Also, perhaps something more "crowdpleasing" in general, which given this day and age of continued stress leading to venting over life's personal flaws is damn near impossible...

Here is how i envision the next E3.

The new president comes on stage giving a brief history of Nintendo consoles and a nod to Iwata.
after this he introduces Reggie onto the stage, he says just 3 words " nintendo's new system " then a show reel starts to play with close ups of the hardware and eventually zooming out and saying its new name slogan "Nintendo Zero - Where the new era begins"
after the video ends reggie walks to the table by his side and lifts the material to unveil the actual console.
The console is a sleek black console with red lining, around the size of a PS4 but curved on the top, he begins to explain the importance of unity, family and togetherness and how being social is important. he then reaches over and grabs the console but only a small part of it is in his hand coming apart from the console / terminal ( the hand held / home console merger reveal just happened )

he opens the Nintendo Zero handheld which looks similar to a 3ds but has analogue sticks both sides and a new design. he begins explaining that the hand held is as powerful as the Wii U and you can play digital wii u games on the hand held and home console. he then takes out a ds size cartridge and places it in the handheld, explaining that it is a 64gb cartridge and can hold huge games, then he take the same cartridge and places it in the Nintendo Zero home console. explaining you can play the same game on both systems, " and that is just the beginning" Reggie explains, all new Nintendo Zero consoles from now on will be able to play the same cartidges, are linked together by a nintendo account system like the competitors but you can play all digital games through all Nintendo Zero consoles.

he then drops the bomb that the home console is more powerful than the PS4 and all games made for the home console will simply downscale for the handheld.

He explains all the new features such as voice chat, a true account system, free transfer of your digital wii u and wii games and then drops another bomb that as well as all their wii u virtual console library you now have gamecube and dreamcast library of virtual console games.

next he picks up the nitnendo zero handheld and demos it being used as a nintendo zero controller, he also gets a second player on stage who brings a new smaller wii u gamepad, and another player who brings a new ZERO pro controller, then one more who brings a standard wii u gamepad all compatible with the home console.

after everyone is hyped and amazed by the system he goes onto the games appologising for the lack of wii u games in 2015 due to the development of brand new Nintendo Zero games and a video reel starts.
first we get the games we already have for wii u showing that they are now downloadable for the N-ZERO,
then our first big hitter is ZELDA U real name is revealed and is shown to be out on wii u that day and available for the N-ZERO on launch ( showing better visuals etc )
then a Mario galaxy 3 ( or a new title ) is revealed with unreal engine 4 type graphics. the same goes next with a new true metroid, F-Zero and a few more games we havent heard from in a while.

he then reveales games coming in 2017 including Splatoon 2, mario kart 9, mario party Zero , Smash Bros and more.

then it shows a ton of 3rd party support.

Now Reggie brings out a new device explaining it is an optional item which is augmented reality headset ( yes the N-ZERO is compatible with augmented reality gear ) explaining that this will allow you to play without a tv, make 3d worlds and is the future of gaming ( they will add their nintendo twist onto it )

finally he explains that there is a new N-Zero app where you can contue playing N-ZERO games in a mini game format on the go, eg for mario maker youcan make levels but not play them etc or you can log in and chat to people, go on new miiverse, and other new features.

he ends with saying the new Nintendo Zero will be available November this year!

Then Reggie reveals that it costs $799, and everyone's jaw drops, finally realizing the actual realities of what a hybrid console entails.

Not to mention the development costs for a machine like that.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

  • Revealed at E3
  • $200 Handheld that's about on par with 360/PS3, and keeps clamshell design. Both powerful & inexpensive enough to look good as a "games only" device. Will have second circle pad.

As for 1st party launch games:

  • Twilight Princess HD
  • Super Mario Maker port
  • Some other game to be used as more of a tech demo of what the system can do.

