips use, and a few years later you could order the game new from SegaParts.com for $19.99 (which I did.)

@StarBoy91: DoReMi Fantasy is another great choice. The animations are some of the smoothest I've ever seen on the the SNES.
Check out my Classic Video Game blog: The Time Traveling Gamers Currently Playing: Super Metroid,Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, DoReMi Fantasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure, Super Mario Sunshine, and Bit.Trip Runner.
@Poochy - DoReMi Fantasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure also has some of the most atmospheric and ambient music I've heard from a platformer and it has the most responsive play control I've ever experienced in a platformer yet, and it is my number one favorite game from the genre. Shame it never hit the US the first time around. Still, I love how soft the colors are for the eyes.
@StarBoy91: I'm actually playing through it right now and am thoroughly enjoying my experience. Definitely some great music and extremely solid controls.

This isn't so much from best use of color and detailing, but from an artistic standpoint I think Earthbound deserves some kind of a nod. Between the hand drawn outlined cartoon look of everything to those trippy psychedelic backgrounds you get when fighting I think are nicely memorable as a unique stand out.
