Topic: Should Nintendo Stop Making Consoles?

I definitely don't think that Nintendo should stop making consoles. The Wii U may have been a bust hardware wise and 3rd party support wise, but hey, I can forgive a miss. Not because I love Nintendo, but because Nintendo is the only gaming company pursuing innovation and presenting new experiences every time. If you're creative, sometimes something will fail. That being said, the Wii U is far from being a 100% fail. It didn't live up to the hype or the promises, but it's still a very enjoyable console.

The Wii was revolutionary and became a hit console, just like the Nintendo DS. NES, SNES, N64 were all great consoles as well with amazing games I still play, so Nintendo definitely knows how to make good consoles. Let's forgive the mistake and support them for NX. I'm more than sure they will bring something new and refreshing to the table. Since MiiVerse they've been listening to the gamer community and I'm sure they picked up on the issue of having a powerful console and 3rd party support.

I for one am 100% behind Nintendo, they've made me happy many more times than they've let me down. Nobody is perfect.

This is an unorthodox question. But deep down, I've seen it's a pretty good topic.

Nintendo has said before that they would rather die than go 3rd party.

That would be foolish. All I want is for Nintendo to keep making console games, that is, deep, sit-down experiences. A practice that, I feel, has been a bit light on the Wii U.

I wouldn't mind if they made console games exclusively for Playstation or Xbox, outside of potential monopoly concerns. They could probably even hash out a deal to make games exclusive to one or the other platform in return for lower licensing fees there. So they could still make a great profit from being a third part dev, if that comes to it. Obviously, this doesn't have a chance of happening until the NX has come and gone.

Silly for you, but I think them becoming a third party dev would be a mistake as far as variety in games is concerned. Them having a console means they have to support it with a variety of games. Them making for others means they could basically just make Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and Smash Bros and not bother with anything else, being a far less interesting company.

Here's what people are missing. Exclusive games are generally an anti-consumer practice in today's day and age. So from a "games available standpoint", any of the big 3 going 3rd party would benefit the consumer.

So then the question you have to ask is "what benefit to I get from X company making a console". I'd argue that Nintendo has the strongest answer to that question: Unique gameplay due to unique hardware. Nintendo is able to consistently utilize features like the Wii's motion controls, the DS and 3DS's dual screens, the 3DS's 3D, and the Wii U's Gamepad because they sell a console and a unique controller together.

On the other hand, when you look to Microsoft and Sony, you don't really need both around to have the current experience available.

This. Thread should have stopped right here.

@foobarbaz: Then there are thousands of games you can enjoy on Sony and Microsoft's systems. But the people who like innovative controllers, we get completely screwed if Nintendo goes 3rd Party.

What innovation? Waving your arms around? I call that a gimmick not to mention Nintendo is no longer the only one that supports that. I know you like motion but face it, that was a fad that ended a long time ago when all the casual Wii owners moved onto smartphones for gaming. Do you mean using a touchpad that's ancient when compared to other tablets? That just makes Nintendo look like they are behind the times and can't design hardware right. Or do you call having to look down at your controller to view a map/inventory innovation? I sure don't. Even Nintendo admitted that the gamepad wasn't fully utilized. I'd bet that the Wii U would have sold a lot better if it came with a Pro Controller and was $50 - $100 cheaper.

For me, Nintendo is great because of its games and not the hardware.

Call it what ever you want. My point is that a lot of people still like it, and if Nintendo went third party, we would hardly (if at all) get any games that make use of these whatever-you-want-to-call-thems. With Nintendo making hardware you still get thousands upon thousands of great games that use a controller that hasn't changed in 15 years on Sony and Microsoft systems. So everyone gets something they want.

Just look at the opportunity cost of staying in the hardware business. If all they cared about was profit, they would have stopped making hardware after the Wii and DS and instead only focused on making games for Microsoft/Sony consoles and mobile devices. Yes, they want to make money but that's not the primary reason they're still in the hardware business. They're in it because they think that by pairing their software with their own hardware, they are creating a an experience that is better than what would be possible if they used someone else's hardware. I'm arguing that that is not true.

This is not all they care about. They also care about revenue. Cash flow. The power to invest. Making more than you spend is always good, but they'd rather be making $100 on $80 instead of $50 on $20. Any global company would.

The primary reason that they're in hardware is because it accounts for more than 50% of their total revenue.

Liquidate all of your assets. Your home, your car, all your possessions, everything. Convert it all into cash. Separate that cash into two piles of equal size. Burn one pile.

You are now 3rd party Nintendo.

Nintendo, please STOP making consoles after the release of Nintendo NX. Sega had stopped making consoles, Nintendo will also stop too. Nintendo would make Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby, etc. games on Playstation, XBOX consoles, etc. Nintendo would break from making consoles.

@herone-firestyle: I'll email this to Kishimma right away, I can't believe it was always that simple. 100% of the employees at Nintendo as well as their families are starving because Nintendo never make money on anything they are doing, and the latest financial report leaves little room for doubt. And here you are, the bright light, beacon of hope, ambassador of righteousness, and shining grace that will be remembered for eons as the man who saved hundreds of thousands of people's lives with your revolutionary and not selfish at all ideas. Together we will make a difference, together Nintendo shall be saved! Think of the children!

The less influence Nintendo has on the industry, the more the industry loses its soul. We need Nintendo to bring some much needed variety and creativity to this industry because most of everything else is very cookie cutter and boring. That goes for hardware AND software.

What a weird time to necro this thread. We learned today that Wii U hardware sales increased YoY because of Splatoon and Super Mario Maker. That is, increased over 2014, the year of Mario Kart 8 and Smash, the two biggest hitters the company had in its stable. Obviously, Nintendo still has the ability to sell their hardware with exclusive software.

I want Microsoft to stop making consoles, leaving only Nintendo and Sony as the major console players (I've never owned a Sony console). As far as I'm concerned, Microsoft has nothing of value to add to the "console race" as their consoles and library have always been comparative to that of Sony's. At least Nintendo experiments with bold concepts (however convoluted they may be) and make at least some effort in moving the industry forward.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

Yeah, Microsoft has always felt very "me too", they've contributed very little to the industry. I would be fine with them dropping out and leaving Nintendo and Sony.

@Bolt_Strike: I feel that way about Sony. Just give the Square RPGs to Nintendo consoles (Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, etc.) and then Sony's contribution to consoles is pretty much meaningless.