Japanese 3rd Party launch window games:

  • Samurai Warriors: Chronicles 4 & Ninja Gaiden Collection (also coming to Wii U) from Koei Tecmo.
  • Monster Hunter 5 from Capcom.
  • new SoulCalibur & a PS3 Tales port from Namco Bandai.
  • Bravely 3rd & Final Fantasy XII HD (also coming to Wii U) from SE.
  • Something Sonic related from Sega.

Western 3rd party launch games:

  • They won't support it directly, but the system will have Google Play connectivity, and a bunch of developers western & Japanese have promised to update select titles to be playable the NX controls. This will make the GTA games, Genesis Sonic games, Final Fantasy games on mobile (as well as Valiant Hearts and Telltale's games) all playable on day one. Any future mobile titles released with the "core" gamer in mind will also have an NX control option as well, from these developers.

For me, it'd be an E3 reveal (for the major hype factor), complete with a realistic looking Zelda game revealed in the same way as Twilight Princess was (Zelda U's NX version could work here too):

You'd then see a reveal for a brand new 3D Mario game mixing the best of the 3D World style and Mario 64/Sunshine style open world gameplay, a new 2D game with a completely new art style and music, as well as tons of new ideas and characters and enemies. Super Smash Bros 5 with its own intro trailer and multiple newcomers, Metroid Prime 4, F-Zero NX, another new Star Fox game and some sort of open world 3D Pokemon title exclusively for the system. It'd then be capped off with an announcement about Virtual Console games (with Gamecube, Wii and Wii U games being part of the service), a trailer reel of popular indie titles and a significant showing in regards to third party games made exclusively for the system.

And then the ultimate bombshell; the system is going to be released within the next week. Literally. Complete with said Zelda game, one Mario title, a new Wii Sports like experience and a bunch of other smaller games.

Unrealistic? Oh sure, but it'd certainly break the internet in two over all the hype.

First, as much as I would like to see it, Nintendo isn't changing a thing about the NSMB franchise. It sells insanely well, and changing it means risking those sales.

Also, sounds like Staturnday. I suppose it might work, but they need to have 3rd parties clued in, and have several ads ready to go.

An open-world, pretty-much-MMO Pokémon game to launch with the system.

They wouldn't be able to keep that thing on the shelves for years.

I can get behin what @RR529 said, minus the Play Store thing, unless google finds a way to better regulate Play Store content between now and releas (which they won't). I'd rather have Nintendo partner up with Nvidia to integrate the TegraZone into their handheld. You know, quality over quantity.

With Mario Maker no doubt giving us our fill of traditional 2D platforming forever, essentially, I'm hoping they take the opportunity to actually change up their officially made 2D games. I don't think throwing in a new power or two is gonna entice people forever. Not when we have ridiculous user made levels at our disposal. Unless things like curved surfaces are things people really care about.

And surprise hardware launches sound really exciting for fans, but they are an absolute nightmare for pretty much everyone else. Retailers, manufacturers, the company itself. That would just never happen. Not again.

You aren't wrong. But when the best selling game on Wii U is NSMBU, Nintendo is going to play it as safe as possible, at least until an NSMB game performs poorly.

Whatever the system is, I'd like to see a new Mario game that combines the best of open world Mario & "3D series" Mario.

It'd have a large explorable hub world castle (Bowser's Castle, this time around), and would have 8 rooms that would have 5-8 paintings each (of course, there would be other rooms & areas as well, with other hidden goodies).

8 rooms, to mirror the 8 worlds of traditional Mario, where each painting would represent a level in that "world". Other than that room's boss painting, all paintings in a room could be completed in any order (though you'd have to beat all paintings in a room before moving on to the next room).

The levels would be a mix. While they all would have you working towards a flagpole, half would be of the timed obstacle course variety (like 3D Land/World), and the other half would be untimed open world areas, where through a mix of platforming & puzzles, you'd work your way up to the flagpole. Mario himself would follow traditional rules, where instead of a health bar, you get small when hit, and poweups last until you're hit or obtain a new one (if a puzzle in an open world level requires a certain powerup, there'd be a place where it'd respawn nearby, if you lose it/don't have it).

