You know, I've been thinking: ever since I played P3P and finished the P4 anime, I've wondering what kind of game the original Persona is like. Of course, I'm talking about the PSP remake and not the original PS1 game, since I heard the latter is expensive and have some annoying issues.
That said, I looked into it a bit, and the game looks a little dated. Nonetheless, I'd be willing to give it a shot, but if still like to hear from all of you first.
It's not dated. Dated means it was ever good in the first place. The dialogue even in the PSP version is stilted. I never made it far enough to say how good the story is, it's probably not bad since the franchise has had good writing since forever, but the dialogue casts doubt on how well that story is presented. The gameplay, especially the combat, is needlessly complicated and unintuitive. Even after a bunch of tutorials, I still don't know thing one about how things work in that game, and the early difficulty is through the roof, though I hear it dives down until the Snow Queen Quest, where it shoots back up to rediculous levels.
@CanisWolfred Okay, now I'm a little confused by your opinion. You say it isn't dated, yet you list a bunch of complaints that were, to my knowledge, major issues in both the original and it's remake. Do you like the game or not?
It isn't dated. These aren't issues because it's old, these are issues period. They'd be problems in any game. I'm just saying, it's not dated, it's bad, and it was never "good". It's the only SMT game I've ever had to say that about thus far, too.
Well, I was able to acquire Persona 1 through.... Means.... And I have to say:
The game itself isn't too bad, but it's obvious this is no walk in the park. I've played so many RPGs now, which is why some of this game' spacing and encounter rate/battle system don't bother me as much.
That said, anyone getting into Persona really should jump straight to 3&4, as they're a bit more user-friendly.
Would I have paid the full 20$ on PSN myself? Eh, I wouldn't be mad if I mad, but I wouldn't be entirely pleased either. Persona 1 is a decent game whose age is really starting to show. It's in no way "awful" nor is it that "bad".
I'll admit, "Bad" is relative. "Average" for a Persona game is really freakin' good for any other RPG. It's such a high-quality series that a sub-par game sticks out like a sore thumb. Plus I'm assuming you haven't played the entire game yet. The Snow Queen Quest is so bad I'm starting to think it was left out of the English PSOne version as a mercy to us all...
@CanisWolfred It was, actually; most places I look for info on Revelations: Persona speak of the developers removing the Snow Queen side-story because it was far too difficult to be enjoyed by western audiences.
@GuardianKing You play any of the Persona 2 games? If not, you should totally get Innocent Sin PSP (PS1 version wasn't localized for reasons( and "acquire" a copy PSP!Eternal Punishment with an English patch) the PSP version of Eternal Punishment wasn't released in America due Sony's weird remake policy, though there is always the PS1 version which we did get.). Eternal Punishment is a sequel to IS, and contains spoilers for the first game, so be sure to play in the correct order.
I wonder what the Midnight Channel/Dark Hour/JOKER phone calls of Persona 5 will be. Since escapism seems to become a big theme, video games/internet seem very possible.

Saw your post and your avatar, and couldn't help thinking how awesome a pony version of Persona 4 would be..... imagine shadow Pinkie Pie
Persona 4 was my entry point into this series as well. Definitely got some good information out of this thread, I'll have to check out some of the older games at some point. I still need to try Persona 3 at some point.
