Topic: My Problems with Nintendo going back to the NES days.

In a few posts I mentioned I'm not a Nintendo Fan. As a company I hate Nintendo. As a Games maker I enjoy their games up to a point.F-Zero X and Mario Kart 64 are two of my all time Favorite games. Few kart racers save for Sonic All Star Racing (and it's transformed follow up) and Little Big Planet Karting can hold a candle to Mario Kart Anybody wanting to study level design should play Mario 3 and Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island has Aged well. Link to the Past was awesome sauce back in the day and still is now. Unlike alot of American kids in the late 80s and early 90s the NES was not my first Console. The Sega Master System was. I did eventually get an NES and like many The NES is still beloved to me. I got an SNES Then skipped the 32 bit Era to be a depressed sad teenager who needed to find his way. Finally my modern gaming began with the Dreamcast. So that takes us full circle.

So here are the issues I have with Nintendo going all the way back to those golden 8-bit days.

  • Want to make games for the NES, ok YOU ONLY MAKE GAMES FOR THE NES. Perhaps the beginning of Nintendo's Poor 3rd Party relationship. Eventually the Master System would find some equal footing with the NES..IN BRAZIL AND EUROPE. But in the states due to this the Master System never stood a Chance.
  • Litigation Nintendo has always been quick to hide behind Lawyers. They claim ownership of Let's Plays, They try to shut down a Charity Melee Tournament at EVO. They sued over the Game Genie. They've sued Atari, They've sued everyone at somepoint it seems and for what? Tighter control because everything has to be done THE NINTENDO WAY. OUR WAY OR GTFO. Tetris on the NES is a prime example. The unlicensed far superior version SHUT DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN.

*NES AND SNES Censorship. It's not a huge deal but it always irked me plus they were rather PROUD of that squeeky clean image they had. Gamers were growing up. Sega knew this, Nintendo did not. Thankfully Nintendo for once did learn. This was mostly a US Thing though.

  • Unwillingness to get with the times. Indurty Trend, Disc Media, LETS USE LIMITING CARTS Online? Ok we will have online but EVERY GAME MUST HAVE AN ID NUMBER nobody could possibly remember. HD? What's that? Lets just add motion controls to the Gamecube and release a new system. UH OH HD...FINE lets make a current Gen System, when Next gen is right around the corner. Region Locking? yeah lets not only keep that Lets bring it to a platform that thrives on being carried everywhere, Portables! When people ask why we'll just say Online Features and parental controls because Gamers are stupid unlike us we're Smart We're F-ING NINTENDO.

No really Region locking needs to Go and Nintendo is being Super Stubborn about it. Sony realized Region Locking was a bad idea and the PSP was region free. The XBOX 360 was Semi Region free. The DS was the last Region Free Handheld Before Nintendo again because OUR WAY OR GTFO the DSi was the first Portable EVER to be region locked.

*The SAME games over and over. Mario Galaxy was the last unique Mario Game everything since has been the Status quo There's only so much you can do with the old 2d Mario formula. 3d...same just add a Catsuit. There are things still left to be done with Mario. Time Travel and Manipulation would be a great idea. Besides that Nintendo seems bent on, Casual game like Wii Fit and Nintendogs, Mario, Mario again, Eh better throw in a Zelda, Eh ok Kirby, OH OH yeah Samus gotta have a Metroid Too edgy for us but ok Metroid. I can't think of anyone that doesn't want a New F-Zero what does Miyamoto do? Say NO F-ZERO BECUASE I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE ONE.. So ship it back off to Sega Have the people that used to do Wipeout make it. YEESH. When Nintendo does make a non status quo game they hardly promote it apprently there are tons of Downloadable first party games I have no idea exist because nobody bothers to promote them.

*Virtual Console Pricing NES games are what $5 US? I could hope on to PSN and for just $1 more get full PSX games Plus I might beable to get the cart of said game cheaper than it is on VC. Fair pricing might be $2 maybe $3 for NES games After $5-10 for SNES.

I think that's most of it. I also feel Nintendo doesn't really listen to it's fans Eventually Kids grow up or casuals will move on to something else and all you have left are your core fans and Hardcore gamers. You can appeal to your core fans but the Loyal Hardcore gamer that moved on what are you doing to lure them back?

Another small nitpick, The Wii U pad while comfortable, is just way WAY too big. If it was Vita sized, it would be alot more practical.

So there's my beef with Nintendo. I doubt anyone will convert me back to Nintendo land (which does look fun) but Hey Old School Nintendo, I'm game I have an N64 I bought Wii U launch day that needs games. I'm always looking for Gamecube games The Retron5 is on the way too....

I'm sure I'll think of more issues I have, and NO the possibility that Nintendo had Gunpei Yakoi Murdered will not come up. EVER
Other than Just now.

AND the first response a U mad Bro... Eh whatever. I know there are a few people willing to discuss Nintendo's shortcomings and Don't think that I think Sony and Microsoft are saints either.

Oh I also gotta add the recent shutting off of Indies to Japanese Developers....UH WHY?

And yes, he is (usually) always right, and he is (almost) the sexiest gamer out there (not counting me) ;)

Clearly you know very little about Nintendo. You say they make the same games over and over, but Xenoblade and Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland seemed quite different from the norm...Also, the liscense thing is called QUALITY CONTROL. It's what saved the gaming industry!

Why am I even trying to reason with a troll?

and they almost did not release Xenoblade in the states, and when they did, VERY SMALL PRINT RUN. Which goes to the point I made about games not in the status quo not being Promoted.

The bottom line is Nintendo always has room to learn, alongside showing others how things are done. That goes for any game company.

Sin and Punishment 2 was pretty original...

Very true and if the fans of Nintendo don't discuss Nintendo's short comings how will Nintendo Learn? Nintendo's biggest issue is that they don't respond to fan backlash and that first and foremost needs to change before anything else I addressed that is still relevant to Nintendo now can be done.

Which they DID promote and while Nintendo Owns the IP. they did not make the game, the Magnificent Treasure did. The first game is why I have an N64

Nintendo is beloved, people love Nintendo but we can't act like Nintendo is the perfect little angel. I don't want Nintendo to not exist. I want them to get better, I want them to Listen to fans. I want them to do something new with their games, not with gimmicks like motion control and an over-sized tablet.

Who here says they are? Nothing is flawless.

I don't want Nintendo to not exist. I want them to get better, I want them to Listen to fans.

Fan service is garbage, in almost every case.

I want them to do something new with their games, not with gimmicks like motion control and an over-sized tablet.

Yes, because everything unique Nintendo brings to the table that you don't like is a gimmick. Shame on them for being creative.

I disagree.

Just because they're different doesn't mean they're creative. Their games still use the same old formula and the only time they use these "creative" new things they implement, they just use them as gimmicks.

There's a lot of games out there they could have done a LOT with using the features, what did they do instead? Nintendogs and Wii Fit.

EDIT: I edited this to tidy it up a little

Obviously not perfect quality control, but it's better than what happened to Atari systems!

Atari paved the way for gaming today. Nintendo didn't.
