Topic: Push Square's Best Nintendo Game of all Time!

Posts 1 to 20 of 21

Tasuki

First of, I hope posting this is ok, I figure that being sister sites it would be but if it isn't let me know and I will delete this thread.

Anyway just wanted to let everyone here who doesn't visit Pushsquare often that over there we are running a community poll of the best Nintendo game of all time!! We also like to invite users from NL to participate in the poll cause who better knows Nintendo then the community here.

It's a fun event put on by one of our community members and in the past he has ran similar polls such as best PS game of all time, best GOTY etc. I also figured this might be a nice thing to bring the two communities together.

If you'd like to participate just head over to Pushsquare (your login info is the same there as here) and post away. Hope to see some of you there.

I'm surprised Soul Caliber 2 is on there, also no Yoshi's Island and a lack of Mario Kart is also surprising but with so many titles they must have cancelled each other out.

No Xenoblade Chronicles and no Super Mario World?

I reject these opinions.

The presence of Awakening and the heavy Zelda slant sours the list for me personally.

Mario, Mario, Zelda, Zelda, Mario, Zelda, Mario, Zelda, Mario... bleh

I think this list should only include at most 2 titles per franchise (top and runner-up), but only one spot per franchise.
ex:
1. Super Mario Bros 3 NES (top): no. of votes/ Super Mario Galaxy Wii (runner-up): no. of votes
2. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time N64 (top): no. of votes/ Wind Waker GC (runner-up): no. of votes
3. blah blah blah (top): no. of votes/ blah blah blah (runner-up): no. of votes

This would help bring more games from different franchises into the mix without getting dominated by two of the most popular Nintendo IPs. While this will ignore the other titles within one franchise with large number of votes, I think it's for the best otherwise this list might as well be called The Best The Legend of Zelda/ Mario Games of All Time

@Frosty_09 It's the best Nintendo game of all time, and if most Mario or Zelda games are better than their other franchises, they have every right to be on that list in my opinion. Never understood the reason to limit the results to one game per franchise. Might as well have a ''Best game of every franchise'' poll if you want to know what you're suggesting!

Frosty_09

@Octane shrugs I guess I shouldn't take this list too seriously (come back to this after reading everything, lol), but yes I do want a "Best game of every franchise" poll which to me sounds a heck of a lot better than the final list. I have no doubt that Mario and Zelda have the greatest titles in their respective franchise but just looking at this list makes the results seem heavily biased and favor more towards Mario and Zelda titles, which occupy nearly half of the entries. To me this list looks boring and the results look pretty obvious that I could've just gone to Metacritic and copy and pasted them here and say "yeah thanks for stating the obvious by listing games that are already universally acclaimed". You could say that's the point of this list, but I think that it is a problem and rather it's what makes this list so "closed off" in its own little world. It's not open, there's not much variety (genre-wise especially I won't say that every Mario and Zelda titles are exact carbon copies despite being quite similar to each other from their core mechanics), it's like this list have a prerequisite that certain games MUST be on the list no matter what because it's so widely accepted to be the best while ignoring other games from different franchises that could arguably be better than some of those games on the list. If anything the list that this poll started on is a lot better than what we ended up with because ironically the amount of variety makes the initial list more widely accepted than the final list of universally acclaimed games limited to a small number of franchises. It's biased and there's really nothing special about this list it's just the same as many others you would normally see in this vast web.

