Didn't the Persona series start as a more relaxed, less hardcore alternative to Shin Megami Tensei?
Yeah but it evolved into it's own thing. They even stated that Persona is no longer part of the SMT series and the proof of that is Persona 4 Golden which no longer has SMT in the name same for Persona Q.

I recently got my hands on a limited edition of Persona 3 (original), with just the artbook, sadly, only to be reminded by my good friend that there may have been a few Persona games on the PSP.
After a little bit of digging around, I found out that there is a version of Persona 3 on the PSP, yet the opinions I've read on it seem somewhat mixed.

What do you guys think? Is P3P a good game?
P3P is definitely the definitive version of the game. It lacks FES's epilogue chapter, but more than makes up for it with new features and overall polish.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
@GuardianKing No, definitely not. The perspective is awkward, the visuals are sloppy, the female MC options has comparably less freedom than the male one - and they had to remove ALL ANIMÉ CUTSCENES!
In all honesty, don't get it. You're not missing out on anything there.
@CaviarMeths I keep hearing that the lack of an overworld and the still cutscenes ruin the tension and detail from the console games. Is that true? I mean, I was fine with DeSuO/DeSu2's "map" overworld, but still...

In my opinion, P3P is only the second-to-best version of P3. I would get FES if you want a better version of the original P3.
@Squid I'm more concerned about portability, since I don't get that much time to sit down in front of my PS2 (and the PSP is portable enough to bring with me everywhere). Trouble is, I kind of don't want to sacrifice quality for portability.
P3P is most certainly the best version of the game. If you want to play the extra chapters in FES, you can start from the epilogue and never play through the main game, but I think you're much better off YouTubing it, personally. P3P has the best battle gameplay by far (You can control all the characters), and a whole new character to offer a different take on the game. The viewpoint in P3P does not ruin the game or break from the immersion in the slightest, and makes the game extremely streamlined. The only thing better about the console versions is the anime cutscenes.
Persona 4 (Golden) is the best!
Coming from a person who's not into anime, high school drama or life sims and never played any SMT in his games before P4G, i still think it's one of the best games ever.

Get P3P.
I highly disagree. IMO, P3P is only really good for a second playthrough. I played P3P after I had forgotten what happened in FES, only to go back to FES after a few hours because the atmosphere was completely ruined by everything being described in text. For instance, the beginning was supposed to be surreal, and that just didn't come across very well just from a still image of a subway and some dry text.
Yeah, there have been many debates among fans what exactly defines Persona 3, and what of it is in P3P. Some see it as the definite version, while others think of it as a mediocre port with a lack of atmosphere. And those like you who don't know which version to decide for won't get a clear answer - that's the sad part.
To be fair, you might as well just try to look up gameplay for both FES and P3P, and decide which one you'd enjoy more. It really is a fantastic game that shouldn't be missed either way.
Persona 3 Portable would be my choice. Although the anime cutscenes in the original release are gorgeous and you cannot walk around and explore in the PSP version, I feel that it is such a good game that when you are sucked into the story it doesn't seem to matter. A lot of the changes such as using a cursor and menus to travel around are compromises because of hardware limitations, but at the same time they streamline things.
The reason I prefer P3P is the ability to control all of your characters in battle. I also really liked the different perspective the female protagonist provided. The main story is identical when playing as a female but many of the social links and dialogue are different and there are some additional sequences that provide little links to Persona 4. If you choose the male protagonist the content is the same as the PS2 release. P3P doesn't contain the FES epilogue.
Persona 4 is definitely the best one to get into these types of games. And then there's Persona 5 coming sometime this year which is undoubtedly going to be awesome as well.
I guess I'll just throw my opinion out there that I've always seen the ability to control the other party members in P3P/onward a very unimportant improvement to the gameplay.
To me it just seems like a way to make the battles easier, nothing wrong with that, but P3/FES is not that hard and if you know what you're doing you have enough Tactics options at your disposal to guide the party members.
I still say P3P is a downgrade but @GuardianKing if you're still looking for an answer and if portability is a big factor for you then I'd go with P3P. However, you will lose some content with P3P so it's up to you wether that counts as sacrificing quality for portability.
So, I got P3P, and you know what? I think it's actually pretty good. Granted, I lose some of the immersion, but I've gotten used to this kind of "visual-novel" gameplay (where many scenes are left to the reader's imagination). Overall, I cannot get enough of such a high quality game on this portable system, and so far, I'm okay with the lack of certain things.
I guess I'm on the positive side of the fandom in regards to this game.
