Topic: Maybe Switch could be Wii/Wii U retrocompatible if...

I was thinking how Nintendo could help to do Switch retrocompatible and I got an idea.

The first thing for Wii U are the 2 screens. So the Switch must be in portable mode but with a way to make the dock receiving the signal to put it on tv screen.

I was thinking to put a devise in the dock. Conecting it in the dock USB ports. This device must have a disc reader (for Wii and Wii U discs), 4 usb ports (the same that Wii U already have to connect external usb disc and the GC adapter), and a SD card port (for the Wii memory data and the Wii U games that uses SD like Smash 4).

This devise but read the signal from the Switch so it can be used like a gamepad. Also for this work must be an internet update so you can use wiimotes in Switch.

So this is my idea we can get a fully retrocompatible Switch with Wii U games and options (like Wii mode).

I don't think you could ever get something "like Wii mode" on Switch. That kind of comprehensive backwards compatibility is a fundamental property of the hardware. For this accessory to work without emulation errors it would basically need a Wii U inside it, at which point you might as well actually have a Wii U. Sorry, but I don't think Nintendo will be going to the trouble of making something like this work.

I do like the idea of a USB accessory to allow for dual screen play, though. That's nice thinking.

That sounds so bloody convoluted lol.

Wii games should already be compatible via emulation as the Joy-Con can be used to simulate the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The only downside will be that the Joy-Con do not have a speaker, which isn't a dealbreaker, but it will be very annoying if we have to buy a Wii VC-specific Joy-Con that includes a speaker to fulfil that function.

As for Wii U games, I think that Nintendo will figure out a way to reintroduce dual-screen gameplay come next console generation.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

It's already been announced.

I don´t understand why you put a link about Wii U.

Lets ignore the Wii U for a second because that's definitely not happening. They'd need to emulate the games on something that's not much more powerful than the Wii U itself. It's just not going to happen even before you start thinking about the second screen and optical drive. The Wii U games we get on the Switch will be ports. That's the only way to do that.

But Wii and GC? That's a bit trickier. The Switch should be powerful enough to emulate those games fairly well. The controllers shouldn't be an issue because the JoyCon are fairly close to both. Also the Wii/GC controllers would connect to Switch as easily as they did on Wii U. So the main obstacle is the optical drive which on Wii/GC was DVD based aka cheap. I'm sceptical because I think they'd rather sell those games on the eShop than sell you an optical drive. I'm also sceptical because an optical drive would make the Switch very much not portable which is the main appeal of the system.

Basically.... Wii & GC? Possible but I think they'll re-sell you those games on the eShop rather than do BC. Wii U? Not a chance, we're going to get ports of those games.

Technically because of the way "HD Rumble" works you could probably use the rumble on the Switch as a speaker. Especially if you put it on a hard surface. It'd be a bit hit-and-miss depending on how the original game used it but it could work. It'd probably even work better than the WiiMote speaker did for stuff like the road-noise they pushed through the WiiMote speaker in Mario Kart Wii.

We call it sarcasm. Because basically you would be turning the Switch into exactly what the Wii U is.

I do kinda like the idea of seeing some potential add ons to the dock down the road. There's probably a reason the USB 3.0 was added on the inside compartment.
