Topic: Do you consider videogames as a form of art?

I'm a gamer who went to art school, and I don't consider videogames art. The word art has been distorted to mean anything creative nowadays. Art Is painting, sculptures, installation etc. Videogames are entertainment centered around a buisness. They're very different things.

That being said on normal days I'd rather sit down with a game controller than go to an art exhibit.

Except for that fact that artistic elements, such as the paintings you mentioned, or graphical art, can be included in a game. A game's assets can include art! They are often a combination of artistic elements. If games cannot be art in any form, than what you are saying is that art + art =/= art; under any circumstance. What about games created for nothing more than artistic value (although rare, I suppose)? What if one wishes to combine visuals with music to create an interactive piece of art?

Because you're horribly biased?

Who says shooters and racing games can't have unique visual styles?

I was talking about the examples given. also, earlier in my post i did say MOST shooters and racers...

Mess around with Forza's 4 car tuner. its stupidly realistic (too the point i'm not sure what some of the options are) that in its self as a Car junkie is a work of art.

quit being biased.

nice find. i never bothered to look into the bit.trip series that much as i only own runner so it would be kind of hard to do so. seems very interesting...

wow, ok guys "yes i'm being very biased. Because most popular shooters aren't about killing the enemy endlessly, and most racers aren't about racing" (<-- Massive sarcasm quotes for those of you who can't tell what sarcasm is...) MOST

Red Steel two is a game I consider art, and guess what! its first person shooter/swordplay!

While I view Games as entertainment and a form of creative expression there have only been a few instances where I think a game could be considered art. (Flower,Rez, Child of Eden)

doesn't take anything away about the subtext of the game at all.

Well if you're filled with amazment and wonder by explosions and gunfire then yeah I guess that could count.
I get enough of that on cable though.
I doubt anyone ever got misty eyed over a call of duty game.
Unless you were horribly owned by some teenager online.

Have you even seen BF3? You just stand there looking at the beautiful landscape. It is a gorgeous game. Also, who gets "misty-eyed" over paintings?

A game's assets do include art. Companies use artists to help sell their games. They wanna make money and starving artists need to pay the bills. Things like box "art" are little more than advertisements.
that image is very NSFW — TBD
That asset belongs in a museum.

@Wizzrobe Great topic! Sucking up my time but I'm on break, so I don't care.
@Swiket Yup, pretty much. There is so much I could say about the themes and messages in this series, but I'll spare all of your eyes except for this nugget from an interview with the creative director, Alex Neuse:

Alex Neuse wrote:

CommanderVideo has grown into something that represents the hopes and dreams of all of us here at Gaijin Games. Yet at the same time, he is only a man.

There’s something incredibly humbling about that concept. CommanderVideo does all these amazing things in the Bit.Trip games, but at the same time, he is just a regular dude. At the beginning of the series, we always thought of him as a playable character (even in the abstract games like BEAT, CORE, and VOID), but as the series concluded, we realized he was more than a character.

He was the pure representation of an idea. Maybe even an ideal. He gained depth. Players who complete Flux and experience the end of the series will understand what I’m getting at. CommanderVideo became transcendent.

I honestly believe Hideo Kojima to be an artist. He has something to say about the human condition and the futility of war. He expresses his ideas through video games in a way that other forms of art would not be able to do. So yeah, video games have the capacity to express art and they can do it in a pretty unique way too. -Cue jokes about hour long cut scenes...
