Personally i want an improved Pro controller with the coloured buttons higher build quality and the ability to use my smart phone or tablet as the map/inventory screen.
I want to see an innovative controller that fosters new game ideas, but that also has enough buttons to allow for simple direct ports from other systems.
If they do go for an old school controller (honestly at that point I don't see a really see a point in them releasing hardware at all), it should be based on the GC controller, not the Pro Controller. IMO, the Pro Controller is pretty uncomfortable and the layout is awkward.

I would like a better Wii Remote. Possibly one that doesn't require a sensor bar. I would like to see a Dual Wand option rather than a Wand and Nunchuck. The Wand would just need to be designed to cover all functionality that a Pro Controller can. Also the GamePad would be supported but not required.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I really did enjoy the WIImote n Nunchuck combo, Red Steel, No more Hero's, Mario Galaxy 1/2, and Call of duty were all great examples of how motion controls can be precise without the need to wave your arms around like a lunatic.
With a little more tuning it could have been similar to mouse and keyboard gaming.
I just think there were too many crappy games not designed to utilise it properly meaning, that was peoples last memory of it unfortunately.
@DjLewe78: Every controller had games that doesn't use it well, even the Xbox 360 controller. The difference with the Wii Remote is the good and bad are such extremes. I like extremes. I like javing super good controls and having bad controls. I feel with a "standard" controller you don't have as big of extremes and so no experience really stands out. I can't remember the last time I played a game with a "standard" controller and thought to myself, "thos feels really natural. Don't get me wrong, I get use to a controller but the Wii Remote just added so mich and I think there is more that can be done, espcially with a dual wand set-up

Very much agreed. I played Uncharted recently, and I wasn't thrilled by the controls, but I got used to them. When I played Tales of Vesperia, I thought it worked pretty okay. But only with games like Skyward Sword or Galaxy do I feel like the controls pull me into the game world.

Well with all that in mind, should Nintendo really improve and bundle the WIIMOTE to make it more precise for certain types of games like shooters and puzzlers and release a souped up Pro pad for other types of game like Football/sports and Acton based games?
Or just get rid?
Its a tough call as i enjoyed using it.

That is why I think, if they made a new motion controller, having it have enough buttons to be similar to the Pro Controller could fix that problem. Developers could make the game work with or without motion controls while not forcing players to own an extra controller. All that is really needed is an analog stick, 4 face buttons (which could also act as a D-Pad), + (Start) and - (Select) Buttons, Trigger and Bumper Button on each Wand, and you have a Dual Wand controller that can act like a Pro controller. Then improve the motion sensing (hopefully get rid of the sensor bar) and I think they could have a pretty awesome controller.
EDIT: I guess the only problem would be telling Players controls. How would you differentiate the Left and Right Wand Buttons, if they are the same?
Maybe a pro pad that you can twist and seperate so you have 2 seperate motion controls similar too the WIImote and Nunchuck.
Oculus has something similar but i dont really know much about it.
@DefHalan I don't think they need the left and right to be the exact same controller. You really only need one to transmit wirelessly. The other could just be a souped up nunchuck.

Well part of the reason to have left and right be the same is that it would offer better precision for the games and it might be easier to market. Having 1 thing you need to buy multiple times rather than multiple things to buy will ease some of the issues with Wii Remotes, Nunchucks, Classic Controllers, Classic Controller Pros, etc.
Also Owning 4 Controllers would work out great. 2-Player for those games that need more Control options or 4-Player for party games that only require each player to have 1 controller. But this is just my idea.
