He might not be as good of a friend as you think he is.

I told him, I heard the game is bad, but that's ok because I have no standards for the series.
I've been through the first half-hour. Pretty game, but I do hope the combat does get a bit better over the game. I feel like all I have to do is press A alot, and I win.

Final Fantasy used to be the kings of the JRPG genre.... its not anymore.
I'll just say this.....
A great series with tons of potential.... it just needs better writers.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

If you want, you can just put it on auto-battle. Then all you have to do is run down hallways and watch cutscenes. No muss, no fuss.

For about 40-50 hours.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

It kinda does by Chapter 11, and most of the boss battles are more interesting (as it true for every RPG), but I never felt the combat was ever more than...flashy. It's pretty and there's a lot going on, but once you find some tactics that work, you wind up doing the same stuff over and over again. Actually...that's a problem with a lot of RPGs, but Final Fantasy especially. They really need to make battles more dynamic.

Also, was I the only one who found autobattle to be useless? I specifically remember the auto-battle doing more harm than good...and I was playing with my bro, who very much would've liked to auto-battle his way through the game...

That's basically my issue with FFVII right now. The battles are flashy but they don't require you to actually... do anything. You just press buttons and shiny things happen and then you win.

Also @Blast I always felt that the cheesy melodramatic stories were what made the series good. Or at least, they've become so synonymous with Final Fantasy that I can't imagine a main series title without it haha

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

I never got introduced to the series until the GBA remake of Dawn of Souls, but I have been a fan ever since. Right now I'm playing VI again on iOS and I'm loving every bit of it.
Note: I have only played from I to IX and I have never finished V, VIII or IX.

Best/Worst game? - hard to choose but I'd have to say my favorites are II, IV and VI in nomparticular order. My least favorite so far? Probably VIII, but I haven't played much of that one.

Best/Worst Character? Sabin and Tidus. I have never played X but I have heard him laughing.

Best/Worst Summon - I love using Sylph whenever available. For worst, dunno, maybe that one that turns enemies into items but never works.

High Point of Series - the SNES.

Low Point of Series - Now

What one aspect of the series do you love the most? - the characters and universes.

Next game you would love to see in "HD"? II !

People say FF VII is the "best game ever". Do you agree? Eh. It was good, but it is hard to look at.

Best Memory - Playing through the first two games for the first time. Over and over and over.

Worst Memory - When I lost my copy of IV for GBA.

Best/Worst Enemy Encounter - for worst: every encounter in FFIII.

If there was something you could plant from the older games into the newer - what would it be? Probably the fact that they relied less on fancy graphics and more on likeable, funny characters.

What is the longest time logged & what game was it? Probably the combined time I spent playing II across all the versions of it I own.

Best Game (out of those I've played): FFVII
Worst Final Fantasy Game (until it picks up): FFVIII
Best Character (from the games I've played): Cloud
Worst Character (from the games I've played): Selphie
Best Summon (of those I've gotten): Quadra-Bahamut ZERO (a.k.a Instant Death)
Worst Summon (of those I have): ChocoMOG
High Point of the Series: SNES/PS1 Era
Low Point: Since FF13
Favorite Aspect: The Music
Next Game in HD: FFVIII (If it gets more than just HD.)
FFVII the Best Game Ever: No, but it's still a fun ride.
Best Memory: Beating the entirety of the fight with Sepheroth on my first try (Quadra-Bahamut ZERO was the main reason I managed.)
Worst Memory: Aimlessly wandering trough a location in FFVIII because the game gives you no indication of what to do. (Square must have made a killing off of the tip line for that game.)
Best Enemy Encounter: Large Spider Robot in FFVIII
Worst Enemy Encounter: The ones where you have to spam Draw in FFVIII.
What should be brought from the old games: The idea that the game is an RPG.
Longest Time and Log Time: 80+ hours of FFVII, although I just let the game run sometimes.

Owned Entries (In order):

  • Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
  • Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls
  • Final Fantasy VII

@Moorpheel - Hahaha, the Laugh...is probably Tidus's best scene. You haven't suffered his stupidity through the entire game, heard is stupid quotes nearly every battle (What's that Tidus? Don't think? Yes, because a turn-based JRPG battle should be completely devoid of any thought. Thank you for your grand wisdom), or sat through his blatant odepus complex, which the game keeps trying to play up as actual drama and not just weirdness. I have never hated a character more in my life.

For serious. I know that the FF fanbase is very divided in general, but I don't know how anyone can claim that Vanille or Cloud or whoever else is the worst character ever when Tidus is still a thing. What an unholy abomination.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

I'm surprised like 3 people mentioned Final Fantasy XII... It was my 3rd FF game (I think) and despite some questionable decisions in the Battle System department, overall, I thought it was a very good and enjoyable game. The story was nice, the characters were at worst bearable, with almost everyone backed up by some pretty snazzy VAs.

I dunno, I just can't get back into FF as much as I once did anymore, mainly because FF was always, to me at least, the "vanilla" RPG: a good introduction/a good way to introduce someone to RPGs, but there's just so much better out there now...

