@ShaneOh a lot of people who say what she said, don't particularly understand much at all.
Agreed, it would be as if I said that "the only way to have an intelligent conversation on physics is to be educated on LEGO collecting." Frankly, for saying something so.... stupid (to put it nicely), I'd expect brutal criticism.
@Waluigi: It was treading the line... Sigh, certain people just are like "These people she accused, I heard they don't agree with my political sensibilities. So I believe her." kind of bull is tiring.

@edhe, that's the thing — they aren't healthily debating. Time and again, myself and others have mentioned that the issue isn't about Rapp's moonlighting gig, her job performance, her social views, or the sidetracks into how people feel about Anita Sarkeesian or Zoe Quinn or any other female gaming figure. Time and again, we've said that the issue is that abuse and harassment is what led to Rapp even finding herself in the spotlight to begin with. In response to that, these GG'ers simply act insanely dismissive about harassment toward women, paint victims as devious gold diggers, and go off on tin-foil-hatted crusades about "the media" and how much they hate Anita Sarkessian or what have you.
Some of us have had intelligent discourse on the Alison Rapp issue. But GG'ers want to get into what GamerGate "really" is, and tell us about "ethics in journalism" (which is both hardly relevant to Rapp and a self parody at this point). I'm not here to debate about GamerGate; you're not going to have healthy debate on gender issues with a gender-oriented hate group.
@Sticker, I think that is awesome of you to say. It makes me smile when someone takes the time to research an issue and comes around to a new viewpoint.
@edhe, that's the thing — they aren't healthily debating.
Implying that the opposing side is above reproach. Neither side is firmly in the right. I've seen people on the GG side who have remained civil, and those on the anti-GG side who have been absolutely foul.
@shaneoh, in this thread? I haven't seen anybody get absolutely foul. I'm not implying that anyone is above reproach. I'm speaking about the debate in this thread, in which GG'ers and GG sympathizers have consistently done the things I mentioned (downplay abuse, demonize victims, and sidetrack into Feminist Frequency) rather than engage the core of the issue.
Time and again, we've said that the issue is that abuse and harassment is what led to Rapp even finding herself in the spotlight to begin with.
Like I said in an earlier post, the alleged harrasment she was receiving was cherrypicked and manipulated to seem greater than it actually was. And even with Anita Sarkeesian, who undoubtedly recieves many times more hate, how can you prove that it all comes from Gamergate? Ever heard of 4chan? 8chan? GNAA? (the latter, a notorious troll group)
Ultimately, the one thing people like you most opposed to gamergate exhibit is the complete oblivousness to the diversity of the community - truly they are as diverse as their anti-GG counterparts. Are you seriously trying to claim that the women who are part of the movement hate women?
Also, just so you know (If you had your suspicions, they're probably all but confirmed by now), I too support the gamergate cause, so if you're going to be ostracizing people, you'd better write my name down too. I often change my avatar, but I have no plans to change my username, so you can always be sure of who I am. I'll tell you one thing though - believe it or not, but I have absolutely no problem with women playing or making games.
Nethertheless, I'd agree - I'm not here to convert people to my way of thinking, although a downgrade from 'literally hitler' would be nice. But no matter what anyone says, GG is relevant in the discussion as long as gaming websites kneejerk and blame GG for stuff like this. And just like clockwork, that's exactly what they're doing.

Why does it matter if the harassment was cherrypicked or manipulated? Why do we have to prove it all came from Gamergate.
Regardless of it's volume or when it came from, harassment is not okay, at all. What frightening about a few of the posts here is some people are trying to diminish the accusations of the women because they're either media hungry or money hungry or some other reason.
That very well may be the case, but to diminish their claim of harassment (which is clearly evident) is wrong.

At this point you can't really point to GamerGate anymore and blame them. I don't disagree with the fact that these people identify as a part of GamerGate (just to be clear, I don't condone the actions against Rapp; that was a vile move), but I've also met people who identify as part of GamerGate for completely different reasons and who also do no approve of what happened with Rapp. The group is separated in many different sub-groups if you will. There are plenty of decent people, but there's also a big group that resorts to vile actions like these. The entire idea or group of GamerGate is just a mess at the moment.
I don't get this. The gamergate hashtag is strongly connected to misogyny, harassments and worse. Yet people don't blame people for identifying with them?
If someone wears a hakenkreuz it's fair to assume that they're racist, because the symbol represents exactly that. If someone identifies with gamergate, why in the world is it wrong to assume they're misogynists? If you're not a misogynists then why in the world would you identify yourself with such a group? Surely there are other groups which represents your views or ideas without crossing the line? And if not then start your own, with good ethics as a foundation. It saddens me that this is something that needs to be said on these forums, because the debates, while sometimes heated, are usually more upbeat and polite.
@AlliMeadow: "If someone wears a hakenkreuz it's fair to assume that they're racist, because the symbol represents exactly that"
Godwins Law at its finest. Someone will ALWAYS draw a comparison to Nazis, always
I mean, you could flip your comparison around:
"Modern, progressive left feminism is strongly connected to misandry, harassments and worse. Yet people don't blame people for identifying with them?"
Its the same schtick really. Black and white mentality at its best and you people wonder why such movements exist in the first place ?
"Oh, they speak up against something ? Must be GamerGate, now we know who to ignore"
This, my friend, is the reason this cuss has been going on for years. Guilt by assumption, thats the stuff that makes people who have been upset outright angry.
And you can start whatever you want, just look at TorrentialDwonpour. It had nothing to do with gamergate....until certain people said so, now it has.
It wasnt even a revolt, it was an awareness campaign to show how drastically a port was altered, since the media sugarcoated the whole thing.
Now "its gamergate hatespeach and wrongthink".
GamerGate has become the boogeyman to blame for all the worlds problems, since it is such an easy way to completely kill off a discussion. How ? Easy, you can read it a couple of posts back: "You sound like GamerGame, im going to ignore you". And poof, one persons opinion vanished.
Think of the movement what you will, i too think its a cesspool of idiocy, but the other side of the coin is equally mental. There is no good and evil, there is only a bunch of idiots flinging dung around in an endless cycle of "lalala not listening, lalala"
Blaming GamerGate has become the internets version of diplomatic immunity.
Critique ? Of, you must be GamerGate blocked
Im so done with this childish nonsense. I mean, look at it, now its down to witchhunting among ourselves because "gasp, some of them might be GamerGate !" although no one was advocating stuff like that.
