As far as the 3 sandbox Mario games go, I think it's the best of them. I can see if people want to give the nod to 64 b/c it was the original, but Odyssey is simply WORLDS better than Sunshine.
In terms of where it stands on Switch - I think it's in the top 5 for sure. My only knock on it this regard would be a silly one - games like BOTW, Fire Emblem: 3 Houses, Xenoblade, Animal Crossing, etc. can all provide hundreds of hours of gameplay. SMO would max out short of 100 even if you get all of the moons and go for the unlockables. That is still a ton of content, but if you're just gonna buy a small amount of Switch games it might be worth considering ones that can get you 100s of hours easy.
It’s awesome. I somehow haven’t gone back though for like 2yrs to finish it. It’s cause port after port have came out and I have so many games I wanna play in my collection (around 35-40 games) and for me personally that’s the most I’ve ever held onto.
@rallydefault I also found the controls loose, though I think the game was programmed to allow a corresponding margin of error. I played with split joy cons. Perhaps a Pro Controller would have allowed greater precision.
I think overall it's an excellent game, but I felt that 85 percent of my time was devoted to a scavenger hunt, rather than platforming. I know many people loved that aspect of it, but I much prefer Galaxy's more focused levels. That said, to the original poster, if you've got the money this is a must-own. So many laugh-out-loud moments.
It's same ol' 3D Mario with a prettier coat of paint and doesn't do a whole lot new. The hat thing is new, but it's nothing ground-breaking.
It wasn't that great for me. I got bored with it, because as a couple others pointed out, it's very repetitive and more scavenger hunting than actual platforming (which is what I play Mario for).
@Burning_Spear
Yea, I mostly played handheld. I still go back to it from time to time to get more moons, so I'll try with the pro controller a bit more. I also much prefer the "missions" or whatever you wanna call them from the older 3D games rather than just being plopped into worlds with dozens and dozens of moons, some of which are almost on the scale of the older missions, but many of which are "good job! you threw Cappy at that random bush!"
