I know there's the Steam deals thread, but I think a separate one will help bring this to more people's attention.
So yeah, in celebration of Steam hitting Mac OS X, Valve has made Portal free for everyone until May 24. That's a total cost of zero simoleans, PC and Mac.
@Roopa132: I believe it's a forever type deal, just as if you were to purchase it. I think that, because it says "Act now before May 24th to get your free copy of portal!" But, just an educated guess, no guarantees....
Oh but does "free until May 24" mean I can download it for free and play forever or does it mean I can download and play it for free until May 24 and then I have to purchase it when I want to keep playing?
I think get it for free until May 24, and you'll still own it afterwards. Not that it really matters, since it's a 2-hour game.
What. WHAT. I now HAVE to download Steam. Unless it's just for pre-existing members? I dunno how Steam works, I only recently got a laptop whose specs can be described as better than "Stone Age" like my old one.

Whilst I finally have a decent computer, I don't know if my download limits/speed will allow it. Does anyone know the filesize? If it's over a couple of Gb's, it'll take a decade to download and then BT will charge me for the download limit breach T_T

Portal is 5054 mb, so it's hefty. What you could do is "buy" it and download it incrementally as downloads and installs can be paused and resumed again at any time.
Yeah, but I don't fancy spending 2-3 months to download one game and having to be really careful with my internet usage in between that. I guess I'll keep a look out for a second-hand copy of Orange Box in Game or something.
@Raylax: Or, you could download it or have the "license registered' and cancel/pause the download just so you have it on steam for free for the remainder of your life.

That's exactly the same as Panda said So, I refer you to my previous comment.

What he means is, you start downloading and then put it on hold till you get a faster internet connection.