Best game: Final Fantasy VII
Worst game: Final Fantasy XIII
Best character: Auron (X), even if he can't suplex a train.
Worst character: [Insert randomly-picked non-Sazh XIII character here]
High point of the series: 1997, also not coincidentally one of the highest points of gaming in general.
Low point of the series: December 17, 2009 - Present
Favorite aspect of the (at least, classic) series: Everything that made Squaresoft so legendary rolled into one perfect series of 10 games.
Game I'd like to see in HD: Honestly, I don't really see the need for any, but if I had to pick I'd say IX.
Is Final Fantasy VII the best game ever?: Very nearly, but Chrono Trigger just tops it IMO. I still think the game is basically everything it's said to be, though.
Best memory: My first time going through the final showdown of Final Fantasy VII
Worst memory: The beginning and subsequent milking for all it was worth of the Lightning Saga. With Final Fantasy in the state it's in though, it's hard to pick.
Best/worst encounter: Final boss of VII, so memorable! Couldn't decide on a worst one, but if I had to take a guess it's probably from the Lightning saga
If there was something you could plant from the older games into the newer - what would it be?: Everything
What is the longest time logged & what game was it?: I'm pretty sure one of my save files on Final Fantasy VII is over 90 hours.

Best game: Either FFV and FFVI. I just can't decide. :/
Worst game: Any game after FFXII.
Best character: Cid in any FF game. He was just a funny, grumpy, wise old guy. The one in FFIV was the best. Or maybe Zidane. Why? Dat tail.
Worst character: I dunno, Lightening maybe?
Best summon: Bahamut, especially in FFV. Or maybe Phoenix in FFV. A very useful summon attack. It hits the enemy and restores one of your teammates life.
Worst summon: Remora. Wasn't very useful.
High point of the series: The NES era till the PS2 era.
Low point of the series: FFXIII.
Favorite aspect: The deep story and the music.
Next game in HD: FFVII
FFVII is the best in the series: That's what everyone says. It was good, but it didn't have what the other previous entries had.
Best memories: The last dungoen in FFV. It was a mixture of the visited places in the game until you reach the desired place, the Interdimensional Rift. Or in FFVI when choosing Locke and trying to sneak in South Figaro and steeling the empire solidiers' clothes. Or the Celes island event in FFVI (I don't want to spoil anything).
Worst memory: Training endlessly in FFV to gain abiltity points and master classes. It took forever. Also when I accidently hit my teammates with the Bahamut summon attack. I derped.
Best enemy encounter: Shinryu in FFV and Ultimate Weapon in FFVII.
Worst enemy encounter: Omniscient in FFV. Beating it needed a lot of tactics and skills. It was a challenge, especially that you only have two characters in your team.
What should be brought from the old games: What @SomeBitTripFan said.
Longest time and log time: 60+ in FFV.
Owned games:

  • Final Fantasy I & II (GBA)
  • Final Fantasy IV (Wii Virtual Console)
  • Final Fantasy V (iOS)
  • Final Fantasy VI (Wii Virtual Console)
  • Final Fantasy X (PS2)
  • Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
  • Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)
  • Theatrhythm Final Fantasy (3DS)

My favourite Final Fantasy is X, which is also my favourite game ever. I love the story, setting, battle system, sphere grid, music and beautiful graphics. I've enjoyed every Final Fantasy I've played (which is all the single player mainline entries apart from V, which I look forward to playing soon). That said, my least favourite is easily III on the DS. It's just never really clicked with me.

I love the series for many of the same reasons I love the RPG genre as a whole, but if there is one thing about Final Fantasy specifically, it is how chameleon-like it is. Each main instalment is different to the last and it makes every game feel unique within the series, with new things to appreciate and enjoy. The music is also fantastic.

Favourite character - there are lots to choose from but I reckon Balthier from XII is a good candidate. I also really like Celes from VI. I feel like it is more her game than Terra's.

The best summon is Anima from X. Utterly terrifying but extremely powerful. Her overdrive crushes all.

Longest spent playing - around 150 hours on Final Fantasy XII. That game is humongous. It's also marvelous and needs a HD remaster. The PS1 games don't because I can happily play them on my PSP or Vita without my eyeballs being scarred. I think FFVII would lose much of its charm if it was remade.

Best Memory: My friend and I playing multiplayer though FF 9 we had a fight and he said my healers were useless so I refused to heal him and then he kept talking crap so I used mini, dark and poison on him and his characters died and my healers weren't strong enough to take on the enemy LOL we game overed.
Worst Memory: Playing though FF 10-2

I know for a fact that nostalgia plays a large part in my love for my favorite (FFX, which was the first entry I played, at 12 or 13), I have no need to hide that.

I remember reading an article on some RPG centric website, stating that JRPGs are kinda like the video game world's Young Adult Novels (you know, like Harry Potter & the like). They both generally center around the same underlying themes which generally resonate best with you when you're a teen, and thus you get a nostalgic connection with them (on a level you don't with other games/books) that cements the first two or three you experience as the pinnacle of their genre, because newer ones (and older ones) will never resonate with you as well as the first few.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

unrandomsam

The best one for me is VI (Probably was the right time in my life when it was released but the themes it tackled were more complicated than any since). I wish it was not censored the version I played though.

The only ones I ever really liked were IV and VI (SNES III cost £80 to import). Didn't mind the DS version of III but it didn't do the same for me.

(Funny thing is I played IV about 15 years later than VI and still liked it about as much - didn't like the After Years though).

I didn't like VII or VIII which I played not long after VI.

I think early JRPG's were more like a book whereas the modern ones are like a really bad animated film. (Doesn't engage my imagination at all).

I like all the Dragon Quest's I have played. (IV V VI VIII IX) by comparison.

The first JRPG I played was the Master System version of Phantasy Star and I got almost to the end but I have no desire whatsoever to replay it.

(Which I played about 6 months after I tried to play Ultima IV and allthough I did lots of stuff and got all the characters / reagents - I never got a single one of the stones).

The last main console one I really really liked was Skies of Arcadia. (In terms of when it was first made not when I played it).

The cutscene heavy modern ones just make me switch off completely.