Now this looks to be cherry picking on just the Mario and Zelda titles so I'll move onto the others. Pokémon Gold/Silver GBC? Why not Pokémon Crystal GBC or even the remakes HeartGold/ SoulSilver NDS that arguably has more content than its ancestors, is nostalgia at work here? Black and White made the gameplay flow much faster than the snail-paced battles in 4th Gen, and actually made an interesting story while also contributing to over 150 new Pokemons (whether you like them or not is up to you). Spin-offs should also be considered with the likes of Pokémon Conquest with its more strategic based gameplay, and the RPG dungeon crawler from the Mystery Dungeon series especially Explorers of Sky. Chrono Trigger SNES? Awesome game, but what about the DS port? Why not throw Dragon Quest games into the mix? Radiant Historia is a great alternative by Atlus. Fire Emblem Awakening 3DS? While it did save the franchise and is "universally acclaimed" by critics, I feel as though the people who voted (or most of the voters) had never played any other Fire Emblem titles other than the ones on the 3DS, which isn't such a great idea when trying to vote for the best Nintendo games of all time. Why not vote for ones from SNES? GBA? GC? which are arguably better than Awakening in many ways. Hell put Fates - Conquest instead for its vastly improved gameplay despite its laughably horrid story. Even the Advance Wars series are better choices than Fire Emblem Awakening, with exception to the first Advance Wars. I would vote for either Advance Wars 2 - Black Hole Rising or Advance Wars - Days of Ruin. Or how about some classic strategy games with the likes of Front Mission or Tactics Ogre/ Ogre Battle? Conker's Bad Fur Day N64? Never played it my alternatives would probably be MadWorld, Bayonetta, or No More Heroes from the looks of it. Super Metroid SNES? Another universally praised classic game. I would love to see Zero Mission GBA and Fusion GBA into the list as well, although I can see Super Metroid beating the other two by margins so I guess I'm fine with it. I think Metroid Prime Hunters should at least get a honorable mention for its incredible fast paced multiplayer, very hectic. Final Fantasy 6 SNES? A great game, for its time. It definitely has the markings of a classic and does a lot of things right although it definitely needs a makeover and some improvements in fleshing out its cast a bit more and the pacing of its second half and the top down perspective isn't really that great to navigate at some parts, and the "3D" effects while admirable did not age very well. I love how they fleshed out the character in Final Fantasy IV in the NDS remake alongside with some other improvements from the original. Why not include the overlooked Final Fantasy V SNES/GBA? Or heck even Final Fantasy III NDS? They're also great gems in the old-school aspect of the Final Fantasy franchise. I think The World Ends With You should get a mentioned as well, a unique dual screen combat system that makes full use of the DS hardware accompanied with catchy J-Pop music, easily one of the better gameplay I had experienced. Goldeneye 64 another great game for its time. It fun alright but it didn't age very well with certain aspects, at least there's an improved makeover for this game which makes it quite the experience. Star Fox 64 3D 3DS or Sin and Punishment N64/ Star Successor Wii are also great alternatives for more shooter-oriented titles. Other alternatives I would like to see are TimeSplitters, Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes, and Kid Icarus Uprising Although it's not an exact alternative, Super Smash Bros. Wii U? Sure it's Smash I really don't care whichever one wins. I might take heat for this, but I have never played a Soul Calibur game so I can't say much about it, moving on. Donkey Kong Country SNES graphics were considered to be awe-inspiring for its time but I don't think it has aged very well, but I do think that its platform gameplay is quite solid and challenging at times. It would be nice to see some mentions on the Country Returns and Tropical Freeze too, they're easily some of the best platformers to date and would get my vote over the SNES title. Metroid Prime GC? A great 3D Metroid adventure, I love the atmosphere and loved exploring for every hidden secrets while dodging and maneuvering foes to get to their weak spots, although I personally would vote for Echoes for its darker tone and challenging difficulty. Metroid Prime Trilogy would probably be a better choice as well for its updated visuals and the motion control scheme provides some great precision aiming. Why not include a title from the Resident Evil franchise for a survival horror genre that isn't all about shooting especially the popular fourth title, or even Resident Evil 0, the remake of the first Resident Evil, Code Veronica, and Resident Evil Revelations 3DS? Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2? Geez just pick one of them and leave the other one out for some reason this just irks me a lot, probably because of how similar they are despite the minor changes between the two. The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker GC? Why not the HD remaster on the Wii U that takes advantage of the artstyle to its fullest potential that shows some beautiful vibrant visuals compared to GameCube? Especially with the number of improvements added to make a smoother gameplay experience to make things less tedious? I think Okami should also be part of this list too for its gorgeous visuals and its mythical adventure in my opinion rivals that of The Legend of Zelda. I also believe Link's Awakening DX should also be mentioned in this list, it's quite amazing to see how well it stands in the test of time (minor issues aside) for a GBC title. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time N64? Why not the 3DS remake? While it still retains some of the sharp edges at least Grezzo did a great job updating the visuals and overall it's currently in my opinion the best version to play Ocarina of Time adding in the Master Quest, hints to help newcomers, some nice 3D effects, and the gyroscope is really helpful for aiming as well. Personally I would take Majora's Mask 3D over Ocarina of Time for its bizarre, darker premise and how it uses its time mechanics. Never played Twilight Princess although it looks like it suit my tastes can't say much about it other than to say that I'll probably pick up a copy sooner or later, nor have I played Super Mario Sunshine but I am rather curious to play it. I probably will like them but it still doesn't justify the idea that a list such as this should be limited to these franchises. Super Mario Bros. 3? I don't even know what to say, it's a great platformer and it's certainly an overall improvement from its predecessor, I guess I just like Super Mario World better since I played that one before Super Mario Bros. 3. What could make this list even more interesting would be to include different genres from the same franchise. Like Super Mario RPG, Mario and Luigi, Paper Mario, Mario Kart, Super Mario Strikers, etc. Instead were just stuck with variants of 2D and 3D Mario platform adventures, when those games are arguably just as great if not better. Where are the racing games like F-Zero? Where are the likes of Earthbound? Or even its sequel Mother 3? There's a going for those games with their charming unique premise and hilarious dialogue. There's just so many things missing and wrong from this list that I just simply cannot 100% fully agree that this list.