@Jmaster, if there is any connectivity between NX & Google Play, I imagine it'd be a more proprietary version of it, where only the games with an NX control option would be available through it.

Meaning it'd have access to stuff like the Final Fantasy games & GTA games, but not most of the shovelware (who's developers either wouldn't have the means necessary to add the option, or would have no reason to do so).

Forgot to put that in my original post.

@RR529

That sounds more like it's combining the worst of the "Mario 3D" series with okay elements of the traditional 3D Mario games.

Linear level design is fine to a degree. Mario Galaxy 1 did a great job of merging linear levels with more open levels.

However, even if the level is more linear, there is inherently a greater focus on exploration than in a 2D, because there is more space (unless you make the levels an extremely narrow path where you can see everything a la Crash Bandicoot). This is why ideas designed for precision platforming in a 2D Mario game like the timer and the life system are fundamentally contrary to a 3D platforming design. The timer encourages the player to rush through the level, but if the player does that, they aren't taking advantage of the greater number of pathways and hidden areas 3D offers. The 2D Mario health system punishes the player for taking risks (like looking for hidden areas or alternate pathways), by robbing them of a powerup, rather than simply giving them a health bar.

I always liked the world approach the first 3 3D Mario games took where you could have more than one "world" open to you at a time. I could alternate between Bianca Hills and Ricoh Harbor, rather than having to finish one.

Here's what I would consider a "best of the 'Mario 3D' and traditional 3D"

Controls of 64/Sunshine/Galaxy
Life system of Galaxy games
Hub World filled with 6 main worlds each with 8 levels each, and 8 worlds with 2 levels each.
Like in Galaxy, some worlds would return you to the same place every time, while others give you a brand new type of level.
Like in Galaxy, some levels are open world while others are linear
Like in the "Mario 3D" games, there are single rooms and enemy encounters within the world
There is a mix of traditional 3D Mario power-ups that change the gameplay for a particular level (like Bee Mario), and "Mario 3D" style powerups that give the player a new set of tools to play the same level with.
Levels retain the collect the "green star" mechanic that the "Mario 3D" games have.

I'm digressing heavily from the topic, but you presented a novel idea and I wanted to give my thoughts.

@iKhan

1. Well, since there would be entire open world levels dedicated to exploration (and untimed), there wouldn't need to be any exploration in the obstacle course levels, meaning the timer would work there (this would also create an even bigger difference between the two types of levels).

2.As for the controls, while I prefer the traditional controls, it really doesn't matter to me much either way.

3. In terms of the health system, I just greatly prefer the traditional style. This is just something we'll have to disagree on, lol.

4. In terms of playing certain worlds in any order, that's why I said you could play the levels (other than the boss one) in a room/world in any order, to give that vibe to some degree.

On to extra details:

  • I'd want all levels/paintings in a room to follow the same theme (desert, grassland, ect.), though I'd be interested in seeing them come up with some more creative themes, or finding organic ways of incorporating ice, fire, or sky levels into other themes (I think this is why the level selection in the "3D series" games is so random. They don't want to group all the ice, fire, whatever levels behind the same difficulty scale). I like the variety, but would like it to be more organic. Maybe in the tropical "water" world, one level would be set in an active volcano, or have a level where Kamek's magic has frozen over all the water (maybe in the boss level).
  • I'd like them to incorporate Star Coins (or some other collectable that's in threes), though what they'd do I don't know (in the "3D" series & NSMB games, I don't like the fact that you have to collect a certain nunber to progress. I'd rather be able to move on just for beating the previous level, and finding a new purpose for the coins). Anyhow, in the obstacle course levels they'd be easily visible, but would require a risky move to collect, while in the exploration levels they'd be hidden in alternate routes/shortcuts to the flagpole. Each style would encourage replays in their own unique ways.
