The DS is close at 154 million units where as the PS2 is 155 million. Granted, its a handheld and that alone would make it the most dominating but.....darn it, as a lover of the DS, I want it to be the top and it looks like it can be beaten eventually.
The OP is comparing a cheap(er) handheld with a dear(er) home console.
Even if the DS sells one more million out of the blue, I doubt it will be quite as revered as the number of homes that had a PlayStation 2. It still astounds me that the GameCube and Xbox together made up of less than a third of the total sales (of the PS2). It is a colossal achievement that is very, very unlikely to happen again!
Even if it does, we may never know. Most market research groups have stopped tracking its sales.
That's because the PS2 is out of production not sure about the DS. Sales of a system only count for new sales. Once a system is no longer in production they stop tracking the sales.

@Tasuki: DS is still in production, at least in Japan, but even Media Create (which NintendoLife uses for weekly sales charts) stopped tracking DS sales. Not sure why. They still track Wii.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
@Tasuki: Double checked, turns out I'm wrong. It was discontinued worldwide in 2013. That's why it's no longer tracked I guess, but it would have made sense to at least continue to track software and remaining hardware stock.

So then there is your answer @Artwark no the DS will not beat the PS 2 in sales since both are no longer in production. Used sales don't count since the system was already counted as a sale the first time it was sold.
