I still have my old Super Mario All-Stars. There's some dudes selling them for 30$ each on some website here in my country. I wonder how much I can sell mine for. I do remember ALttP going for 25$ though.

Amazon is good for some retro titles, many of which sell for pennies (plus shipping & handling). Good NES games on the other hand usually cost more than their Virtual Console versions, which sucks if you don't have a Wii. Funny it costs more to buy a cartridge for a decades old system with a 95% failure rate than to download a digital copy that is guaranteed to work.

95% failure rate? if you clean them there is a 100% work rate

And yes, he is (usually) always right, and he is (almost) the sexiest gamer out there (not counting me) ;)

For one its because of the collector value behind it and if you are carefull enough there isnt a failure rate at least I have never had one fail on me. Also with a digital copy you are at the companies mercy you bought it from they can pull it at any time without warning as Nintendo has down with several titles. The cartridge is yours for good that is if you take good care of it.

I wouldn't say 100%, but still pretty close. My friend bought a copy of Street Fighter 2010 that we both tried cleaning several times with no luck. Opened the cart, no obvious signs of damage. Tried it on a toploader and Famicom w/converter (both lack the lockout chip, so better success rate), no sign of life, not even a single glitched screen. (he uses steel wool, says it's worked on several of his games though I haven't used it.)
(though I bought a lot for a gift that included a second copy of Code Name: Viper that seemed dead, but I think that might have worked after several rounds of Windex and Q-tips. Also didn't seem to have any damage comparing the PCB to that of my own working copy.)
But that's only two of the hundreds of games I've bought.

if you still have a way of playing that same cart, try a scouring pad and contact cleaner, im curious to see if it works.
thats the shortcut method. after i use that, i hit the contacts again with 91% alcohol in q tips.

Also I forgot to mention this on my last post but I did just buy a complete NES and a copy of True Lies for the SNES from my local Goodwill and both worked fine the first time tried them out.

I just got into thrift shopping for video games recently to build up my collection.
So far this year I have found:
Resident Evil 4 - PS2 - $0.69
A bunch of garbage PS2 Sports games for $5
Front Mission 4 - PS2 - $0.69
Harvest Moon: Magical Melody - Gamecube - $0.69 (Crazy right!?)
Mario Mix Dance Revolution - Gamecube - $0.69
God of War - PS2 - $1.50
PSP with 9 sports games - $14
Nintendo Wii Nunchuck - $2
Hyrule Warriors - Wii U - $0.69
Minecraft - Xbox 360 - $0.69
Grand Theft Auto Mission Pack #1 London 1969 - PS1 - $0.50
Rampage World Tour - PS1 - $0.50
Final Fantasy 8 - PS1 COMPLETE - $0.50 (CRAZY!)
The Orange Box - Xbox 360 - $0.69
Legend of Legaia - PS1 - $0.50 (IM NOT LYING!)
Star Wars Battlefront - Xbox - $1
Tekken 3 - PS1 - $0.50
Front Mission 3 - PS1 - $0.50
Burnout Legends - PSP - $1
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater - PS1 - $0.50
Crusaders of Night and Magic - PS1 - $0.50

I couldn't believe the PS1 finds! I also picked up a ton of garbage Wii games but hey for $0.69 - $1 per game, you can't go wrong. At my local thrift store named "Dorcas" They placed all the PS1 games in the Music CD rack so you never know. I don't know how they thought it was music but hey no complaints from me!

Remember, video game hunting is a HUNT. You can't expect to find anything. I've went countless times and not found a thing. Patience is key. But it's fun anyway!

The only complaint I have is people who come in and rush around with their little scanners. They scan every item without knowing what it is so that they can resell it. That ruins some of the fun.

@ReaderRagfish You got a point. Resellers ruin everything. Especially if they don't even know anything about video games and do it solely for the profit.

A couple of years ago, I found a copy of Suikoden 2 for PS1 at a thrift store in Sweden for 5 SEK, that is less than $1. It didn’t have the manual, but it was still one hell of a bargain.