If you look at my example, I wanted to include at most 2 titles per franchise (the top game of the franchise and its runner-up) not "to limit the results to one game per franchise", but I guess that two can be as bad as one eh?

@Frosty_09 I skimmed through your post, didn't read all of it, just wanted to say that first!

I think the answer is rather simple. The most people played a certain game, the more likely people are going to vote for it. Remember, the active voters are also a relatively small group on PushSquare. Maybe 50 people at most. Anyway, it explains why Mario and Zelda are so high, I think that a similar poll on NLife would've ended up like that too. I remember the Best PS4 game of 2016. I knew that Uncharted 4 was going to win anyway (didn't mind that at all by the way). It's a great game and it sold really well. Naturally, more people are going to vote for it. I personally think that Tropical Freeze is one of the finest games made by Nintendo, and definitely a game that should be in the top 20. But we're talking about a Wii U game and we're polling on a PlayStation site. Not a lot of people own a Wii U (heck, even a decent chunk of people on NLife don't own a Wii U), so it was expected that it wouldn't get a lot of votes, because a lot of people are unfamiliar with the game, or just haven't played it. I've accepted that an ''objective'' poll or something close to that is just impossible. In the end, I can only vote for the games I've played.

To answer some of your questions. I prefer Gold/Silver over Crystal, and I prefer them even over HGSS. Nostalgia is part of that answer, but I can also appreciate the simplicity in those games. Plus, it's always a moral dilemma; Vote for the original game or vote for a remake? You can argue that the remake is the definitive version, but you can also argue that a remake doesn't add much originality and that the credit deserves to go to the original game instead.

I also think that HD remasters like Wind Waker HD were counted along with the original games as the same entry, but I'm not sure on that. I even argued that it wouldn't be fair to vote for the Prime Trilogy, as they're essentially three games in one, so you can blame me for that! I personally wouldn't count the trilogy as a ''game'', but rather a collection of games. Does it deserve a spot on the Best Game of All Time list? In my opinion; No.

I agree and disagree with some of the other examples. Would be great to see Okami get mentioned for example, or Super Mario World (better than SMB3 in my opinion). Still, you have to remember that we could only enter five games during the first round. Okami isn't in my top 5 Nintendo games of all time, so I didn't vote for it. Nobody did. Doesn't mean it doesn't deserve a spot in the top 20, or maybe top 50. Anyway, don't take it too seriously. We're just having some fun.

Frosty_09

@Octane Don't worry about it I just wanted to get my kicks out of tearing this list apart, because I have a different outlook on what makes a great list of Nintendo games. I am fully aware that this list comes from PushSquare, nevertheless it still irks me to see so many Nintendo titles not making the cut. On the flip-side however, if I were to list off my favorite PlayStation titles then I probably would get the same criticism so shrugs fair enough. None of the games that I previously mentioned are meant to be the only Nintendo games that everybody should accept rather just recommendations that I believe should at least get a mention. I have a different outlook on remasters and remakes too, I do understand that not every redos will always be considered the definitive version, however if it were improve upon (the phrase 'improve upon' is too vague and broad but I don't want to write another essay) the original then I believe that it does replace the original, albiet not entirely, and should be considered a standalone title of its own. Regarding collections, I only look at each game of the collection individually for a fair comparison. For example: Metroid Prime Trilogy's Metroid Prime Wii vs Metroid Prime GC, Metroid Prime Trilogy's Metroid Prime Echoes Wii vs Metroid Prime Echoes GC. It's not entirely a bad list, there are some legitimately great Nintendo titles mentioned here, rather it's a limited one that is only constrained to the most popular and nostalgic-based.
