Surprisingly, the best NES game is Bubble Bobble. A very good port, and I´ve had so many great co-op hours with it.

Recently had some young cousins over and we were playing Wii together. I showed them how to play Bubble Bobble thinking that they would love the game as much as I do... no dice. The didn't fight for item drops or high scores, they didn't like how power ups randomly appeared, they didn't really get a handle on the controls. The whole experience was a miss for them.
I had the exact opposite experience with young cousins. They were so excited that I had a Wii, and after letting them play Sports, I got them to play SMB3 on VC. I just watched, didn't help. Expected them to want to play Sports again shortly thereafter, but they kept playing well after I felt like kicking them out so I could go to bed, haha.
