I'm going to try. Not only do I want to get one before any scalpers buy them all up, I want to get one because Ness is my main in Smash (Although currently outclassed by other characters) and I'm a huge EB fan, so I intended to buy his amiibo from the start.
EarthBound is my all-time favorite game, never to be topped in a million years. I actually hated it the first time I played in 1996 but the more I put into it the more I loved it. By the time I finished it I was in love with it and it just resonated with me very closely.
Waiting for EarthBound 64/Mother 3 was the most excruciating thing I've ever endured as a gamer. It was in development for a few years after the N64 came out then it was cancelled out of nowhere. I was very upset. Then years of waiting and lost hope that we would ever see another EarthBound or a rerelease. Japan got Mother 1+2 but we didn't as I was upset. But then finally they made Mother 3 on GBA and it looked even better than EB64 did. Unfortunately we never got it locally. But I imported it and played it entirely in Japanese (only game I've ever done that with) and with a little help I was able to work my way through it and it was fantastic.
Even though we have a fan translation of Mother 3 I just really hope we can one day see an official localized version, preferrably in an EarthBound Trilogy release on 3DS or NX.
I can see Earthbound getting a massive resurgence with NX/mobile. Nintendo needs to increase the brands it has that resonate with Americans and Earthbound could be the leading IP for that and if handled well could be a system seller. Earthbound may not have been a massive success at launch in the states but its reputation has grown with time and as a brand it seems it would be extremely marketable with its mixture of humour and strategy and its interpretation of America could make it something gamers young and old can identify with a game about being a regular American going on an adventure.
I can see there being four key events in the future to bring Earthbound back.
1. The release this Christmas of Mother 3 on WiiU and 3DS to remind loyal Nintendo gamers of the brand and satisfying a lot of avid fans.
2. An Earthbound game developed for mobile. A game that can entice gamers who don't own Nintendo hardware to experience the IP. Nintendo can develop the characters and give mobile gamers a chance to experience the world of Earthbound while not having to commit to a full RPG. What genre?? Maybe something similar to puzzle and dragons there's a lot of possibilities but if this is going to be a brand that goes big it needs to start somewhere small and build up a fan base amongst younger gamers.
3. The use of Earthbound characters heavily in other Nintendo games. As an example if Mario Kart was a launch title for NX (possible but not to likely) than include Ness and another character on the roster. Further to this use the IP heavily in all Nintendo marketing make a big deal about these guys make sure everyone knows who they are.
4. A fully 3D NX exclusive game. Make the earthbound game we are all dreaming off give it a beautiful look solid mechanics and make it appeal to younger newer gamers and old hands. Don't rush it out for launch but don't leave it to late into the systems life to not make a big difference (imagine if Splatoon had come out much much earlier).
I know the team behind Earthbound have said they would not want to make another and if they can't be persuaded then maybe Retro/Intelligent Systems/Camelot could do a good job.
I played through this trilogy for the first time in 2015. All I can say is, wow. This series needs much more attention. It has been getting some love in Super Smash Bros., though I do not see why they did not include it in the Smashing Soundtrack from Club Nintendo. Every other universe/series got at least one track between the two CDs. Magicant or Pollyanna would have been a safe bet.
