I see. It's probably time for me to throw mine out, now that you mention it. I've been using it since a month after the Wii U came out, and it's kinda worn.

They aren't irrelevant by any stretch of the imagination but they have no place in my life at the moment. I have a PC and Wii U at the mo. I don't think PCs are always better for 3rd party games so I mainly use my PC for PC exclusives. There are a few multiplatform games every generation that look amazing on PC but so many are just crisper, glitchier versions of the console equivalents. Here are my main reasons for holding off:

1. They are way behind my PC's power and my PC is not especially powerful.
2. Neither of them have delivered anything remarkable yet and don't look like they plan to. Parkour, particle effects and mechs seem like the closest thing to innovation that 'next gen' devs have come up with.
3. I owned all 3 consoles last gen and loved the early years of 360 but never enjoyed a single PS3 game as much as reviews told me I should (a recurring theme for me since the PS2).
4. Every media or fanboy attack on Nintendo in the last 18 months has carefully ignored the fact that Sony and MS are toying with some really shady business practices at the moment such as their attempts to put £100 micro-transactions into £60 games or making backwards compatibility a chargeable online-only affair. Charging for online might make for a better service (which is debatable) but I think it is just Sony and MS knowing they can get away with it.
5. Their new consoles work like fan heaters so I don't really want to be sweating in my room playing this summer.

Are they relevant? No more so than the Wii U, the 3DS. You do the math.
