Three games I loved that rarely get mentioned are Metal Storm, GemFire, and Nightshade. There are so many other great games on NES though... don't believe the lists that only stick to major franchises and/or first-party titles, the console had much more to offer than that.

A B-Wings fan? Cool! I´ve only played it on pirate cart since it never was released in Sweden. I like the gazillion of power ups, "hammer" is my favourite. Too bad it´s a bit repetative. Good music though!
Duck Tales was awesome, so was Rescue Rangers and Tiny Toons. It's almost surprising how many good licensed games there where on the NES considering the bad rap those types of games have gotten over the years. Of course, for every good one there where two Dick Tracy's but what're ya' gonna do.
Though it's not my personal favorite my opinion would be that Mario 3 was the best NES game, can't say I'd have changed a thing about it and unlike a lot of NES games it's aged really well. My personal favorite is probably Dragon Quest IV.
